Hello! Today I'm excited to share a super fast and easy free Layer Cake quilt pattern from the Fat Quarter Shop!
I think most quilters love to give quilts as much as they like to make them, and this pattern is perfect for gifting...so fast and fun! All you need to get started is two layer cakes and a border fabric! Since I was working on this project in July I
decided to make it one of my Christmas in July projects and used Holly's Tree Farm by Sweetwater for Moda. I decided
on the fun recipe print from The Cookie Exchange collection for my
border.(another, more recent Christmas group by Sweetwater).
Before sewing, you'll need to divide your fabrics into lights and darks...
The dark fabrics get trimmed to size for the large blocks, and the light fabrics are pieced into scrappy 4-patches!
I did all of my cutting and 4-patch sewing in just a short time one evening.
Then the fun really begins as you set the quilt together by alternating large and 4-patch blocks.
With such a simple pattern this is the perfect opportunity to use large prints, plaids, florals and novelty fabrics. I couldn't think of a better way to use these fun Christmas prints!
At first I worried a bit about using such a busy fabric for my border, but with all of the scrappy 4-patch blocks it seemed a natural choice to use a scrappy border fabric!
After I added the border I was even more happy with my choice! I do think I'll bind this with a red from either Holly's Tree Farm or The Cookie Exchange to tie it all together.
I can hardly wait to get this one quilted. It really was fun sewing with Christmas fabrics in the heat we've been having too. I think it gave me a little hope for cooler temperatures!
Kimberly has a You Tube video for this quilt with all of the details and you can

Happy Quilting! Thanks so much for stopping by!
