Welcome! Today is my day for Monique’s blog hop for her new book Traditional Fat Quarter Quilts: 11 Traditional Quilt Projects from Open Gate (Quiltmakers Club)
! I’m excited to share my project with you today! The quilt I’m highlighting today is Canasta…I immediately fell in love with the block design, but I chose this quilt for another reason as well. I have such fond memories of playing Canasta nearly every day one summer with a great-great Aunt who had come to visit for several months!
Canasta is made up of simple blocks that consist of 4 flying geese, 4 four-patch blocks, and a center 9-patch. The hardest part for me was choosing fabric! (I finally decided on Heirloom by Joel Dewberry).Monique’s books are clear and easy to follow. She gives instructions if you are using her Fit to be Geese ruler as well as instructions for those who want to make the flying geese blocks the traditional way.
When I started I had decided to make 4 blocks and make a pillow top. But then I thought it might be fun to make a runner for spring with these gorgeous fabrics!

My favorite cleaning tip–not just for Spring, though–is one I recently picked up via Pinterest. Keep dryer sheets after they've been used in the dryer and repurpose them as glass cleaner for shower stall doors. They're great for getting into the pebbly/uneven surfaces to wipe away soap build up!

Love, love, love this block! And your fabrics are beautiful. Spring cleaning is usually triggered when spring finally arrives. Here is South Dakota that could be anywhere from March to late May. And like some of your other readers, my favorite thing to get done is washing windows.

When doing spring cleaning, I have to make sure I set the timer so I stop to eat lunch. I hate cleaning, but once I start I can't stop. Also, I need to make sure that I drink plenty of water since I usually get hot.

I love your runner! This is a great pattern and I have to say the name Canasta took me back to my childhood. My mom & dad played Canasta all the time with other couples in our 1960's tract home neighborhood — good memories!

I saw that pattern when I flipped through the book and I thought the same thing! I loved the block but I also have great memories of playing Canasta with my grandma! Your blocks are beautiful!
My car takes a beating during the winter and my Spring cleaning tip is for my car. I spray some windex on a paper towel and wipe down my car seats. It gets dog hair right off and freshens up the upholstery also. Windex also gets spots out of the carpet. (a tip I learned from an antique dealer who used it to remove spots on antique rugs)!

Well my favorite tip would be to wait til fall to deep clean and just quilt this spring! :O) But, seriously, I do love it when the windows sparkle! Starting with the windows and then go room by room as I can get to it. Love the runner you made – great idea to try new blocks! Her book looks great and I love her flying geese ruler! My favorite spring cleaning tip is how to get the pollen gunk off of cars. Spray an area of the car with green soap and let it sit there a few minutes. Power wash and off comes the gunk! Continue until you can once again see the car's paint color! 🙂

I love mopping my floors with Murphy's Oil Soap and washing the windows with vinegar. Everything smells so fresh and it reminds me of home when I was a youngster.

Love this block! As soon as the weather starts getting warmer, I open my windows. Everything seems better with fresh air moving through the house. Gives me an extra incentive to do big cleaning.

Well I use baking soda for everything. It's great at getting "stuck on things" off without ruining the surface. It's great for whitening too. I use it on my kitchen cabinets if they start to look discolored.

My best Spring cleaning tip? Just keep the house up all year so you don't have such a large job to do in the spring. Then when the weather is nice, open the windows and enjoy!
I love the fabrics you have chosen for your project. It seems like designers are moving back to white backgrounds rather than the ecru that was so prevalent for so long. They look so nice and crisp and clean!

Hydrogen Peroxide and baking soda, applied for about 5minutes and then scrubbed out, will remove almost any stain from carpet. I've even used it on graphite and almost, almost, you can't tell there was ever an issue.

My favorite Spring cleaning tip would be to do one room at a time and get it done before going on to the next. Once one room is done and sparkling clean it will give the energy to do the rest. Plus, clear stuff out. If you don't use it then get rid of it to declutter each room as you go. Once you have made the decision to toss/donate something, don't look back. Don't look through that box/bag again or you'll start pulling things back out again; just let them go on your first instinct without second guessing your decision.

I don't think I have ever done a real spring clean, but the one piece of advice comes from my mother: don't forget to dust the mopboards! Most newer homes no longer have mop boards; instead there is trim along the floor where it meets the wall. And I have always kept the trim dusted!

I love that these are called Canasta! This past fall, three friends and I started gathering once a week (or so) to play Canasta. A little social time while the kids are in school.
First thing to do, take down the curtains and get them right in the wash. Hang all the lace and sheers right from the washer. They lose some of that good clean smell in the dryer.

Love that block and how you put it together for a wonderful table runner. My best spring cleaning tip is to get my husband to help. He moves the heavy furniture and vacuums under it, washes the outside of the windows and cleans the porch furniture. Sharing the chores is so much better than doing it alone.

Spring cleaning tip – enlist your husband to climb the ladder and help with the plant ledges, ceiling fans, etc. This year his idea was to take out the fake plants and just spray them down with a shower from the hose. Worked great, looks great, and takes far less time than the leaf by leaf approach.

I might be strange but I love spring cleaning, I carry around all my cleaning supplies in a basket with cloths, cleaning products altogether so as I move from room to room it is all there. Then I play loud msuic as I move from room to room.

When my ovens are set to self-clean the racks need to be removed. Rather than spend a few hours cleaning the 6 racks using lots of elbow grease, I put the racks in a large garbage bag. I spray into the bag with oven cleaner coating the racks generously with the cleaner. I then close the bag tightly, wait a couple of hours and then can just rinse off the dirt.

