Hello and happy Valentine’s Day! Today is the year anniversary of the release of the first free Splendid Sampler block pattern. Now that all of the patterns have been released, we are gearing up for the release of the finished book which will include all of the patterns!
I mentioned the other day that I was able to sew together my Splendid Sampler
blocks last week while I attended a quilt retreat! Here are a few more photos and close ups. I’m really happy with how this quilt turned out.
I was able to piece all of the blocks, and add sashings, posts, and side and corner setting triangles all from my scraps and stash.
I did run to the store yesterday and purchase a Chestnut Street floral for the outer border. I can’t wait to put it all together!
This quilt just makes me smile…not to mention it really reminds me of spring which is just around the corner.
There will be some fun giveaways going on today…visit the Splendid Sampler home page to enter the main giveaway (three winners…one from the US, one from Australia, and one from another country). There are also a lot of Splendid Sampler block designers (including me) hosting individual giveaways today. Leave a comment below on what you find most inspiring about the Splendid Sampler blocks and quilt along, and I’ll send some quilty goodies to one commenter. Giveaway open until Tuesday, February 21st.
Thanks so much for stopping by!
Patty D from NC says
I really enjoyed the sampler and finished piecing my quilt top last night. The fact that each block was so different and I learned some new skills made this a fun QAL.
Sarah says
This has been a great skill builder, as well as encouraged me to try different style blocks. I always tend to go for the same 'look,' so following along with the Splendid Sampler has challenged me. 🙂 (not finished yet, though)
Janet says
I guess what I find most inspiring is that you've got that top all done and together! Now I want one. Been collecting Fig Tree scrap bags and may have enough! Thanks for the opportunity!
piecrust says
What I love most is the variety. Any choice of fabric and any skill level could make these blocks work.
Joyce Carter says
I really, really love your top. I can't wait to finish mine. I have been inspired by all the different blocks and techniques in this sew-a-long. I have learned some new things and found out that I didn't like doing some of them—like paper piecing. It has been a wonderful experience. Thank you for the giveaway.

I loved that there were quilters from all over the world! Made the world a smaller place for me! I feel like I found friends from many new places.
shannon miller says
Splendid sampler inspired me more than I can express. It allowed me to go out of my comfort zone time and time again to try new methods, which has been able to make me much more comfortable with those methods. I absolutely loved seeing so many different interpretations of the same block from all over the world. I am so sad it's over – twice a week for a year I would look up the new block first thing while having coffee and decide how best to tackle it and plan my fabrics. I'll really miss it.
cynthia says
I enjoyed the incredible variety of designs.
Mary on Lake Pulaski says
The thing I like most is seeing how blocks for so many designers using so many quitt methods look amazing together.

C Murphy says
Being new to quilting this really made me step outside my comfort zone and try something new although quite scary! I didn't finish yet but I'm determined to do so! Thanks for the lessons!

The thing I find most interesting, is how each participant's blocks look different, based on the fabrics they've selected. It'll be fun to see how people finish their blocks – the setting, borders, etc.
Quilter says
My inspiration was a desire to try new techniques. I usually make quilts with straight line sewing–log cabins, t-shirt quilts etc. But after doing The Splendid Sampler I know I can try any technique and accomplish it!
Caro says
It's so interesting to see the variation in 100 (or is it 99?) different blocks. And they all look wonderful together as well.
Aurea says
Hi. This was the best experience. Although I have been quilting many years this made me realize here is still a lot to learn and improve upon. I still have 25 blocks to make but determined to get all of them done. Thank you.

Most definitely it is/was the variety of blocks offered in the Splendid Sampler! So many techniques were highlighted and how to use them to show off the blocks. I enjoyed seeing each one and stowing away the instructions to use when I can. They are all beauties!
Janet Ward says
Sherri I think your quilt, it's blocks and the fabric that you used are simply fantastic!! What I have found to be so inspiring to me, is just that… thousands of quilters bound by a common thread Coming together to work on and do the same project is phenomenal, to see how each person's personality effects their choice of fabric, arrangement, and even how they interpreted each block was amazing! I fell in love with the whole shabang…. I have been able to do more precise piecing than ever before! I'm more relaxed in front of my machine and the amount of patience to work on blocks taking my time has vastly improved my overall ability to make a better project. The Splendid Sampler has definitely been a game changer for me, in the quilting world… and for that I'm grateful. It has been a wonderful journey as a Splenderette! Thank you for your coverage about the Sampler.

