I’m super excited to post today about Kim Brackett’s recent book, Scrap-Basket Sensations: More Great Quilts from 2 ½″ Strips . Scrap-Basket Sensations is Kim’s second book (her first book was Scrap-Basket Surprises: 18 Quilts from 2-½ inch Strips (That Patchwork Place), and both books are published by Martingale & Company. (Along with introducing you to the book I get to give away a copy)!!!
As you can see, I’ve already started on the cover quilt, “Picnic!” I plan on using fabric from Central Park along with some scraps from my stash. The blocks have been easy to piece and go together quickly. This has been a fun quilt to work on…you can’t finish a block without wanting to start another!
Next on my list is “Over and Under.” I’m planning to make this quilt with Amy Butler fabrics! One thing I love about all the quilts in Kim’s book is the little box titled “Cutting from Scraps” at the start of each pattern. Kim let’s you know exactly how many pieces you need if you’d like to make the quilt from scraps rather than using jelly rolls (of course, she also gives directions for using pre-cut jelly roll strips which really saves on cutting time).
I had a few questions for Kim which she kindly answered for my stop on the tour…
Me: Which comes first, the fabric or the design?
Kim: The design always comes first. I don’t have enough confidence to cut into fabric without a plan!
Me: How do you sketch your designs–graph paper or computer or by playing around with the fabric?
Kim: I enjoy playing with Electric Quilt software to draw the blocks, then trying out different arrangements to see what happens. Sometimes adding different elements, such as a pieced sashing or an alternate block, reveals a totally different design that I would never have imagined. As I “color” the design with fabrics, I keep in mind different fabric collections I’d like to use, or a color scheme that I like.
Me: What is your favorite block?
Kim: My favorite block is Scrap-Basket Paddlewheel. It was one of those “accidental” designs, and it was really fun to make. The sample quilt was made from scraps of fabrics from some of my favorite Moda designers (some of the fabrics going back to the 90s!).
Me: Do you have a favorite quilt in the book?
Kim:It’s impossible for me to choose a favorite — each one is special to me for different reasons. My favorite quilt to work on was Bali Breeze. I enjoyed piecing it (no points to match!), and I enjoyed working with all the beautiful batik fabrics.
Me: Do you have a favorite quilting “tip” to share?
Kim: You don’t have to use every strip in a Jelly Roll or Bali Pop. Sometimes I use the darkest strips with a single light background fabric, saving the lighter strips for a future project. I also like to mix and match fabric collections to create a “scrappier” look. Some of my favorite quilts you’ve shared on your blog, Sherri, are the ones that combine different fabric collections. As a lover of scrap quilts, the more fabrics I can squeeze in, the better!
(The quilt above is “Scrap-Basket Paddle Wheel,” which contains the block Kim mentioned as her favorite)!
I’d really like to thank Kim for the inspiration she shares through her books and her blog–she’s just amazing! I remember leaving a comment with a question on Kim’s blog over a year ago, and she took the time to not only fully answer my question but also to give me some great ideas and insights…I’ve always appreciated and remembered that! I know you’ll love this book AND be inspired to create your own “Scrap-Basket Sensations!
Be sure to stop by all of these blogs for their day on the tour (tomorrow’s stop is with Mary)…and leave a comment on this post if you’d like to win a copy of Kim’s book!

I love the thought of using jelly rolls for this. I just learned about them and realize how much of a time saver they are. I live in Europe full time so I don't get to go to JoAnn or other quilt fabric stores. When I saw these on a visit in August, I thought – whatever are these for… that was one of those "duh" moments. Now I know! Love your blog!
Victoria says
