Hello, friends! Today I’m sharing a Village House Quilt Update! And I’m actually able to share that these blocks are now set together into a quilt top and are ready for the quilter. Keep reading for all of the details about my recent progress on one of my oldest projects!

Village House Quilt Update
2018: Beginnings
Back in January of 2018 I finally decided to start making the Village quilt by Carrie Nelson. She had designed the project using charm packs from a variety of different designer collections, and I immediately loved that quilt! I decided to make my version using just Sherri & Chelsi collections. I knew this was going to be a long-term work in progress from the beginning because I wanted a truly scrappy quilt. (Over the years, this pattern became a free offering from Moda).
Progress
Each time we got a new fabric collection I worked on making several new houses. I also went back and made sure that I used fabrics from each collection we had designed before I started my quilt. There were a couple of times I made groups of houses that were sized incorrectly. But I kept on going! Also, about midway through my process we changed the background color we used with collections going forward. So, some of my houses have off-white roof backgrounds, and the newer houses have a lighter creamy white roof background.
Finishing Decisions
As my collection of houses grew, I actually didn’t want to finish–I loved seeing the mix of prints from a variety of different collections and how beautifully they made this in-progress scrap project shine. But a few weeks ago, I decided that with 21 collections represented it was time to finish this one up. (Plus, it was either that or make the quilt larger than the pattern).
From Scrappy House Blocks to Quilt Top
Along with deciding to finish I also had to decide on a fabric/fabrics for the sashing used between some of the houses. There are 12 houses in each row. Some are sewn together without sashing, while others are sewn together using sashing of different widths. The pattern design is really genius so that the rows end up the same size but have a variety of different configurations. I finally decided on using the tone-on-tone leaf print from our Emma collection for sashing and the outer border. I loved the effect of leaves floating around all of the houses.
I’m working on getting this one off to the quilter as soon as I can. In the meantime, I’m trying to figure out if I want to make a scrappy binding or use just one fabric. Then, I’ll be sharing photos of the finished quilt once it’s quilted and bound.
Thanks so much for stopping by for this update post. Happy quilting!

Whatever happened to Carrie Nelson at Moda? Has she retired? That’s not a name you see around much anymore…

This quilt has been on my “to do” list for years, and I have been gathering fabric to use in the blocks all along. Other demands kept getting in my way. Your finish has inspired me to finally get started. I’m planning to make a smaller wall hanging size to fit the wall in my entryway. Thanks for sharing your progress!

Over the weekend I bought some background fabric. My plan is to make this quilt at an upcoming retreat. I love your creativity in using several different lines of your fabric. Looking forward to seeing your finished quilt; I’m sure it’ll be wonderful.
And, yes, whatever happened to Carrie Nelson?!

This is turning into a very beautiful quilt. As always, I really like the way you use all the different fabrics. I am looking forward to seeing the finished quilt in the very near future.