I wish I had a great tip. Around here the pollen is so bad we can't open windows or we dust even more. Also we wait for pollen to settle for season and then power spray down the whole exterior of the house. It amazes me to see just how much settles in the red brick. My home is for sale so I must keep it real tidy every flipping day as is. This looks to be a very fun book!

My most useful tip is to concentrate on one room at a time. If there are things that need to be moved to another part of the house, I just put it outside the doorway until I'm done so I don't waste time wandering around the house and get distracted!

For some reason I actually do 'autumn' cleaning. I've noticed that, for some reason, I tend to clean in the fall. I've tried spring cleaning, but it rarely happens. When I do a reorganization of the studio I always do the deep cleaning of mutant dust bunnies! (they are attracted to stray threads and bits of fabric you know)
Seriously though, I like using old washcloths with those Swiffer type mops to clean corners, ceilings, and ceiling fans. They wash up easy and don't waste as much as paper towels do. That is my only tip I can come up with!

My favorite spring cleaning tip is to spread your cleaning out over a week or so and set aside time each day for ONE room. I find focusing on one room at a time makes me feel less over whelmed!
And don't forget to go into each room with two trash bags. One for trash and one for goodwill!

Not really a tip, but more a personal tradition. I throw open all the windows and let the fresh air in through the house. After a long Iowa winter the air seems 'stale'.
That is a cool block pattern. Allows some flexibility in quilt size.

My tip for spring cleaning would be to get HELP!!! 🙂 Include the whole family in this big job! We crank up the music (I have teenagers so it has to be LOUD) and go crazy cleaning as much as you can all in one day! Then we order pizza and chill the rest of the night! Just do one thing a day. Yesterday I took all the globes off the ceiling fans, bathroom lights,kitchen etc and put them in the dishwasher on china cycle. It did take 3 loads but that gave me plenty of time to clean the fans and the rest. Also I find "soft " socks are the best dusters for everything from wood shades to furniture. Cheap and easy to wash.

Spring cleaning? Hmmm, I would have to say get out the vacuum attachments and really use them on forgotten spots, like under the bed, louvered doors, ceiling fans, etc. The dust bunnies don't stand a chance!

I love the blocks you made! Great color combo. I hate cleaning, but to make it easier I have everything I need in a bucket – gloves, sponges, wipes, etc. This makes it easy to find and inventory if I am out of something. Also, I do bathrooms first…since they're used most often I get to appreciate the fruits of my labor right away 🙂

I make a list (I am a huge list maker!) and after checking off 5 things I allow myself 1 hr in the sewing room! really helps to reward yourself!

Every sampling from the book has been a treat! As to the spring cleaning… My best tip to anyone that asks… Get a good cleaning lady. I love my Cleaning Lady. She makes sure that when I get home from work, I can actually do some quilting vs thinking about the cleaning. I love her visits!

Spring cleaning tip – get someone else to do it. Truly, though, if you can get helpers, the work isn't so tiresome and does get done more quickly. Another tip – start early and do a room or a project a week, then let it go for a week and start up again a week later (this one takes discipline). Your table runner looks great and I will be looking forward to see the completed project.

I love a room that's been cleaned from top to bottom and sparkles. I try not to kill myself getting it there and break it up over several days, or I do one cleaning step in multiple rooms. Today floors, tomorrow windows, then light fixtures etc. Thanks for offering the giveaway.

Don't be afraid to find a large garbage bag and be ruthless about things that are not being used- I worked in one small area not long ago was able to get rid lots of stuff that was no longer useful and taking up space.

My fav cleaning tip, spring or anytime, is using my Norwex microfibre cloth to clean windows. I use a water dampened cloth to wipe the window then polish with the dry Norwex….I was really skeptical about buying one of these cloths as they are a ridiculous price…but I wouldn't be without it now for windows, mirrors, chrome etc. No smelly spray cleaners that leave me gasping!
Love the colours in your new quilt – saw a lot of that yellow at the LQS the other day!

I love your blocks. My favorite Spring cleaning tip is to hire a company to do it for you. No, seriously I never have to Spring clean because I have this system that I have used, and had my Au Pairs use when my children were young, whereby one kitchen cupboard gets cleaned out each week, everything gets cleaned on specific days and each room gets Spring cleaned every week. Works for me. Thanks for the opportunity of wining this book.

My favorite tip is to get together with my sisters (I have three with one in Florida it's not easy getting together) and doing one house one Saturday and then on to the next the following. Work gets done and you get to have fun. End it with a great lunch or a shopping trip!

A non spring cleaning tip, maybe not even a cleaning tip but I heard once that you need to make your bed every day. Then, every time you see it you will feel good because it is proof you accomplished something that day. I make my bed as I'm brushing my teeth each morning. Help's me remember to both brush and make the bed. Thanks, love the blocks.

A spring cleaning tip from me??? Wow, that's a tough one. Hmmmm…..Try to do 15 minutes a day instead of one long bout of cleaning. Much easier to maintain. 🙂

Blocks are amazing, love those fabrics,beautiful springlike colours. My tip is to mix citrus essential oils with bicarbonated soda in a plastic bag, leave for a day to mingle and sprinkle over carpet to make it smell fresh. I also add essential oils to water when using an E cloth

My tip is to not do everything at one time. Space it out so it won't seem like such a chore. I always clean one room a day, cleaning it from top to bottom and washing all the things I can as I go.

My key to spring cleaning is to first place a big box near the door that goes to our garage. Then, as I tackle each area of the house, things that we no longer use or need go into the box. Once the box is full, it goes to Goodwill.
The second key is to NOT ask hubby whether he thinks something should go into the box! LOL!
