Hello, friends! Today I’m excited to share a fabulous Bookmark Pen Holder Tutorial that is perfect for gift giving (or to make for yourself)! I first learned about this fabulous pattern when I attended the Modavation retreat for shop owners in Dallas in June 2024. I came home and made dozens (actually over 100) for gifts for friends and family. This darling design is by Tammy Vonderschmitt and Dawn Cornell who presented it at the event. Keep reading for the video tutorial and to download the free PDF pattern.

Bookmark Pen Holder Tutorial
Bookmark Pen Holder Details
The bookmark pen holder finishes at approximately 2 ยฝ″ x 8 ยฝ″ and is perfect as a bookmark for simple journals and notebooks or for standard-sized hard-cover books. It’s so convenient to have a pen/highlighter handy when writing or reading, and this project is one you’ll want to make again and again! Materials required for one bookmark are below:
- Scraps or Layer Cake squares for (2) 3″ x 9″ rectangles for the bookmark front and back
- Scraps or Layer Cake squares for (1) 3″ x 10″ rectangle for contrast pocket
- (1) 3″ x 5″ and (1) 3″ x 9″ Pellon Sew in Interfacing (I also successfully used ShapeFlex Fusible Interfacing on some of my bookmarks).
- 9″ of Fold Over Elastic–Find it Here
- That Purple Thang point turner
- Clover Wonder Clips

I think these are so darling! But I need someone to explain how you would put the bookmark in the book with a pen in it? Wouldnโt it be too thick? Am I looking at this the wrong way? Help because I want to make some!
Wendy says
The pen holder goes to the outside of the book and the elastic goes around the page youโre up to Hope this makes sense
Kathie says
I t would be helpful to tell how to adjust pattern for size of book or notebook
Lisa G :-) says
I agree! Or at least tell what size notebook they are designed to fit. If you make it too tight, it will bend your notebook and if you make it too loose it will not stay put.

I’m using 8 1/2″ tall notebooks–but they also work on books slightly smaller and larger ๐
