Hello, everyone and welcome to the 2024 Quilt Block of the Month: January post. I’m super excited to be once again sharing a block of the month program with you all. I hope you’ll enjoy sewing along this year. Keep reading for all of the details for this year’s sew along and for the pattern download link.
January 2024 Quilt Block
Block Details
This year all of the blocks will feature an outer star with an inner block. If you want to get ahead, you can make all of the outer star point now. (I’m actually going to just make mine month by month, though, in case I change my mind on some of my fabric choices). The larger blocks this year will finish at 16″ while the smaller size blocks will finish at 8″. Download your free PDF pattern by clicking on the button below. (BOM paid subscribers will have receive the PDF link by email earlier today).

- This year’s blocks will feature both 16″ and 8″ finished sizes of blocks.
- There will be a setting for each size quilt provided in early December 2024.
- This year block patterns and videos will be available on the first Monday of each month here on the blog. I will also post a video that day on our YouTube channel where I’ll go into more detail about the month’s block and share tutorials.

Oh this BOM is going to be fun. Anxiously waiting for my preorders of Strawberry Lemonade to arrive. Can’t wait to get my hands on this gorgeous fabric! Thank you for this years BOM. They are always so much fun. I like that you changed up the sizes this year too. Looking forward to the third setting option as well. I think combining the 8 inch and 16 inch blocks could be very interesting.

How much of Strawberry Lemonade and background (both :)) did you buy? I love the fabric line and want to get enough.
Dodie says
Can I see the whole quilt so I can see if I want to do all star blocks?
sherri McConnell says
It’s a mystery quilt, sorry!

Judith Diani says
I could not find the setting for the finished 2024 quilt in your early December 2023 blogs.
I did see the finished 2023 arrangement.
Was this a typo…would love to see what you have in mind for the 2024 quilt.
If it’s not figured yet, please let me know.
Thanks. Looking forward…I love the outer “border” idea of each block.
sherri McConnell says
You can download the 2023 setting PDF from the December block post and see exactly what your finishing options are. It’s in a separate file but also has a download button from that post.
2024 is still a mystery!
thanks so much for sewing along.

Good morning and Happy New Year! I really like the idea of doing this BOM with the Strawberry Lemonade fabric, but I am having difficulty finding where you have listed the amounts needed for doing all of the blocks. I saw the amounts for the background and the star borders on the January block–does this mean that a FQ bundle will be enough for all the centers? I’m asking because I know how fast this line will sell out!
Stephanie J Ernst says
I’m going to use some of my Coriander Quilts stash for this years quilt. I’m looking forward to another wonderful project from Sherri. Can’t wait to see all the postings on Facebook with everyone’s choices!
Kathrie says
What is the FB page where people post their progress?
Lisa Mathis says
I love your BOM’s! How much fabric should we be planning for beyond the background yardages noted in the January pattern?
sherri McConnell says
You can find all of those details on the Fabric Requirements PDF which is linked in the 2024 Sew Along section on this post. Thank you!
SHAR says
How much yardage is needed for the whole quilt? I’ve downloaded this month’s block but I want to ensure I have enough for the whole quilt.
Thanks.
sherri McConnell says
Download the fabric requirements PDF from the information post on this year’s sew along. It’s linked under the 2024 BOM Sew Along Information list.

Carla Minor says
Thank you for these amazing patterns Sherri! Can’t wait to see what you have in store for 2024!
Gretchen Zdorkowski says
I sent a comment yesterday about not being able to find the fabric requirements for the BOMC. Of course, I found the link about three minutes after I sent off the comment. Sorry! Old eyes, I guess :-/
Tami says
Is the finished quilt size of 60 1/2 x 78″ based on the 8 inch block or the 16 inch block? Just wondering if we do extra of the blocks if we are doing the 8 inch one?
sherri McConnell says
That larger size is for the 16″ finished blocks. You can find the finished size of the smaller block quilt on the fabric requirement PDF. Thank you!
Bex says
So beautiful! Thank you!!
Sandra Keske says
Did I miss the fabric requirements somewhere ??
sherri McConnell says
Find them on the introductory post for this year’s sew along. It’s linked under the 2024 Block of the Month Sew Along Section here on today’s post.
Janet says
Hi Sherri, this block is darling and I’d love to make a quilt just like you’re showing how you made the blocks. Are there fabric requirements so I can know what Strawberry Lemonade fabrics to buy? I wonder how much yardage of each fabric or how many layer cakes or jelly rolls it will take to complete all 12 -16” & 8” blocks just as you are showing. I worry that if I just go month by month, some fabrics will be gone by the end of the year. Thank you, Janet
sherri McConnell says
Download the fabric requirements PDF from the information post on the quilt along. That post is linked under the 2024 Block of the Month Sew Along section.
Janice Czechowsky says
How can I order the fabric? Cannot seem to find a link.
Thanks
sherri McConnell says
Fabric is shipping later this month!
Janice Czechowsky says
but how do I get on the ordering list? and pay for it? That way when it is ready to ship I would be on the list?
Thanks
Janice Czechowsky says
Perhaps I am asking the wrong question.
How do I become a subscriber?
Thanks
Jan

