Patchwork Quilt Along

Hello! Today is the first day of the Fat Quarter Shop Patchwork Quilt Along! This quilt along is the Fat Quarter Shop’s annual charity fundraiser and will benefit the Make a Wish foundation this year (Fat Quarter Shop and Moda fabrics will match up to $20,000 of donations raised). Patterns are available for free download and will be available each month on the fifteenth; in addition to the free patterns, you can watch the video tutorials for step by step instructions for piecing each block.

Basics collection–kits and backing sets are available from Fat Quarter Shop if you are interested in using these same fabrics (find them here).  

Of course you are also welcome to sew with your own  choice of fabrics. I went back and forth while trying to decide which fabrics to use…there are so many types of fabrics I thought would be fun to see pieced into these traditional blocks. I finally settled on…

making a scrappy red and blue version with scrappy backgrounds using a variety of different fabrics by Minick & Simpson located in my stash and scrap bins. Now that I’ve pieced the first six blocks, I’m super happy with my choice because it will lend itself well to the patterns. 

What’s even better is that since we will be making six blocks each month using different fabrics, chain piecing can be used to speed things up. I was surprised at how quickly the blocks went together! I’m going to use one background each month as well to make things a little easier, and since the blocks will be spread throughout the quilt my different background fabrics will end up evenly dispersed throughout the quilt as well!
