Hello friends! Today I’m sharing something old and something new! Several years ago, I shared a Half Square Triangle Scrappy Quilt for my 2019 block of the month program. I ended up making two versions of the quilt that year and have absolutely loved both of those quilts! Well, my half-square triangle bins are now overflowing and so I’m going to make a new quilt using the same blocks. Keep reading for details on my plan and for information on the blocks and quilt options.

Half Square Triangle Scrappy Quilt Details
I’ve recently updated the 2019 Block of the Month quilt into a new PDF file with a new booklet printed pattern option as well. The pattern gives details for two different quilt options using the 25 different block designs–a straight set quilt using 3″ finished half-square triangles finishing at 76 ½″ x 76 ½″ and an on-point quilt using 2″ finished half-square triangles finishing at 60 ½″ x 60 ½″.
Of course, the block designs will work for any size HST you want to make–you could even make a darling mini quilt using 1″ finished units–there are lots of possibilities with these designs. I’ll be sharing my blocks each week for the next 12 weeks (scroll to find the free download for the block layouts), so you can easily sew along without purchasing the pattern. However, the new pattern with all of the finishing details is on sale now with PDF files available for download and the paper versions shipping in about a week.
The Scrappy Half-Square Triangle Quilt Video
We filmed a video the other day, too, so you can see my original straight-set quilt up close. Watch the video above or head to our YouTube channel where you can watch there. My original quilt used fabrics from our earlier collections and backgrounds with an ivory base. My new quilt will feature fabrics from a variety of our newer collections and backgrounds with a more off-white base.
How to Sew Along
Sewing along is simple! I won’t be sharing any more videos until my quilt is finished up, but I’ll be sharing the block designs here weekly on Fridays after this week. This week you can download the images for the first three blocks. I’ll share two blocks per week each Friday beginning next week. And the final set of blocks will be shared on Friday, June 20th!
Tips for Making Half Square Triangle Blocks
If you’re new to making Half-Square Triangles, you have several options:
- Make half-square triangles my favorite way by sizing up and trimming to your desired size.
- Use half-square triangle paper in your preferred size to make several identical half square triangles at a time.
- Use project left-overs as I’ve done in sewing triangles together from other projects and then trim as needed.
If your scrap bin is overflowing, I hope you’ll join in! I am making my blocks using 2″ finished half-square triangles, and I might end up doing an original setting with them…we’ll see how it goes!
Thanks so much for stopping by for today’s Half Square Triangle Scrappy Quilt post.
Happy quilting!

Hello, I downloaded the page with the first three blocks of the Scrappy Triangle quilt. I am wondering if there are any construction details??
sherri McConnell says
There are construction details in the pattern in my shop. I just wanted to make the layouts available each week for free for those who don’t need the extra instructions 🙂

I’ve always loved this quilt, and looking at my scrap bin it might be time to start some half square triangles!

I actually have hst’s stacked up that I didn’t get into a quilt! Thank you for the opportunity to use them and make more from the many, many charm packs I have. HST’s are my Favorite block!

I am excited to get started on this scrappy quilt. So beautiful. Where did you get your cute red and black scrap bins??
sherri McConnell says
Just added a link to purchase and photo of the red and navy little bins to this post!

Thanks so much Sherri! Should we press our seams open or towards the darker fabric for nesting?
sherri McConnell says
I’m pressing my seams open!

My quilt group have been exchanging HST’s for over a year and I haven’t done anything with all of the pieces. This is a perfect way to use all of them. Thank you 😊

Thanks so much for this. I really like your quilts. They are relatively easy to make and the colors are so well suited to my color palette. Thank you for this.

I have some 2 1/2″ HSTs with teal and blue backgrounds leftover from a couple of scrap quilts. So I’ll have a scrap quilt made out of scrap quilt scraps. Thanks for the layout ideas.

This sounds like so much fun and I am looking forward to sewing along as much as my sewing time allows. You sound very excited to start this and of course, that rubs off to me. Thank you!!

Will you be sending out updated copies to people who have previously purchased the pattern?
sherri McConnell says
No…this is a brand new update not just a small update.
