Hello and happy Tuesday! Today over on the Moda Cutting Table blog they are talking about pincushions…so I thought this might be a good time to post a few of my thoughts about the ever-so-useful staple in sewing baskets!
I’m definitely a pincushion kind of girl. I’ve always used them, and I prefer
them to some of the newer magnetic varieties for keeping pins (I do love my pin bowls, but I use them for paper clips and binding clips). Shortly before Christmas I made the lovely pincushion by Anna Graham found in her book Handmade Style: 23 Must-Have Basics to Stitch, Use, and Wear
. I really love this pincushion and have it sitting on my cutting table at all times with a few pins and some notions I like to have close at hand.
But I have other pincushions I love as well. I’ve got this groovy vintage-looking watermelon pincushion made by a friend that is amazing. It’s a good size and has crushed walnut shells inside (the perfect pincushion stuffing).
I also keep a smaller one right next to my sewing machine. Love this one, too!
I had some even smaller pincushions that I love for travel, but I gave them all away…I need to make a new one for myself. I shared this one recently…

I actually only use one pincushion for when I get ready to bind my quilts. Years ago my husband made me two dishes out of wood for my pins, and I love and use them all the time. Seeing all of your lovely pincushions though makes me want to make them, just to decorate my sewing room with them. They are all so cute and special looking!

I love pincushions too! From the classic tomato pincushion to the funky chicken one. But, probably my favorite (at least for now) is one I made from a Dawn Heese pattern. I had to make one when Dawn visited our guild and was using hers!

I believe you meant to say your pin cushion is stuffed with walnut shells, not watermelon shells??

I have a few pincushions but honestly I use just one. But that's okay for me because I use rarely pins;-)

I have lots of pincushions. They are my quick 'go to' gift for my sewing friends and I have a tradition of making new ones every Christmas for my friendship group. I have made Cute as A Button twice already, gifted the first one and just need to close the seam on the second before I show it off on Instagram. Your hint on sewing the end is fabulous…works like a charm every time! I need to made Anna's pincushion, I bought the book just for that pattern and it fell off my radar! And congrats on the sweet new grand! Adorable!

I have at least 3 and I use all of them. I have a skinny one that sits by my sewing machine, a 'wagon wheel' (Noodlehead freebie) in my main sewing room, and a stuffed trilobite one sitting by my cutting mat!

I do not have any filled with nut shells
Isn't that bad for the pins?
Anyway, I have three wooly ones I made from olden wool clothing, and I have a fancy bowl that I put my pins in near the iron.
I do not like magnets, bc they make my pins stick together and to the scissors and then I get nutty.
