Happy Friday! Today I’m reviewing the OttLite 3-in-1 Craft Lamp. I received the lamp for free from the OttLite Company; however, all of the opinions in this blog post are my own. I’ve been using this light in my little sewing area in our family room for a couple of months now, and I don’t know what I’d do without it!
I’ve always had this comfortable chair with an ottoman that is just perfect for hand-stitching and binding…but the lighting was always an issue until now.
When I took the photos below there weren’t any lights on in the room…just the natural light coming in through the windows. You can see what a difference there is between the photo on the left with the OttLite on and the photo on the right where it is off.
Not only do I do all of my hand-sewing and binding here now, but I’ve also noticed my husband sits there to read when he needs extra light!
This
lamp is a 24-watt lamp that has a conversion kit; it can be a floor
lamp (as I’m using it) but can also be a table lamp or a clamp on lamp.
There is a clip for holding patterns or photos as well as a 5X optical
grade magnifier. Everything is adjustable, so you can move the lamp and
the extra attachments into the exact position you are looking for.
Another feature I love about this lamp is that it allows me to sew with a very bright light…that doesn’t bother anyone else in the room. Sometimes everyone else is watching a movie, and I’m able to sew…see perfectly…and yet not have my light affect their enjoyment of the movie.
In summary…I am very pleased with the OttLite K94CP3 3-in-1 Adjustable-Height Craft Floor Lamp with Magnifier and Clip, Champagne. It’s made things so much easier for me, and I’m super thankful OttLite contacted me for this review!
Thanks so much for stopping by today! Happy sewing and quilting!

Sounds fantastic Sherri xx

This sounds like something I could use. I find I need more lighting when binding or embroidering. Part of it is age :)! Thank you for sharing this review.

I have one of these. I got it for 50% off at Jo-Ann Fabrics a while back. I rarely use the clip or magnifier. I did use the clip to hold the Cross Stitch chart and will continue to do this. The light is awesome for EVERYTHING. 🙂

Your sewing corner looks so inviting Sherri! Sadly, I bought an ott light back in the days when they had trouble with the transformers and it pooped out after a few months. I think they've fixed those problems now, but I've never replaced mine. I wish they would get into the "decorator" lamp business too — so they'd go with room decor — wouldn't that be fun!
Anyway, enough about lamps (haha)– I LOVE that sweet pillow — are the reds and blues all from the same fabric line?

Yes, OttLites are wonderful. How did we ever live without them? Just a word of caution to anyone who has the magnifier or is contemplating getting one. These are strong magnifiers. On the evening of the 4th of July I was using my magnifier near my ironing board to do some needlework. The next morning I entered my sewing room briefly and remember thinking that the smell of fireworks from the night before had sure permeated the room. I went to the kitchen and had breakfast and then went back to my sewing room. I immediately saw smoke and flames coming from my ironing board! The light from the east window had shone through the magnifier onto the ironing board and it was on fire! (remember grade school science?) Fortunately I caught it in just the nick of time and was able to but it out! It still scares me to think that my house would have burned down had I left for the day instead of going back into my sewing room. My magnifier now stays safely put away out of any light unless I am using it. I never leave it unattended.

Thanks Jeanne for writing about your experience. The same thing happened to me about 15 years ago – when I first got my Ott light.
I was a smoker at the time and was stitching away late one night. I smelt smoke that didn't seem right but just thought it was my cigarette in the ashtray. Soon I noticed smoke coming from the easy chair across the room. It was smoldering pretty good under the arm. I was able to put it out quickly and felt very lucky. If it had been the draperies on the windows, I might not have noticed, turned everything off and gone to bed. Certainly, the house would have gone and maybe me with it. In my case it wasn't the sun but the light itself through the magnifier at just the wrong (or right) angle to set a fire. I contacted the Ott people at the time and told them my story and advised they should put a warning on their product but I never heard one word from them.
Jeanne Campise says
Laurel, that is a very scary story! I didn't think of contacting Ott because I thought it was my fault for not thinking about the sunlight through the magnifier. But it can even start a fire from the OttLite light shining through the magnifier! Wow! There needs to be a warning on the light and magnifier. Some product warnings seem silly but this is a serious danger. I hope no one has had a fire overtake their home because of this.

I just bought a small one for my desk but haven't tried it yet. Scary about the magnifier starting fires.

First thanks to A Quilting Life for reviewing the 3-in-1 Craft Lamp. We're glad it could help her out so much!
Laurel and Jeanne we wanted to let you know that our instructions for magnifiers now say not to place the magnifiers in direct sunlight so we've taken all the suggestions to heed! It's also in the FAQs page on our website so we can be sure people know how powerful they are.
Thimbleanna – we do have decor lamps! They're on our website and will list where else you can purchase them : )