I think the thing that inspired me most about the splendid sampler was that it made me get out of my comfort zone. Trying different techniques and using them together in the same quilt are things I don't usually do. I love piecing and usually stick with that. The applique, paper piecing and embroidery really offered challenges that I don't normally attempt.

I think the most inspiring thing for me was how so many people came together for this quilt along. Designers and quilters from all around the globe focusing on one block or the next to come out. I think with the next QAL, we should have one positive word or thought that we all focus on for each week while we are making our block. It couldn't hurt, right?
Sharon McClurg says
I enjoyed all the creativity from around the world – Many beautiful blocks were so inspiring. (I'm still working on my blocks – got sidetracked by "life"…)
Kellie Warren says
I am not completely finished with mine due to multiple hospital stays because of lupus, but I had never done any embroidery at alleast whatsoever, so this terrified me. Add to that the fact that I started out behind and was constantly behind. But, i found a couple of friends in the group early that we messaged back and forth often for encouragement and questions and answers and sometimes just for giggles. This was the most inspiring thing to. I had decided to quit doing this project twice, but was nudged along by buddies. I will get it finished soon enough and I love the work I have done just as much as all my other quilts but this one means more because it was during such a trying time and I had sone much encouragement.
ckrut says
I love your top! So light and airy. Printed out most of the blocks, but never could decide on what fabric to use. Lame excuse I know! Now that I see everyone's completed, I think I'm just going to jump in and do it.
Donna Pfost says
This has been a journey for me!! It started out fast and then slowed down somewhere near the middle….I am still working on this and I have loved every minute of it. The English Paper Piecing was new for me…and quite a challenge for my mildly arthritic fingers. I was also reintroduced to foundation paper piecing, and I loved it as much as I remember. The thing that really was fun, though, was returning to embroidery!! My mother taught me to embroider when I was a little girl….probably about 7-8 years old. It was so fun doing the blocks as they brought back precious memories for me. Sadly, I lost my Mom in September two days before what would have been her 92nd birthday. So, now I am in catch-up mode….and enjoying every minute!! Thanks for this wonderful experience!! Its been a hoot!! 🙂 <3

so many new skills learned was awesome for me

This quilt is like a smorgasbord (not sure this is spelled correctly) spread out in front of us, waiting to be picked up and taken to the sewing machine. Love it, even though I'm not caught up.
Karen says
What inspired me was the commitment to detail. I sew by the seat of my pants. This forced me to slow down, be precise and pay attention. One of my paper pieced blocks just didn't work. After trying twice, I went back and realized the printing size was off!! Frustrating….but oh so, gratifying to see the block finally come together. Thanks for a fun ride!

Oh my gosh! I just learned sooooo much! I have been quilting – piecing, really, for about 25 years, but this sampler took me way out of my comfort zone and introduced me to so many different techniques. And that's not even touching on the fabulous designs we got to work with!! I'm not done yet (just finished block #80), but I should be finishing it yet this month. And since I didn't start until March, I'm going to pat myself on the back for sticking with it!! Such a fun quilting adventure!!
Jan Taylor says
Sheri,
Every time you showed pictures of your blocks, it made me want to finish mine too. The reason this quilt means so much to me is that so many people were involved in this project. With our world seeming so torn apart right now, it was nice to feel part of a loving community. What a wonderful experience. BTY your quilt turned out fabulous! Hugs, Jan
Cheryl says
Thanks for the opportunity to undertake such vast techniques, and improve my abilities & that amazingly give this sampler a unique look. All designers involved have done a fantastic job and should all be so proud of their contributions….now to finish mine as I only stumbled across this a couple of months ago. It has also been interesting looking at other completed blocks using varied colour combinations and how vastly different a block can look. Again thank you for the challenges….? Cheryl (Aussie)

I found myself looking forward each week to release days, then I couldn't wait to get home and start the block. Some were well within my comfort zone and easy, others were a challenge, and some I had to alter to fit my current abilities. What a great experience, I was so happy to part of the fun.

