Happy Friday! Today is Summer Sampler Block day, and today I’m sharing one of my favorite vintage-style star blocks. After this block there will just be one more, and then it will be time for everyone to share their quilts!
If you’re new to my blog, you can find links to all of the previous Summer
Sampler block posts at the end of this post.
First, gather your fabrics. You might notice in the photo below that I don’t have all of the red fabrics pictured that appear in my block…I decided after I took the photos to make the red block really scrappy…
Note: fabrics for two blocks are pictured below.
From Fabric A:
- 4 squares 1 ¾″ x 1 ¾″
- 4 squares 2 ¼″ x 2 ¼″ for half-square triangles (or if you are making your block scrappy like my red version, you’ll need 1 square in each size of 4 different prints).
From Fabric B:
- 1 square 1 ½″ x 1 ½″
From Background:
- 4 squares 2 ¼″ x 2 ¼″ for half-square triangles
- 4 squares 1 ¾″ x 1 ¾″
- 4 rectangles 1 ½″ x 3″
Use this method to make eight half-square triangles for each block. Trim the half-square triangles to measure 1 ¾″ x 1 ¾″.
Next, assemble the star points using two half-square triangles, one background square 1 ¾″ x 1 ¾″ and one print square 1 ¾″ x 1 ¾″. Press seams toward the squares. You can flip the center seam to make your block extra flat.
Make four star point sections for each block. At this point these sections should measure 3″ x 3″.
Next, lay out your block pieces as shown below. Sew each row together, pressing toward the background rectangles.
And there you have it…another fun star block for your Summer Sampler quilt!
I love seeing these blocks all together as each new pair is added…

What a nice block. Since I haven't been doing these blocks I am curious as to the size. It would be lovely if it were a 6' block as I need to make a few to finish a little quilt.
