How to Make a Scrap Quilt
If you’ve never made a scrap quilt before, don’t worry–a scrap quilt is one of the easiest and most enjoyable quilting projects you can make. Here are a few ideas along with a post that shares even more details for each of these steps:
- Choose a palette or theme (think colors, holidays, designer groups)
- Gather fabrics for your chosen style
- Choose a pattern (simple squares and strips are perfect for your first scrap quilt–but any pattern can be made with scraps)
- Set a realistic goal
- Start sewing and have fun
80/20 Scrap Quilts
One easy way to start a scrap quilt project is to use 80% of fabrics from one collection and then add in other pieces from other designers and collections. This method ensures that you don’t have to start from “scratch” when picking fabrics and have a good basis for beginning. Using this method you also get some good practice adding in fabrics that might not be considered “matching.” Making an 80/20 scrap quilt is a terrific way to start your first scrap project if you are nervous about liking the outcome.

Thank you SO much for this post. Yesterday, I was staring at my overflowing scrap bin wondering how to cut up the odd-shaped pieces. Sherri to the rescue! The 8-inch log cabin is going to the top of my list as I have that ruler but actually forgot about it. Your timing was absolutely perfect.

I have found that scrappy quilts are my favorite to make. I like to use coordinating fabrics, but pulling random colors for the blocks is fun and it’s pretty forgiving when seams do not line up exactly.
I’m using Sherri & Chelsi fabrics from multiple lines to make the BOM. I have some fat quarters, a purchased scrap bag and some yardage I got during a Fat Quarter Shop Sale.
