I would like you to address copyright laws as they pertain to quilt patterns. How do you avoid infringing on someone’s copyright? I think it would be impossible to be sure a pattern is not already copyrighted. Thank you.

This is a great topic, and we have talked about it a lot on our podcast. While this isn’t legal advice, here in a nutshell is how I understand it:
Quilt blocks aren’t usually covered by copyright laws, but patterns are. Someone’s written directions, illustrations, and formatting of a quilt design is the intellectual property that is able to by copyrighted.
Obviously, no one has a copyright for the nine-patch block, but there are thousands of patterns using that block as a basis for the design. It is the written pattern that cannot be copied. So if you don’t copy someone’s published quilt and instructions you are generally going to be okay unless it is a blatant copycat project.
