I had so much fun with the Blogger’s Quilt Festival (hosted by Amy over at Park City Girl) last spring that it was a definite for this fall. Today I’ve decided to share my very first sampler quilt made in 2004. I’d been quilting for a few years before getting the courage to sign up for this block of the month at one of my favorite quilt shops, The Christmas Goose. I’d never done anything but simple quilts before starting this project and didn’t have a ¼ inch foot for my machine when I made it. So…it has a few cut-off corners, but I love it anyway!
The quilt is from the book At Piece with Time: A Woman’s Journey Stitched in Cloth by Kristin C. Steiner & Diane C. Frankenberger. The book was delightful in and of itself…sometimes I still browse through it for inspiration. If you are familiar with this book and quilt you will recognize that there is a lot of applique’ in the original pattern. I was definitely too afraid to try the applique’ when I made this; every once in a while I think about making it again…with the applique’!
Just a few more things going on in my sewing room…yesterday Love arrived via the USPS! Yes, Amy Butler’s new line…I’d ordered a few fat quarters and love them all. In fact, I couldn’t wait to sew with them and made a posy flower block right away–now I just need to decide what to do with the block! I have a project in mind for the fat quarters that I’ll get going on next week as well.
This is the time of year I start collecting “piles” in my sewing room…piles of projects for Christmas gifts. I’ve started several…think I need to finish a few before I start any more piles!

Another pile…Simple Abundance with some Shangri-La added in…they coordinate wonderfully! These triangles will make up the border blocks for this applique’ block I just finished. This project is from the new Lori Smith book Fat Quarter Quilting…I love Lori’s designs and am working on two right now.

Hi Sherri, I know how you feel with all the Christmas projects growing larger and larger. Just thinking of the time going by so fast is a little scarry. Love the new Amy's fabric.
You sure couldn't tell you didn't have a 1/4" foot on your quilt.
Have a great and blessed weekend,
Bonnie

Your quilt is very good. I used to know Kristen Steiner when I lived in South Carolina.
Your Lori Smith block is something that I really like. What size is the block. I have some of Lori's patterns but don't know if I have this one.

A great sampler quilt. We all cut off corners, still do sometimes. How was that quilt quilted? It looks like it has some dimension to it.
Love, what a great name for fabric.
Love that applique block for sure.

Sherri, I love your Year Of Schnibbles. They are such great patterns. Lisa D. suggested I contact you, I own Keepsake Cottage Fabrics, and she works for me.
I have had people call for the patterns you are using, and I would love to have them in early. I happened to have the 1st two, but was hoping to find out early, so I could be sure to have them in stock. I would be happy to donate doorprizes.
Great idea, and a darling blog! Julie

congratulations on having figured out how to quilt in your sleep! Now can you share the secret with the rest of us? 🙂
The Amy Butler fabric is really pretty. Nice colors. And I love the way you can mix and match a lot of the Moda lines. My local shop doesn't always carry an entire line, but it seems like there's always something the next season that I can add to my stash that coordinates well with the other pieces.
Your applique block is beautiful. Lori Smith's patterns are wonderful.
Kaaren says
Great sampler, Sherri. I didn't have a 1/4" for my first quilt either and wondered why the pieces didn't fit after taking such pains with the cutting. I just assumed…
Live and learn, huh?
Brenda says
Isn't the pile method just wonderful. I too use it to get Christmas presnts finsihed. Love your quilt.

I popped on over from parkcitygirl and love your quilt, the free motion work looks great. I loooove Amy Butlers new line, wow. I live in Australia and have to wait too long to get it here, so I will be buying off the net from the U.S

Sherri, that's a beautiful sampler. Love the quilting design. I see by your new project that you have gotten over your fear of applique!! I love the new Amy Butler love fabric. I am making a list of cool ideas to try and buy as I make my way through the festival entries, (You can see I still have a long way to go!!) and I have added this to my list. I like the fabric combination of Simple Abundance and Shangri La. I have a few charm packs of Shangri La that don't have a project destination. You've given me a good idea. Thanks for sharing.
