Hello, friends, and happy August! Today I’m sharing the Quilt Block of the Month August 2024 blocks. This month’s blocks can be as scrappy as you’d like since you’ll have lots of different half-square triangle units in the block centers. You can create the star with a pinwheel center and an outer accent color like I did, or have fun with placement options and come up with something unique. Keep reading for all of the details and this month’s block video.

August Block Details: Large Flying Geese + Half Square Triangles
This month’s blocks use lots of half-square triangles, and if you’ve been saving some of the leftovers from earlier months, you might just be able to use several of them. I was able to use leftovers for both of my blocks. And I ended up just having to make a few new half square triangle units for my block centers. I also used the Bloc Loc 4″ x 8″ finished Flying Geese Ruler for the large flying geese this time around. I felt like this tool is a great option if you struggle with these blocks or just want them perfect. (Hear more about that on today’s video).

I love the idea of using the chain block with the scrappy half square triangles blocks. I just am not seeing the pattern. I know there will be a 9-patch block and scrappy triangles block connected with 1 inch sashings and a post or small cornerstone. I do appreciate all you do. I always look forward to your BOMs and free patterns. I have purchased several of yours and Chelsea’s patterns, but thought this would be adorable using leftover HSTs that I have kept.
I am through a series of 24 chemo treatments and think this would be a wonderful project to work on on my good days in between treatments and then surgery.
I do enjoy the videos that you, Chelsea, and Billy share. They are wonderful and such a blessing. God bless you all in your endeavors and through life.
Thanks,
Pamelia Wimberly

We updated the description to the video the day it aired with a direct link to the post with the PDF for the hst finishing. Early in the day the link wasn’t there, but it is easy to find now from the video description. Thank you! We’re sorry that link was missing for a few hours 🙂

I love your setting for the scrappy triangles. Now my dilemma is do I put it together with what I have or wait for Raspberry Summer to come out next year. I love the dark blue you have used. I am thinking I will work on what I have with other quilts and wait!!

I’m just joining. Love your videos. I’m trying to do the BOM blocks. I wish you address whether to do 8 1/2 inch or 16 1/2 inch blocks and how many to make of each for a completed quilt at the end of the 12 months. I realize 12 8 1/2inch blocks won’t make a very big quilt, so should I double down on making the 8 1/2 inch blocks each month? Thank you.
sherri McConnell says
I did share a little about this in our January video–you can do both sizes or just the small or just the large. I will have settings for one of each size at the end of the year. But you are always free to use any setting you’d like 🙂
Thank you!
