Happy Friday! Today is the first post in my 2018 Mystery Block of the Month series. The series will run very similar to last year’s. I’ll post a block each month around the 20th. There will be twelve blocks this year; however, this year’s block will just be presented in one size. Blocks will finish at 12 ½″–just a little bit bigger than last year’s blocks.
As I was deciding what to do this year my hardest decision was deciding what
fabrics to use for my blocks. I loved using a bundle for last year’s quilt that had just been sitting for a couple of years, and so I decided to try to do the same thing this year.
I absolutely loved the Nomad collection by Urban Chiks for Moda from a couple of years ago and still had most of a fat eighth bundle sitting in a cupboard. So I pulled it out and will put other fabrics along with it. I’m using the tone on tone cream from our The Front Porch collection for my background fabric! These oranges, golds, and blues have always been a color combination I love…yet I’ve never made a bigger quilt with them. So I’m pretty excited about this.
I also thought about doing this quilt with Christmas scraps and may end up making two versions…we’ll see!
I know a lot of you like to have yardages early on, and I’ll try to have that done by month three at the latest (I’ll also get a landing page set up by then where I’ll have links to all of the blocks). What I would suggest for now is to start with a fat eighth bundle and a couple of yards of background fabric. Or, do what I’m doing and just pick a background fabric and start sorting some favorite scraps!
Happy sewing! You can find the PDF download for this month’s pattern here!
Thanks so much for stopping by!

I love this block; easy to sew but eye catching. The orange fabric really makes it pop!

Cute block! I think I make a smaller one even if you make just one size this year.

That is a very good looking block! I know lots of folks are allergic to the color orange, but I like it. 🙂

Was looking for a BOM to join into to help improve my quilting. Got your info in my Bloglovin notice and knew right away this was it. Thank you so much for taking the time to share with us.

My version of last year’s BOM became a very well-received Christmas gift; going this route again this year 🙂

Sherri, thank you. The block is beautiful. I read your blog on most days of the week. You are my favorite blogger. I'm amazed at how much you do. God must give you the strength.

I love the block and the tip is using Christmas scraps. I think that’s my choice

Love this block per month idea.I just jumped in. I learned to quilt all by hand on Martha's Vineyard Island. Years ago we made a block per week and it was STAR patterns. Everyone completed their one twin size quilt and the insomniacs made two each! FUN!
Haven't quilted in years, so I am excited. I will use my fabric stash collected for my son. Thanks!
