Hello, friends! I’ve been spending a little time over the past couple of weeks (and actually throughout the summer) making changes to my sewing room. Today’s Sewing Room Refresh September 2024 post is all about those changes. I added and subtracted furniture, hung up some new quilts, and even moved some current pieces into new spaces. Plus, I have some new ideas for organizing in your space. Keep reading for all of the details.

Sewing Room Refresh September 2024
Furniture
I’ve been looking for a console of some sort with doors to store my fabric in for quite a little while. I was super delighted to find the new cabinet while shopping for a refrigerator! I knew it would be the perfect storage solution for my fabric and that the glass doors on the front would also help protect the fabric. The drawers to store notions are a fun bonus! The new console measures 70″ long, 43″ tall, and 18″ deep. And I love the splash of color this piece adds to the room while not detracting from the quilts and fabrics. (Note: my ironing station was custom made for me).
Sewing Machines
When I first purchased my new Bernina sewing machine earlier this year, I moved my Janome sewing machine to our guest room. Ever since then I’ve been wanting to move it back to my sewing room so that I can sew with friends or family members! This sewing room refresh allowed me to do that and to move the older sewing machine back in where I previously had two Ikea bookcases for fabric storage. This move also allowed me to hang a fun quilt above the machine, my Summer House wall hanging pieced with our Laguna Sunrise fabrics.
Fabric Storage
I have fabrics in several different places now. Fabrics are stored in cupboards and the closet but also in the new console and in the built in shelves. I currently have a few bolts on a small bookcase next to the Janome sewing machine but plan to move those into the built in shelves soon. I do keep the shutters completely closed when I’m not working in my space to prevent sun and light damage to my fabrics.
Pattern and Notion Storage
I’m still doing a little rearranging of my sewing notions–making sure to keep my most-used items in easy to get to drawers and cabinets or on the Ikea worktable in the corner. And while moving things around I happily found a new container for storing patterns. I currently have a lot of patterns stored in the filing drawers of my main cutting table. By moving patterns out of those drawers I’m able to store catalogs and other letter-sized patterns more easily. This also freed up some space in my office drawers!

I love everything about this post, and your room is beautiful. One question, though – I have a similar console in my dining room. Your idea of using it in the sewing room is something I’ll remember when we downsize to a smaller house. My thought is, though, what about the sunlight fading the areas of the fabrics exposed to the light. I’ve bought FQ’s from shops without realizing the faded spot until I’m home and have opened up the FQ. What are your thoughts about protecting the fabric?

She said in the post that she only opens her blinds while she is in the room working. The remaining time they’re closed. However, she does spend a lot of time in there sewing. That makes me wonder if they should be closed all the time or maybe think of changing to another type of window treatment. Just just my two cents, which usually isn’t much 😊

Looks great! And hope it works for you!
Love the tall wood cabinet with fabrics! I hope you had it anchored to the wall securely since you will be pulling things off the shelves.
And hope you have a sturdy step ladder stashed conveniently nearby to reach the top shelves!!
Thanks for all the inspirations!

What kind of finish is on the shelves that will not react with the fabrics and quilts to spoil them? I just acquired an antique china cabinet with a full glass door and wooden shelves. I want to store my quilts on the shelves but need to know what kind of finish to use on the wood. The inside of my cabinet will need the same product applied.
Lynn Young says
It’s mainly raw wood that releases residues you need to protect your quilts from, like a cedar chest (which was meant to protect wool from moths during warm months, not permanent storage). Since you don’t know exactly what you China cabinet is finished with, you could add a clear sealant to be sure it is safe. Ask at a real hardware/paint store for a product that will seal the wood. Let it dry at least a week before placing quilts on it!
You also can get acid free paper to line the shelves if you dont want to alter the finish on the cabinet.

Beautiful new cabinet Sherri! It goes perfectly with your other items in the room. How big is your sewing room (approximately)? Do you have a maker name and model on that piece of furniture? Thanks so much!! Hugs, H

Sherri,
The link for the pattern container isn’t working. It pops up for a second showing it as a Marie Kondo container, but doesn’t go to the page. Is that because they no longer produce it? Just wondering.

Hmmm…not sure…it was working just a couple of days ago. Maybe they have sold out?
