Happy Tuesday! Today I’m participating in the Summer Sew Along for my friend Annie who is celebrating her new pattern, the “Stash and Dash.” Annie is a wonderful pattern designer as well as the creator of the Soft & Stable product which is a terrific stabilizer for bags big and small. The Stash and Dash is a fun bag pattern that is available free for a short time (I’ll have all of the details at the end of this post).
I had actually been looking to make something like this for a little while, so I was excited there was a free pattern available. Annie sent me a finishing kit for my project, and she will give a finishing kit to one of my readers as well.
First I cut out all of my pieces. I used some Fig Tree pieces from a couple of different collections (I’ve been making all of my travel cases out of Fig Tree lately so everything will eventually coordinate).
Annie’s finishing kit comes with the Soft And Stable, the vinyl for the exterior pocket, the mesh for the three interior pockets, the double-pull handbag zipper and extra zipper pull, the webbing for the strap, and the slider.
The pattern is well written, but what’s even better is that Annie has step by step tutorials for each step of the bag making process. Some of her tutorials even link to short videos which will make everything clear even if you’ve never made a bag or installed a zipper before.
This was actually my first time sewing with the mesh webbing, so I was a little nervous, but Annie’s tips were useful, and it went fine.
There are many different possibilities for ways to use this bag. Just as a point of reference, I added 8 Aurifloss spools into the middle pocket. This would make a great storage bag for embroidery or English Paper Piecing. It would also make a terrific sewing kit, and a great travel case for cords or jewelry. When I make my next one I plan to make the bottom pocket with fabric instead of mesh.
The outside of the case has a clear vinyl pocket…just another additional feature that gives you even more options.
I did just a few lines of quilting
on my case…with Soft & Stable you don’t need very much
quilting…it actually adheres to your fabric very well even without
quilting.
There was really only one time I strayed from Annie’s pattern. I like to add Shape Flex interfacing to the wrong side of my strap fabric before making the covering for the strap webbing. It just adds a better finish to my straps and makes them even more durable. Other than this small step, I followed her pattern exactly.
The pattern is free from now until October 1st. You can download it here (scroll down to the bottom until you see the download button). Once you’ve downloaded the pattern, go here for the full schedule of Annie’s posts and tutorials for this pattern.
I’ve actually made several of Annie’s other patterns. Here are links to my blog posts about a few of them:
Finally…Annie has a finishing kit for one of my readers–just leave a comment on this post mentioning your “must do” activity before summer comes to an end…I’ll pick a winner tomorrow. Thanks so much for stopping by!

You would think that I invented S oft and Stable, the way I promote it to me friends and students. I teach bag and quilt classes and since my LQS won't order s&s I buy it, cut it to the appropriate size for the project and include it in the price of the class. Once they use it, my students are sold and start ordering it from Annie! I would love to win this finishing kit because I've never used the double opening zipper before! Love your FT version – tempted to copy! Your blog is top of my bookmarked blogs list! Love it.

This bag is gorgeous! I plan to make one for my english paper piecing. I have a grandmother's flower garden that has been in progress for years.
I have to finish a quilt for my DH. His birthday is in October and must be ready then.
