Hello and happy Friday! Today I’m happy to share the second block in my 2017 mystery block of the month quilt! I’m having a lot of fun piecing my blocks and deciding on the design elements I want to incorporate into the quilt and can’t wait to see some of the other blocks being made from these patterns.
This month’s block is a little more scrappy than the first one, but you can easily
make it less scrappy by using just two colors for your block.
Also, I’ve created downloadable PDF files for the blocks so you can download them each month from my blog. The link for this month’s pattern will be at the end of the post, and last month’s tutorial and download link can be found here.
Okay…here are the cutting directions for both sizes (6″ and 12″) for this month’s Scrappy Star block:
February: Scrappy Star
|
6” Block
|
12” Block
|
Fabric 1 (green in block)
|
(2) 2 ½” x 2 ½” Squares
|
(2) 4” x 4” Squares
|
Fabric 2 – 7 (shades of pink)
|
(1) 2 ½” x 2 ½” Squares
(6 total) |
(1) 4” x 4” Square (6
total) |
Background
|
(8) 2 ½” x 2 ½” Squares
|
(8) 4” x 4” Squares
|
The technique for this month’s block is simple…you’ll be making 16 half-square triangle blocks. Since I’m using the trim to size method, the blocks should be very accurate. I’ve pressed my seams open to eliminate bulk where the hst’s come together.
I used 6 different pink fabrics for my block; each fabric is repeated twice in the block.
For step by step instructions on making half-square triangles see my half-square triangle tutorial post.

Thanks so much for stopping by!

Thank you for sharing these block patterns. They will be great to incorporate in many projects. I am currently working on a new quilt project using Kate Spain's Aria collection. It's so much fun to see other's creativity in how to use the colors. Have a pleasant weekend.

Hi, love your posts and am looking forward to joining in your quilt along. Do you have an estimate of how much fabric will be needed altogether. Thanks Andrea

Hi Sherri,
I absolutely love your blog, which I only came across a couple of months ago. I've now read every post from 2008 to April 2015, as well as your recent posts.
I started making the 6" version of your BOM, but I'm confused by this month's instructions. If I trim the HSTs to 1 1/2 inches, or even 1 3/4 inches, the finished block will be too small.
Please let me know what I need to do.
Many thanks,
Chris

Chris, I too had the same problem. I was following the cutting measurements on the pdf download. Apparently the original pdf, which I downloaded the day the Feb block was posted, had incorrect cutting instructions for the small block. Wish this would have been called to our attention in a blog post. Wonder how many others will get frustrated.

We are all only human and mistakes we will make but all is well just try a sample out first before cutting your main fabric i have done that for sometime loving the blocks so far
