Happy Wednesday! My red and white Moda Building Blocks quilt is quilted, home, and bound! It has been such a fun journey to work on this quilt. I began it in the fall of 2014 knowing it was going to be a bit of a long-term project. It’s a little bit sad to have this finished, I so loved working on it!
I will warn you there are a lot of photos on this post!
You can find the Moda Building Blocks quilt pattern here. The quilt finishes up at 84″ x 96″ and is made from all Moda reds, whites, and off white prints from my stash. I’ve had some of these fabrics for several years!
I went back and forth with a few different ideas for the binding. In the end I went with the Moda Bella Christmas Red 9900 16. I’m really happy with that choice as it sets off the quilt beautifully.
The incredible machine quilting was done by Natalia Bonner of Piece N Quilt. (She has posted about her quilting here). I just love how she used so many different quilting designs and techniques in the different areas of the quilt.
I have so many favorite blocks in this quilt that it’s impossible to choose just one favorite.
The blocks range in size from small 6″ blocks which were a lot of fun to larger 36″ blocks which are just stunning in this quilt!
Love these straight lines and the feathers!!!
This block above was supposed to be made with just a couple of fabrics…but I love it made with several different ones.
I didn’t buy any extra fabric for this quilt until the very end. I made one of the largest blocks last and needed to get ½ yard of one of the prints…other than that it was completely from my scraps and my stash!
I love the swirls and bubbles…
And I also love the straight lines and angled lines!
I used a Moda Bella in white on the back, and I’m super happy I went with that, too. I love being able to see all of the quilting on the back…and it was sure fun to look at the back while I was hand stitching the binding!
Thanks so much for following along on this journey. It’s been too sunny outside to get a good picture of the whole quilt…but we’re supposed to have some cloudy days soon, and I’ll update this post with one more photo of the full quilt…I’ll let you know when I do that!
Thanks so much for stopping by!

Absolutely stunning; I love two-color quilts! All the thread on the back is white; did the quilter use white or red thread in the red fabrics on the topside?

I agree- this quilt is a stunner! Red and white quilts are classic for a reason! Also, the quilting is beautiful. Quick question: did you pre-wash all of your fabric, or use something like Color Catchers after it was completed? I'm asking because a R&W quilt is on my list, but I'm terrified of bleeding.

Every time you look at it, you'll be drawn in. My current lap quilt is like that, every block is quilted and pieced in different patterns and I really enjoy looking at it more closely every day! It's wonderful!

That is just amazing Sherri!! I love all the choices you made with the fabrics: they all just seem to be perfect in their placement and the all over balance in the quilt. And the quilting is just so wonderful also. That will be great to have out at Christmas and Valentines Day. And I'm sure it will be out quite a bit right now too! 🙂 Have a great weekend!! Hugs, H

Hi Sherri, I must say I'm not normally a fan of the colour red. But seeing your quilt has changed my mind! It is stunning and warms the cockles of my heart or in other words it's so satisfying! I also love your changes in fabrics and the level of density, differing designs and tonal changes. In essence it is wonderful, wonderful!
Perhaps soon we all will have a chance to see your quilt in whole!

Just gorgeous! I love quilts that use a variety of blocks. So much fun to just sit and look at all the different patterns. The red and white is perfect. Just ordered the pattern so that I can have a try at this one. I don't have a big enough stash of just two colors to make this quilt, but I'm willing to go fabric shopping….it's tough but someone's got to do it, right?! 🙂

I love it. I've considered making a Building Blocks quilt too but hadn't considered making a two colored one. I may have to rethink the idea now.
