Hello! Did you know that the 50th Splendid Sampler block was released on August 4th? That means we are half-way through the 100 blocks! To celebrate the release of block 50 some of the Splendid Sampler designers are participating in a blog tour this week…and I was delighted to join in!
I counted my blocks, and I’ve made 25 up until now. Even though I’ve only
made half of the ones available, I’m very happy with my progress. 25 blocks is quite a few!
My most recent finish was number 50 itself, Flights of Fancy by Joanna Figueroa! I really love this block and haven’t ever made one quite like it!
I keep thinking I should have a plan for how I’m going to set these together, but I still don’t. My “plan” is just to keep making the ones I love and to try and make more of the applique’ blocks as well. When we get closer to the end I’ll decide what I’m going to do with my blocks based on how many I end up with.
I think that I having this no-pressure plan is making it even more fun for me to sew along…
How about you…do you have a plan for your Splendid Sampler blocks?
Thanks so much for stopping by!

All your blocks are so beautiful!
I know there's no way I could handle a quilt with all 100 blocks so I split my blocks into (at least) 4 quilts. One is a Halloween-FigTree-Styled version with 17 blocks, a red-and-white quilt with 20 or 24 or 25 blocks (see how well I planned that one?;-), a vintage-romantic version with probably 25 blocks and then a B&C version with 25 blocks.
I realized I don't want to make all the blocks don't get me wrong they are all beautiful but some are just not my style. I'll substitue them with blocks I love make either 2 or more of Splendid blocks I really love or other blocks.

Have no idea what I will do when finished, toying with couple of ideas, but I just like to sit and see what I have done so far, having learned much in this journey.
Dawn Zillich says
Before yesterday there was no plan, but I read a blogger I have followed for a while and she used a block in a pencil case. Then I remembered the bonus project using the paper pieced dress and thought I would use all the blocks in some sort of bag or case and give them to friends and family for Christmas.

I have been playing with sashing ideas in EQ7 (I made mock-ups of each block I did) but I haven't decided for sure what to do yet. Like you, I keep thinking I 'should' and then just enjoying the mystery!
Chris Green says
I had originally thought I would make a quilt for my bed. But a million new possibilities keep popping up. I think when I finish all my blocks will chose my favorites and make at least I quilt , and then some smaller projects. Will most certainly to include a wall hanging for my sewing room.
Nancy Wheatley says
I've come up with a couple of possible setting for a quilt and i did think about using some of the blocks for a wallhanging in my sewing room. Thank you for being part of the Splendid sampler.
Jan Taylor says
Sherri, I love your blocks with your figtree scraps. Yesterday was so fun making the kitchen sink wall hanging at Hollyhill. I learned so much. Hugs…Jan

I love your colors and I do not have a plan to assemble them yet. I figured I would wait to see what speaks to me at the end.
Lori Smanski says
your blocks are so very pretty. I agree with the no pressure sewing part.

Sherri,
Thank you so much for sharing your post and the photos of your beautiful blocks! My great aunt's birthday is in February and when the Splendid Sampler news arrived in that wintry month, she was on my mind. I decided I should make her the Splendid Sampler quilt in her favorite colors (peaches and greens). I have only made a few quilts in my time and never one on this scale. I am learning so much. I have blocks 1-25 complete. I recently saw a picture of someone who had finished their quilt with 50 blocks (some bonuses included I'm guessing as it was before the release of block 50!) and 50 solid 6 inch blocks between to make 100. I think I may go that route, too, so I could present this to her for Christmas this year. Then, I may use the other 50 in another quilt for my mother-in-law or another special crafty lady in my family. Time will tell. Thanks for asking and for sharing!
Liz Dyer says
I plan to make several small quilts with different themes and fabrics. It's been a fun journey. Thank you for participating.
Cindy Dickinson says
I have no plan. I'm just making the blocks when I can and having fun. I'll worry about the setting next year! Thanks for your block and for adding to the fun of the Splendid Sampler. You were a new designer to me, and I'm enjoying getting to know you online.
Christy Miller says
Hey Sherri, Heck yea, I have a plan. To get it all done just the way that suits me and makes me happy. In other words, the same plan you have. Bet a lot of us girls out there in Spendidville have the same game plan. BTW, I love your colorway. Have fun!
Oksana says
No plan for my blocks yet, inspiration sometimes needs to cook a while- but I did let chickens run through your Iowa!
Ava Troxler says
My plan right now is to border each block with colors from the quilt – I'm using bright colors. But that may change as I go along and frankly, it may be a small wall hanging. No pressure. I'm enjoying seeing what everyone is doing. Thank you for being a SS designer.
Quilt Knightly says
This will be my one lifetime sampler quilt and I am making it a big one! I'm aiming for 225 blocks, done in Browns, blacks, creams and whites and sashed with a deep, muted purple. Can't wait!
Susan P says
Beautiful! Love you fabric.
Pati, in Phx says
I am enjoying the Splendid journey. Eventually some/all the blocks will end up in at least one quilt or other project. Having fun and learning new skills is the name of the game here.
Patty Galbraith says
My SS quilt is going to be a gift for my great niece. Can not wait to finish it and give it to her.
Darlee Byron says
Generally, my plan is making the blocks. At the end, I'll decide what to do with them. I've only made two so far, and still have to decide if I'm working from 1 to 100; or making them from a checklist, favorites first. Deciding on color, seems the most difficult part.
Patrice Wiesner says
Hi Sherri, your blocks are cute & colorful! Thank you for your time & talent in the Splendid Sampler Program!!
Julie G-AZ says
I will put all of mine in a quilt to hang in my family room behind the sofa. Although I am not sure how many of the 100 I will complete. I will wait to see Pat's suggestions at the end on dashing before determining my final layout.