I really enjoyed following all with everyone's blocks. It was so educational to see how people chose different colorways to emphasize some part of the design. Some blocks seemed drab to me, until I saw them in place with the rest of that collection and then it just seemed right. I also learned that the final sashing and layout can make such a difference as well. It's been a great year. Thanks for the opportunity to win.

I have loved sewing along. Although I have not kept up through the year I almost am half way there. I love that I tried at least two new things, paper piecing (I really love this) and a little free motion quilting, I have a long way to go with that one. It has been a fun year and I plan on continuing on until I have enough blocks for a twin size quilt.
Coffeebean's Dailies says

I loved being part of a world wide sisterhood of quilters. The quilters themselves inspired me with their choice of color and fabric. I liked that some blocks challenged me to try a technique that I was not familiar with. I feel that my attention to detail has improved along with accuracy of cutting and sewing. Thanks to the Splendid Sampler team, it was a fun year of surprises. Now to finish all the blocks and the quilt!
rebecca says
So far I have not been able to start the Splendid Sampler but I just recently retired and hope to start soon. I am anxious to learn paper piecing and I love small blocks! Sampler quilts just really interest me. Thank you.

I want it! I enjoyed a lot all the journey, including the doubts, questions and answers from quilters all over the world, including all amazing pictures, all the lessons that we had learned, we all became hings and queens of small tiny pieces of fabric! Even if I decided that I will not complete my 100 blocks right now, I'm very happy with my 60 something, and will finish the quilt probably with a 8×8 grid. Thanks all for our splendid journey!

I loved that there were so many different techniques. Some were very challenging and some were not. This has been fun and I will miss it.
zolaquilts says
While it's been said already that there were so many techniques, I would comment that it almost felt like there were different mediums from which I drew. There were combinations of applique and embroidery, crochet lace giving texture…and the whimsical factor of the level of creativity. Aside from my personal preferences influencing me, some blocks sparkled with creativity while there was the occasional block giving me cause to wonder if the dedicated creator struggled for inspiration! This actually made the whole montage even better for me, and I've truly enjoyed the process.

The most inspiring part of The Splendid Sampler is not the designer's blocks, although they are, each and every one, terrific. The most inspiring part is the Facebook page–seeing the beautiful blocks quilters around the world have created and feeling such support from someone you haven't met (and might never meet).

The most inspiring thing about this project? What a difficult question….the creativity and inspiration from such an amazing collection of designers, the fun and challenge of the variety of the blocks (such neat tiny blocks), the joy and happiness of all of the participants, the thrill of challenging ourselves to step out of our comfort zones, learning new skills and techniques. At the very beginning there was a Bee Brave block. That block inspired me to try the many new techniques from the different designers. There is usually more than one way to do things and I've learned that the way I've always done it is not always the easiest or best.

While I haven't finished my blocks (or even close), I will continue to work on them, and eventually have a Splendid Quilt of my own!

I am so inspired by the variety of techniques! I too am loving the many "new to me" designers & shops I've encountered during the Splendid Sampler. I'm finding that my horizons of quilt styles I enjoy has expanded. I never thought I would like any kind of sampler or non-symmetrical quilt. My first quilt was a class quilt with 9 blocks to learn different general techniques and set 3×3. I loved the fabrics then & love them even more now. It took me about 4 years to finish it because I was not into the sampler style. This journey has opened my eyes to ways to tie the sampler together so it doesn't look so random. Now my first "real" quilt looks great in our living room! I'm so glad to be on this awesome journey with quilters from all over the world & from various stages in the quilting experience.
Sandy Long says
I just find all of the diversity in color and methods so inspiring. Every single person, from the designers to everyone who has posted their work has put such a different spin on each block. The possibilities are truly endless!

I remember sitting under my aunties' quilting frames when I was just a wee one. The laughter and chit-chat above going strong…The hands under the quilt and the needles flying through the fabric…it was magical. That is what the splendid sampler means to me…magic. True, I have learned many new techniques and bought alot (ahem) of new gadgets but, more than anything it has been the comradery of the project…true magic.

I found the variety of fabric choices and approaches to block designs most inspiring. Everyone's choices worked great. Fabric choice affects the "feel" of the quilt. I love how your fabric choices for your sampler make the quilt light and airy – Spring-like. My fabric choices produce a more formal look (I chose American Jane's "Lorraine" – very French.
