Sometimes just one quilt can can completely make your day. That’s how I felt about my patriotic “Ric Rac” quilt. It’s finished–well, ready to be quilted at least (after I figure out a backing). I seriously heart this quilt. It’s one of those quilts that turned out exactly how I pictured it would–or even better. When I first saw Carrie’s “Ric Rac” pattern I knew exactly what fabrics I’d use (patterns are like that sometimes, aren’t they–sometimes they are just calling out to made with certain fabrics)!
So I used bits and pieces from charm packs of Bar Harbor and Charlevoix, both by Minick and Simpson for Moda. I also added in some neutrals from my stash–a couple from other Minick and Simpson lines and a couple from other Moda lines. Luckily I had some Bar Harbor for the outer border and binding.
I changed it up a little from the pattern; the pattern uses the sashing fabric as the outer border, but I used a different fabric for my outer border.
I already have plans for this quilt this summer…it’s going to be great as a 4th of July table topper…or maybe even just resting on a wicker chair during all the festivities!
Just a couple of thoughts on the pattern…if you choose to make “Ric Rac” you should know that the entire quilt (other than sashing and borders) is made up of triangles–a lot of triangles. It goes together well; however, it does take a little time. There are lots of bias edges to be careful of and lots and lots of angles to line up. You should be sure to have a lot of contrast between your darks and lights (as Carrie suggests), and it helps to look at the cover picture when lining up your “ric rac” rows.
And…from yesterday’s parade…
Bear Paw Quilts and More will be sending a really cute potholder kit to Amanda from my parade (see Sinta’s blog for a picture).
Quilter’s Paradise will be sending a $15 gift certificate to Simone from Sinta’s parade.
And Quilt Taffy will be sending a “sweet treat” gift certificate to LeAnn from my parade.
Congratulations to everyone…have a great day!