Sherri, I meant to tell you that I just bought your newest book holiday wishes. After a few UFOs are complete that is going to be the start of my next big project. I just love the cover quilt!
AuntWeda says
Thank you! I'm not sure how my blocks will come together, might be serveral baby quilts and a wall hanging or two for my sewing room.
Kim Gordon says
I look at your color palette and it just never ceases to amaze me of the variety of colors and prints used and how exciting it can be. I think we can get stuck in our ways sometimes and not look outside the "box" and yet, looking at everyone's work really helps that. I am truly loving this!
SheilaC says
I love the colors you chose for your blocks!
katiejane62 says
Your blocks are gorgeous. I love the fabrics. I am doing a different fabric color scheme for 1-25, 26-50, 51-75 and 76-100. It's making it challenging but I am not getting bored !!
Debbie says
The "plan" is my oldest granddaughter saw most of the blocks on my designs and the quilt is hers. Always happens here someone sees it before I am done and they decide how to finish!! Works for me.
Cathy says
I have done all the blocks and all the bonus blocks. Am stopping with my 30's fabric at #50, but continuing on with the Civil War fabric and the black/white/red blocks. I will have enough to blocks to make the whole family a quilt for Christmas next year at this rate!!! LOL. Loving the journey!!! Thanks you!
Robin Hussey says
Love your color scheme!! It is so fresh. Thank you for your hard work and contribution to this wonderful project.
Amanda Garvin says
I have no plan other than I am trying to keep the darks and lights balanced. 🙂 I love it.
Leslie says

Love your Splendid Sampler blocks. I have no plans for my blocks, simply enjoying the journey!
Janet Ward says
No, as of yet, I do not have a plan, if I know Pat Sloan, She has a plan in mind that will incorporate the bonuses with the actual Samplers… I too have loved the journey, but am much further behind… But have been keeping a promise to finish other UFOs that Pat made a challenge to us last year, and am slots done with that. I've been extremely excited to participate in this… And am looking forward to many more good times! Thank you for your Block, and I love your blog… Have fun… Blessings
The Low Family says
I love your choice of fabrics and block that you have completed so far…as far as a plan…no not really.
I do the blocks I feel like doing at the time but have a new found love of Paper Pieceing so am always excited to see one released.
NancyinSTL says
Like you, I've completed 25.
Camille V says
Looking forward to starting. So far, I am following and enjoying the experiences of others.
Laura Flaviani says
No plan. Never much of a planner.
Anita Jacksonn says
I am much like you in that I'm just going along as I please, doing which ever strikes my fancy~ I am in no hurry, and have no idea what my setting will be either. I'm sure the book will be out and have plenty of ideas for me to glean from! Looking forward to that too~
Jan N says
Having a great time sewing along with everyone, love your choice of fabrics. I'm still deciding on a setting for all of these lovelies. Thanks for all you do!

On a recent trip to WI, and doing a mini shop hop on my own, collecting patterns/kits to work on a row by row experience quilt, I felt like I found the perfect light grey fabric for my sashing. Just enough to frame each block and light enough to highlight each of the Splendid blocks. Hoping to do a 'quilt-as-you-go assembly' so something I can get started on now that we have completed 50 blocks!
Sandi1100 says
Your blocks are beautiful! I haven't started mine yet so don't have any idea of how to set them. I look forward to Sun and Thurs. to see the new block and read about the designer. Thanks to all of you for designing the blocks.
Sally Heilinger says
I'm planning on making a quilt using all 100+ blocks. I'll probably us a 1" sashing with corner stones.
Grandma K says
My blocks are being divided into 4 groups: Winter, Spring, Summer and 30's (only because I have an over abundance of fall quilts already) and they will be made into wall hangings. Working mainly from my stash as much as I can. This journey is really taking me out of my comfort zone and I'm loving it.
Darla says
I've had a couple of ideas floating around my brain for finishing. I think I will probably divide the blocks in half and make 2 lap quilts that are more manageable. Love seeing some of the quilts some of the members have started to put together and seeing what they have done with sashings and borders. Great inspiration.
mindi says
Your blocks are splendid! 🙂 I am so far behind….but I am in no hurry….
I don't really have a plan beyond the challenge of making so many blocks. Maybe a Splendid Sampler Block Swap can be in my future. There are so many quilters I know that are following along….maybe we can pick the blocks we want to do, and swap with someone doing the blocks we aren't so sure about.
This has become one of the best quiltalong projects I have ever been a part of!
Rosa says
So beautiful blocks and love your fabric combo.I have no plan.I`m so far behind, only have done the piecing ones.

Gorgeous blocks – love your colours!
