Hello, friends! Today I’m sharing a recent finish–a Half-Square Triangle Pillow in our Raspberry Summer fabrics. And I’ve got a free printable PDF for this project along with a couple of different finishing options. (Additionally, the pillow top would also make a great mini or table topper if you don’t need any pillows right now). Keep reading for all of the details on this super simple scrappy design.
Half-Square Triangle Pillow
Several years ago, I pieced together a half-square triangle pillow using our Creekside fabrics for a booth prop. I gifted the pillow to Chelsi and have always wanted to make another version to keep. I’ve also wanted to share the directions in a PDF format and have that ready for you today! Keep reading for the details and to download the pillow directions PDF along with an updated PDF for adding a zipper to a pillow back.
Pillow Details
I used a variety of 3″ squares in both print and light florals mixed with some of the tone-on-tone white fabrics from our Raspberry Summer collection arriving in stores in February 2025. Find the required materials listed below:
- Print Fabrics: (16) prints (Either (1) 10” Layer Cake square each, or a piece of scrap fabric measuring at least 3” x 6”)
- Background: ⅜ yard
- Binding: 1⁄4 yard
- Envelope Pillow Backing: 3⁄4 yard
- 19” x 19” piece of Light Solid Fabric or Muslin for
Inside of Pillow - 19” x 19” piece of Batting
- 16” x 16” Pillow Form
I had my friend Vicki do an all-over quilting design on the front along with an all-over design on the fabric I used for my backing. Instead of making an envelope pillow backing, I added a zipper and a zipper flap using this technique (keep reading for details on my updated PDF for this method). Also, there are actually two layout options for your half-square triangles on the pillow PDF. Click the button below to download the free PDF for the pillow.
Updated Zipper Pillow Back Finishing PDF
Along with the pillow pattern PDF, I’ve also got an updated PDF with details on the zipper pillow back I used for my pillow. You can download the new direction page for adding a zipper below:

Gee I wish I had seen your blog before I started teaching myself at 76. I watched a couple of tubes and got by. Now make them for different charities. They are not perfect and not real complicated ones as take too much time. But love making them and challenging myself to learn something new
