It’s been quite a little while since I put the blocks for this quilt top together (fabric It’s a Hoot by Moda and “Mini Wild Thing” pattern from “Pint-Sized” by Camille). I pieced the blocks using a charm pack long before yardage was available for the borders, and just couldn’t decide on border fabric even after the yardage was available.
You might remember this picture from about a week ago. I had finally decided on the print on the right for my outer border for the “Mini Wild Thing,” but I still hadn’t decided on the inner border–I was playing around with the idea of just using the white background I’d used in the quilt. These two fabrics weren’t purchased to be used together, but after looking at the photo I knew I’d found the perfect inner border for my little quilt (the fabric on the left is from the collection Sunkissed by Sweetwater for Moda)!
I’m so happy with how it went together: how the grey is such a perfect neutral, how the soft gingham provides a light “resting” spot for the eyes in such a pattern-filled quilt, and how the two borders work together.
I made the borders just a bit smaller than the ones in the pattern…my finished quilt is 36 ½″ by 42 ½″–the perfect size for a baby quilt–or, in my case, to decorate a wall in your studio!
I’m not going to worry so much about some of my unfinished projects without borders. Maybe they’re really still “unfinished” because my eye hasn’t caught the right color combination yet. And color play is definitely one of the best things about quilting!

You are right. That gray gingham is just the right ticket. I never would have thought of it, because I would have thought the gingham was too busy. I think the border is just perfect too. Ties in all the colors. Honestly, the borders really just pull this whole quilt together so beautifully!
