Hello, friends! Today I’m sharing some of my Favorite Lap Quilts for Beginners. I recently received an email from a beginner quilter asking for this exact information–and of course, I thought it would make a terrific post idea. Keep reading for my six favorite easy lap quilts along with some other resources for beginner quilters.

Favorite Lap Quilts for Beginners
Cottage Charm Quilt
Cottage Charm is one of those quilts that looks great in everything. I’ve now made it three times and recently updated the pattern to include a small lap quilt. The lap quilt finishes at 42 ½″ x 53″ (add a border to make it just a bit bigger). There is also a 75 ½″ x 75 ½″ version included in the pattern.
Gum Drops Quilt
My Gum Drops Lap Quilt is an early design that I created with some of my favorite scraps several years ago and published in an American Patchwork & Quilting calendar. It finishes at 45 ½″ x 59″ and could also easily be made larger with the addition of an outer border.
County Fair Quilt
There are actually three different size options included in the County Fair Quilt pattern. Both the 57 ½″ x 69 ½″ and the 45 ½″ x 57 ½″ sizes are good for a lap quilt. And there is also a table runner version included!
Fresh Picked
My Fresh Picked quilt finishes at 46 ½″ x 59″ and is shown in our Balboa collection from 2020. This is another quilt that is gorgeous in any mix of fabrics and also perfect for scraps. The pattern is written for fat eighths, but fat quarters also work well.
Bucket List Quilt
My Bucket List quilt is a fast and fun star quilt with an alternating block that goes together extra quickly. The lap quilt finishes at 50″ x 58″ and is fat eighth or scrap fabric friendly.
The mini quilt finishes at 25″ x 25″ and is charm pack or scrap fabric friendly. The mini quilt is perfect for your wall or as a table topper. You could also leave the outer border off and use it as a pillow front.
Laguna Stars Quilt
And last but definitely not least, I present the Laguna Stars Lap Quilt. Laguna Stars finishes at 45″ x 54 ½″ and is a perfect beginner project. This quilt works with a Layer Cake or fat eighths, fat quarters, or scraps!
