Hello, friends! Today I’m sharing a Grandmother’s Flower Garden Quilts and Projects Roundup. There is a little backstory behind this–last week I was able to teach a wonderful group how to make English paper pieced Grandmother’s Flower Garden blocks. While rounding up quilts and projects to share with the class, I was amazed at how many of these projects I’ve made. If you love this technique then you’ll find helpful posts and projects here.

Grandmother’s Flower Garden Quilts and Projects Roundup
I hope you’ll enjoy this Grandmother’s Flower Garden Quilts and Projects roundup. I’m actually sharing the quilts I’ve made with this technique in mostly chronological order. I share a little bit of inspiration about each quilt and also share the pattern/tutorial link. Two of the projects in this post are free 🙂

Flowers for Emma
Flowers for Emma was the first hexagon flower pattern I made and wrote. This quilt is super scrappy with flowers and backgrounds all from my stash. I sewed these flowers on airplanes, in the car, on vacation, and even at sew when I taught on a quilting cruise. This pattern was originally in American Patchwork & Quilting and also is a tribute to my great-great grandmother Emma who also pieced these Flower Garden blocks back in the 1930’s but never finished her quilt (my great aunt later put Emma’s blocks together into a quilt).
Blooms
Blooms was pieced with our Balboa collection. We were thrilled to be able to have pre-cut hexies with that group which made it super easy to put this together.
Sweet
Sweet was my next Grandmother’s Flower Garden pattern. I just couldn’t help myself from combining my love of churn dash blocks with these delightful flowers. The version above is pieced with our Happy Go Lucky collection.
Bouquet
And then there was Bouquet! I made this quilt using scrappy fabrics from a lot of our collections with an emphasis on our Seashore Drive group. This one is definitely one of my favorites because of how scrappy it is!
Emma’s Garden
A few years ago, we created a fabric collection in tribute to my Great-Great Grandmother Emma who I mentioned above. So, I decided that I definitely needed another Grandmother’s Flower Garden quilt to go along with this collection.
Flower Garden Medley
I adored making Grandmother’s Flower Garden blocks with our Strawberry Lemonade collection and designed a pattern with smaller projects to help quilters and shops have a less-daunting project to make in order to try out this method. The pattern includes a little table mat, pillow, and table topper option with four flowers.
Framed Hexagons Project
This darling framed hexagon project pictured above is actually a free tutorial here on the blog. There is also an option for a larger framed piece. Mine above is pieced with our Clover Hollow collection–I made this for a little table display for Quilt Market.
Strawberry Lemonade Pillow or Table Mat with Hexagon Flower Center
Another project I shared with a Grandmother’s Flower Garden block was this pillow or table mat. (If you don’t want a hexagon flower center, you can also piece it with squares). This pattern is available as a free download but is also available in print from my shop.
More Hexagon Ideas
As you can see, I really love designing with these blocks. Stay tuned for another Hexagon quilt pattern coming later this year!
Happy quilting!

When my partner was diagnosed with prostate cancer I thought oh I can make a hexi flower while I’m waiting for his radiation treatment. One block for each treatment. I thought he was having 45, it was actually 40. Long story short, to make a queen size, I appliqued 45 flowers, added 4 blank blocks. The wonderful thing that came about is I found a church that the ladies hand quilted it for me. When they finished it they asked me to teach them how to make them, we started a little group, called ourselves the hexi girls. We meet up almost every week, go on retreats etc. I’m in my late 60s and have found the best friends I’ve ever had in my life all thanks to EPP Grandmother’s Flower Garden!

I have a traditional Grandmother’s Flower Garden quilt that my great-great grandma, Ida Beeson Walker, started, and my great grandma, Elfleda Barker Walker, finished. I’ll have to email you a picture! There are quite a lot of feed sack prints and scraps from clothing they made for themselves and their families. Ask of the centers are yellow 💛
