My scrappy trip around the world is a finished top! I LOVE this quilt. I had so much fun sewing the blocks together the other night. At first I was just going to sew a couple of rows, but you know how that goes…it really wasn’t taking that long so I decided to finish it up!
Here are blocks 29 – 32…the group above is one of my favorite sets.
And here are blocks 33-36!
The finished top takes up most of the sewing room floor! It measures 72 ½” x 72 ½” right now.
As I was setting the blocks and rows together I had fun looking at each and every fabric. Some of these fabrics have already been included in cherished quilts, some will shortly be used in projects, and others are ones that I’ve been afraid to cut into until now!
Now I have to decide what to use for backing. I don’t think I have anything on hand, so I want to buy the perfect fabric. I’m also still thinking about quilting this myself. If I do, it will be the biggest quilt I’ve quilted on my own, so I’m not sure. But this is definitely going to be one of those “wash for the crinkly look” and “use it all the time” quilts, so it will be okay if the quilting isn’t perfect!
The tutorial I used for this quilt can be found here:
Thanks so much for following along on the journey of this quilt! Have a wonderful day!

I think this is going to be on my list for one of my retreats! I love this quilt and have lots of scrap that I am trying to use up…3 quilts so far out of the scraps started, this way I can procrastinate on cutting my other fabrics.
It looks absolutely fabulous!

Your quilt is just lovely. I noticed that you have white(?) in the blocks and that it ends up making a great sashing. How did you manage to make sure the white would be in the right place? I've been wanting to make one of these quilts and I really like the way the white works to separate the blocks. Thanks.

What a very nice "happy" quilt and can see where you would want to use all the time. Great colors.

Just like the old days when quilts were made out of old shirts and dresses and were filled with memories. It turned out great. Have fun shopping for the backing.
Donna says
To keep with the "old" scrappy look you can get away with using unbleached muslin for backing. Congratulations of a great quilt.

It's delightful, Sherri. I love it! I can tell you had fun making this one. 🙂
Deb says
can you tell your audience how/if you dealt with the plethora of pressing seams/issues with this quilt?? YIKES~~~ i'm so frustrated~ like a bad nightmare~ it's almost taking the fun outta making the quilt. did you throw caution to the wind and "just go for it"? or, were you methodical and able to nest/butt your seams together? short of pressing every seam open, were you able to figure out a clear-cut process? there heve been SO many STATW quilts made/being made, and NO ONE has addressed or mentioned the pressing issue. is it just ME?? your quilt is lovely by the way! i love that you placed the white in the center of each block~ gives your quilt such a clean-fresh-cottage-y look! SO pretty!!! thanks for any help you could throw my way~~

Great job! It looks wonderful, and I love the few bits of dark fabric…they provide a lovely contrast. The awesome thing about a scrappy quilt is that you can use pretty much anything on the back, and the color will match.
To address Deb who commented above asking about pressing seams, I made a STATW quilt recently, and after I followed the pressing instructions for the strips, the blocks themselves lined up perfectly. However…when it came time to sew the blocks into rows/a top, it wasn't so easy. I really didn't want to re-press an entire quilt worth of blocks (nor did I want to press everything open),so I just laid out my blocks how I wanted them, then when sewing blocks into rows, I pinned my seams, making sure the seams on the bottom block(the one touching my machine bed) were going away from my machine, and the ones on the top block were going towards my machine. It made everything line up and nest properly. There were quite a few "twisted" seams, and a good deal of pinning, but I didn't find it hard to quilt through at all, and in the finished quilt, it is not noticeable.

Scrap-tacular!

I love this quilt!! It has a wonderfully warm and "sunggle under me now" look!! I was wondering, what direction did you press the seams: there are so many, was there a method that you found worked best to reduce bulk? Thanks!! H in Healdsburg

Your quilt blocks are beautiful! I am making this quilt for my granddaughter's high school graduation. It's scrappy with lots of reds (her favorite). She also loves monkeys. I bought the backing first…sock monkeys printed on a red background! Won't she be surprised?

I am no where near as accomplished a quilter as you are and Quilted mine on my own using only my little singer sewing machine ( I did mine the same size as you) and it all went great! The only sad part is I gave mine away as a bridal shower gift,,,what's fun is now I haveanotherexcuse to make another!
Go ahead youcando it!!!
Your quilt is beautiful by the way… I love how you used white as the diagonal marker in your quilt …I may consider that as it lends such a fun and fresh look !
