Hello! I can’t even tell you how excited I am to be able to talk a little bit about a new quilt book that is one of those “must haves!” I was able to get a look at this book back in January, and I couldn’t stop reading it! You’ll not only love it for the beautiful photos, but you’ll also want to read it cover-to-cover for the great information included (and then make every quilt in the book)!
Oh, Scrap is a hot-off-the-press book written by Lissa Alexander. Lissa is one
of my favorite people–a down-to-earth genuinely good person who is also decidedly passionate about her family and quilting! You will love learning from her through her book (as I have been blessed to be able to do for many years). I really do want to make every quilt in the book…starting with this Awesomeland quilt above. I just love it and think it would be fun in many, many different color combinations. The hardest part will be deciding what colors to use!
I was really excited to see Lissa’s quilt “Surrounded” included in the book. I have always loved this quilt and think this is the first design of Lissa’s that I sewed a few years back when it was published in American Patchwork & Quilting.
Here is a picture of my Surrounded quilt…I sewed it as part of the American Patchwork & Quilting sew along using all American Jane fabrics from my stash. I remember utilizing a lot of chain piecing to make this quilt! It’s truly one of my most cherished quilts!
I took oh so many pictures of this the other day getting ready for this post…and just have to share this one that shows the binding and one of my favorite low-volume prints in the quilt (the one with all of the punctuation marks)!
I also need to make this Stair Steps quilt right away…I don’t think I’ve ever met a simple patchwork quilt I didn’t love, and this one is perfect for working on in-between other projects. I love the light and low-volume fabrics mixed with the scrappy patches!
And then there is this Friendship Blues quilt…I think you get the idea…every quilt is very make-able and so scrap friendly. I could keep posting photo after photo of every quilt in the book…but really, you should just get it!
The best part of the book, though, isn’t the fabulous photos or the terrific quilts…it’s the incredible treasure trove of information included in such a wonderful way. Lissa writes so that you feel like you’re sitting at her kitchen table with her discussing quilts. She gives many ideas on every aspect of scrap quilting sprinkled with her wonderful perspective. She truly has an eye for pattern and color and a way of easily conveying her knowledge to the reader.
And the cover quilt…another one I want to make! Best of all…one of my readers will be able win an e-copy of this book from Martingale. Simply leave a comment letting me know any of your thoughts on scrap quilting, and I’ll choose a winner on March 26th.
Or…if you want to buy Oh, Scrap!: Fabulous Quilts That Make the Most of Your Stash now you can click on the link!

I love these patterns! I use scraps whenever I can. But they are taking over my space and I need to make a big project to use them up!

Jodi - usairdoll says
Love your scrappy quilts! Aren’t they fun? I really enjoy using scraps. It’s great for variety and using those favorite fabrics all up. It’s hard for me to toss any scraps. My smallest scraps go for my 1/4” EPP quilt I’m making or maybe it will be a tablerunner, hehe. Great job! Thanks for sharing!
I love using up scraps, I am not so good at allowing a quilt to be 'scrappy' though, I still have to be quite controlling with my fabric placement. x
Joan and Kevin says
I love to make scrap quilts. I keep all my scraps in containers after I finish a quilt. So I can make a scrap quilt with it later. Thanks!
Karen Ganote says
Try as I might, I can never use all my scraps-they must surely multiply in the dark when I'm not looking!! I love scrappy deigns and this book looks perfect.

I enjoy making scrap quilts because I don't have to stress over which print of a particular color to use. I can use several, as many as I want. That makes it so much fun.

Scrappy quilts are usually on my list the beginning of each year. Love seeing Lissa's patterns in her new book – wonderful ideas!
For years, I did not know if I liked scrappy quilts or not. I loved the ones my great grandmother's had made. They were different than ones I saw in magazines or on blogs. I realized I liked the ones I owned better because, not only did I have precious memories attached to them,my grandmother had a nack for making them sort of "coordinated". They did not look like a mish mash of random not thought out color blurs( or as a friend of mine would say "scrap vomit") The ones in this book look amazing!
Laura Lane says
I love scrap quilts! In antique quilts, it is fun to look at all of the different fabrics used. In my own quilting , I think it adds interest to a quilt.
Scrap quilts are the best! Love the variety and the often small pieces that comprise the blocks. There's always something to notice.
Shelley Michel says
I confess that I am not a scrappy quilter. While I love the way they look, I’m more comfortable with a kit that is already coordinated for me. But, all the reviews I’m seeing of Lissa’s book really make me want to branch out!!
Steve & Nicole Worthington says
Scrap quilts are great leader-ender projects. I love mixing colors and patterns that I usually wouldn't put together in simple blocks. Mindless sewing is necessary sometimes!
I love scrap quilts! They make a quilt way more interesting to me.
I think that if anyone DIDN’T care for scrappy before seeing this book, they’d be totally smitten by now. There are so many beauties in these photos, and every one of them looks like something to snuggle under. I agree…the hard part will be choosing which one to make first.
Martha Austin says
I have a treasure trove of scraps….like a large basket filled with beautiful pieces of past quilts!!
I’m piecing 2 scrap quilts and also foundation piecing with 1-2 1/2” strips. I love to snuggle under a happy scrap quilt.
I love scrappy quilts, so much variety in them. Thanks for the chance to win!