I watched your video yesterday, and can’t wait to get started! Do you have a post with the fabric requirements for this year’s BOM? I haven’t been able to locate one, sorry if you have and I’m overlooking it. Thank you for doing this!
sherri McConnell says
Yes, I just added a link to it from this post under the 2024 Quilt Block of the Month Sew Along Section. There is a PDF of the fabric requirements you can download from that post. Thanks!
Sharon Baumgard says
I watched the video. So excited to get started. Where do I find the monthly block count – fill in the bubbles?
sherri McConnell says
There is a link to download that towards the end of this post!
Lauren Opgenorth says
So excited for this year’s BOM! And all the blocks having a sawtooth star border? I love it!
Question on background fabric: the Fabric Requirements PDF says I need 2-1/2 yards background for blocks/inner border (for the 16″ blocks) BUT the January pattern says I need 2-1/2 yards for the outer sawtooth stars alone. I cut all the outer sawtooth star pieces (48, 4.5″ squares and 48, 4.5″ x 8.5″ rectangles) for the year, and I only have about a half a yard left from my 2-1/2 yard piece. Will I need to plan on buying more?
And along those lines – will the 24 FQs required be enough for both the outer sawtooth stars and the inner blocks?
Thanks for your help, and for providing these patterns so generously each year!
sherri McConnell says
The background needed for the inner blocks is very minimal, so you should be fine.
And yes, the 24 FQ’s will give you enough for the outer sawtooth stars and the inner blocks.
Thank you for sewing along!
Dawn says
I downloaded the fabric requirements but could not figure out how much yardage we would need if we make all the star frames with the same fabric as mentioned in the Jan block notes. Would like to know what that may be for both block sizes. Thanks, Dawn
Jan says
Where can I subscribe?
sherri McConnell says
If you email me at info@aquiltinglife.com I can find out your preference and make sure you are subscribed in the manner you’d like (weekly newsletter option or emails with each post). Thank you!
Rebecca Wolfe says
So, on the directions they show Fabric A,Medium/Dark, B, Light, and C, Light. But B and C appear to be the same color/fabric, both being the background fabric. Is that correct? (this is for the Monthly Star Borders. In the center star it appears E and D are the same fabric, the background background fabric again. Is this correct?
sherri McConnell says
You can use whatever color variations you want. I think that is why the patterns are in grayscale so that you can experiment with different shadings and not feel obligated to make your block a certain way 🙂
Carra says
Thank you for another fantastic BOM pattern! I love the larger 16″ block this time with the 4″ finished square in the middle…perfect for showing of beautiful fabric prints or embroidery. I will make a few extra blocks for embroidered pillows to gift.
Carole Garrison says
What is the name of the triangle ruler with the corner cut off. I could not find your earlier tutorial. My first BOM with you. Love your blockhead blocks. I’ve done two other of your quilts. You’re so talented. Thank you for doing this for free.
sherri McConnell says
It’s the Mini Simple Folded Corners ruler. I have a video tutorial on YouTube sharing my favorite ways to use the ruler 🙂
Jennie Straynick says
I have never done a BOM but I feel confident with you teaching along the way. Your tutorials have always been very helpful to me! I came across a fat eighth bundle of Lela Boutique’s Folk Tale along with a of coordinating fabric and 4 yards of a coordinating Bella Solid. The fat eighth bundle has 34 prints. Do you think I would have enough from this bundle to make all of the 8″ blocks? I will be using tone on tone whites from a separate stash for the background.
sherri McConnell says
Yes, you should be fine!
Jennie Straynick says
Yay! Thank you for responding! I just finished Block One (8″) and I LOVE it! I was a little nervous about the small pieces but I took my time and enjoyed piecing them all together.
I decided to do grunge for my background because it looked so good with the 2021 Folktale fabric line. I will have to post the pic on Facebook so Chelsi can see it. I know it’s one of her favorite fabric lines! Looking forward to Block #2!
P.S. I am watching all of your podcasts from #1 while sewing and am enjoying getting caught up in all of them. You and Chelsi are great company!
