Hello! I’m excited to share a little about a couple of projects I made last fall for the Scrap Lab feature in Quilts and More magazine! Scrap Lab is a fun section in each issue detailing three different projects made by three different designers using the same fabrics. Designers are shown a photo of the fabrics and have to decide pretty quickly what to create…then each designer sets to work individually on the projects.
This was my first experience with Scrap Lab…I loved it and am really looking
forward to my next projects with this fun process (project number two for the summer issue is actually already finished up)!
So…we were given a fat-eighth bundle of Moda Grunge fabric which is an absolutely beautiful collection but a little out of my comfort zone! I’ve used Grunge in several other projects, but I’d always combined it with a variety of prints. As soon as the fabric arrived, however, I knew I needed to use a simple block so the fabric with it’s gorgeous texture and color could really be the star of my project.
I finally settled on making a pillow using a half rectangle triangle block and used this Bloc Loc ruler to help me trim everything up easily. I couldn’t stop at just one pillow, either…so I had fun using a majority of the pieces in a bright version…
and then I had fun making another pillow in beach-blue hues! The pillows are two different sizes and use the same block in two different sizes as well. I made scrappy bindings for both pillows using left over pieces of the fat eighths.
You can find the pattern directions along with more of my thoughts on this project in the Spring 2017 issue of Quilts and More which is on newsstands now. You can find directions for the color-block quilt by Christa Watson and the fun tote by Jeni Baker pictured in the top photo.
I can’t wait for my issue to arrive because there are always a lot of fast and fun projects included…and because I think I need to make the cover quilt, too!
Thanks so much for stopping by!

Both pillows are striking – I especially love the blue/green one. Great choice with your fabric.

Love those pillows. The color and the design really give them pop. I'd call that a successful experiment in the lab!

such beautiful pillows!! I love grunge, but wouldn't have thought of doing it in the pillows with just grunge. I think it looks great!! love the way you quilted it too! I need to get that magazine. I know I can get it at the store, but do they do it by subscription too? Just wondering, since you said you couldn't wait for it to come in the mail. Hugs, H

It's neat that you moved out of your comfort zone with this fabric choice but paired it with a classic pattern. Genius!
