Hello! So…with the holidays behind us what are you sewing now? Do you do a lot of Valentine’s Day sewing? I typically don’t do a lot of sewing for Valentine’s…but last year I started a pillow based on this Christmas pillow…and then didn’t quite get it finished in time…so off it went into the WIP drawer.
So when heart quilts recently started showing up on blogs and in my Instagram
feed, I remembered I had something that was almost finished. Basically, all I needed to do was to make the pillow back and bind it. It took less than an hour, and it was done!
I like using zippers for my pillow covers…it just gives them a more professional look, especially using the zipper flap method.
I’ve been using this Sew Mama Sew tutorial for my pillow backs for several years now, and I’m always happy with the results.
The fabrics I used are from the First Crush collection by Sweetwater for Moda Fabrics (it’s about a year old, I believe). I also used the grey Moda Crossweave fabric for the background of the embroidery on the front and the black Crossweave for my pillow back.
I’ve always loved the saying by Mother Teresa, “Do small things with great love,” and it seemed like the perfect sentiment for this little pillow.
So I have a Valentine’s finish for this year. There are, however, two problems this caused: first…I want to have this saying out all year, so now I need to make a non-seasonal pillow or wall-hanging that will include this embroidered phrase, and second…I think I do want to make a heart quilt…in fact, I started experimenting…be back soon with my heart quilt ideas…
Thanks so much for stopping by!

My valentine sewing was pretty sparse too, till I made a Wall hanging for our Foyer last year. Now I'm looking at some heart quilt patterns. Your pillow with that lovely zipper closure and beautiful saying is very special. It would be hard for me to tuck away after Valentines is over.

Love the sentiment and pillow!

Your pillow is beautiful. Thanks for the inspiration and the link for finishing the pillow back. That is a perfect solution to hiding a zipper with a little class.

That's Mother Theresa's quote. It speaks to my heart also. Beautiful finish!

I love your cute little pillow and happen to have some First Crush in my stash and think I should use them this year.
I tested a pattern for Nadra (@ellisandhiggs) and here Tiny Heart Mini is so cute I'm really tempted to make a bigger version but perhaps not in Valentine's fabric so I can keep it out all year long.

I love this pillow and style and would like to make one. I made a beautiful pillow for a Christmas gift with this same saying. (an embroidery machine design). It fit the person i gave it to. Like you, I would like to make one for year round too-for myself this time.

Thank you for the inspiration. What a thoughtful gift it will mske! I haven't put a zipper in anything since 7th grade Home Ec class over 50 years ago but I'm on my way now to watch the tutorial you suggested. My new retirement is looking up!

Where do you get the writing quotes that you embroider, and how do you out them on the material? Darling pillow.

Really like the pillow. I just made 2 of these type of pillows, one of which has a zipper as well. I found the pillow on "the nana company" blogspot. Very fun to make & your pillow looks very nice
