Pear Block Wall Hanging

This weekend I got a chance to finish up a little wall hanging using some scrap blocks left over from this fall when I pieced the "Canned Pears" quilt sample for  market (pattern by Fig Tree & Company).

I had three left over blocks from piecing the quilt, and I had other bits and pieces of the coordinating fabrics which were perfect for a couple of borders and binding. The fabrics are all from Mirabelle by Fig Tree & Company which will be in stores soon.

I've been making quite a few mini quilts lately, and I thought I'd share how I'm making simple pockets for the backs of my quilts in order to hang them. I take two charm squares (or sometimes a bit smaller square, say 4" x 4") and fold them in half on the diagonal, wrong sides together. I then baste one folded square to each of the two top corners of my mini quilt--matching raw edges and using a 1/8" seam. After I attach my binding, the raw edges of the folded squares are enclosed by my binding, and I can insert a dowel along the back side of the quilt. I then rest the dowel on two small nails to hang the mini quilt.

I know I shared my small "S" quilt the other day, but I'm sharing it again just as a reminder that the "Spell it with Moda" blog tour is still going on! All of the free alphabet patterns can be made with 2 1/2" strips or from Jelly Roll strips.

Did I mention I used that adorable April Showers umbrella print for the back of the "S" quilt?

Oh, and I'm posting over at the Moda Cutting Table today with some fun ideas for your Jelly Roll Strips. Thanks so much for stopping by!

PS C&T shared a sneak peek of my next book, Fresh Family Traditions, on their blog here...it's getting close to arrival!

The pear wallhanging is so stunning! I love colors and the quilting - so simple, but so impressive. I am thinking about the quilting thread you use - white? Other color? Great work!

How fun to learn that you pieced the pear quilt: I saw it at PIQF in the fall at Joanna's booth, and had to buy the kit! You did a beautiful job on it! Beautiful table runner too!! Can't wait to see your new book too!!! Hugs, H in Healdsburg

I love the quilting on both the "S" and the canned pears mini! Is it a special stitch on your machine! Or do you FMQ the waviness? (I'm sorry if you have blogged about this before...)

Wonderful work Sherri! Maybe this is the real reason I stopped reading blogs--I feel like an unaccomplished hack! Thanks so much for the dowel hanging tip for the mini quilts. Def a good idea. Think I'll go pin that idea right now! ;-)

That's a very clever idea to hang a small quilt. Your ideas on how to use jelly rolls were great tips.

Sherri, what a brilliant way to create a pocket for hanging a quilt. I'm definitely going to do this. I love to see what you've created and read your blog nearly every day. Thanks for sharing your love of sewing and quilting with all of us!

Thank you for the tip for hanging triangles instead of a hanging sleeve! This was really useful! I only hope that next time I'll remember your wonderful idea.