Scrap quilts are my favorite! I agree with you about this book – will want to make every quilt in it and won't know where to start. One of my favorite things about scrappy quilts is how differently the same pattern turns out for everyone! It is so fun to see how scraps can be used to make beautiful quilts. Thanks!

Both yours and Lissa scrap quilts are beautiful! I’ve always been a fan of scrap quilts and have made several. “Oh, Scrap” looks like a great book to add to my library.

Scrappy quilts are my favorite. It is wonderful to remember the source of each piece as I sew them into the quilt.

Susie Hoover says
Scrappiness = Happiness! Absolutely love scrap quilts and I am so happy to see that Surrounded is included too.
I love scrap quilts. When I'm done with a few projects, I'll take the time to trim down my scraps and add them to the correct drawer. My drawers are getting full again, so it's going to be time to dig in and get a scrap quilt going.
Looking at those quilts is a delight! Especially the first one, in the white room — it's beautiful (and I don't usually like the color orange!). And I always love looking at your quilts, Sherri : ) Thank you for sharing.
I love scrap quilts–and this book looks like something I really "need" as I've been following along on this blog hop. The cover quilt really makes me happy.
I am loving the quilts I've seen on this blog hop because I love scrappy quilts. They are mostly what I make, not being one to buy whole lines of fabrics or precuts. I do occasionally, but still throw in some fabrics from the stash. I definitely need to get Lissa's book!
Becky Hartley says
I need more scraps so I can make more quilts like these! My stash is not very big yet. I always like a scrap quilt best when it is done. Sometimes putting the individual scraps together doesn't feel right, but the overall effect is much more pleasing to the eye.
This would be a great book to start my quilting library!
The scrap quilts are wonderful but Oh how I love those baby feet peeking out under the blue quilt!
janice raley says
I'm always drawn to patterns and books on scrap quilting. Scrap quilting is what got me started quilting four years ago. I had amassed quite a collection of scraps from making and donating chemo caps.
I fell in love with quilting then and have never looked back. Lissa's book looks like a must-have because like everyone else, those scraps just keep growing!
T Holzer says
It's been so great seeing all of Lissa's quilts because they really are so, so beautiful! One day, I hope to have half a dozen or so scrap quilts, but I'm not there yet. I am slowly working on two and I am saving fabric for another two. Thanks for this chance, Sherri.
I feel inspired to sort through my scrap tote! It should only take a whole day!
My favorite way to deal with scraps from a special quilt I make for others is to make a small one for ME afterwards, using most/all of the fabrics I used in the main quilt. Not the same pattern; sometimes just sewing same-size pieces together, with a simple border. It is a great way to remember a quilt that I might never see again! I just love this book, and thank you for the opportunity to win one! Ginny from Harrisburg, PA
sincerely yours says
I love, love, love scrappy quilts and this books looks like a must-have! There's just something warm and cheery about scrap quilts; I kind of think they're my "comfort food" of quilting. And they seem to lend themselves to chain piecing better than any other quilt project. In fact, making 9-patches (or 4 patch) with "leader/and ender" squares is a great way to make a huge dent on a scrap quilt while working on other projects … I'm always looking for ways to stop without cutting my thread. I'm so excited for the person that wins this book!
I have many ideas to make a scrap quilt. I just need to start quilting faster so I can get more scraps! I just started last year so I need more!!!
The Midnight Stitcher says
Busy creating more scraps than I can keep up with, but I will tackle them. I love scrap quilts and also the rewarding feeling that those scraps didn't end up in the garbage – they made another wonderful quilt. I'll be looking for this book.

I am just like you. I want to make them all! I can honestly say I have not made a scrap quilt I didn’t like. Some days I think I should cut up my entire starch and make scraps out of it. Would love this new book.
The right book at the right time. I have been planning some stash busting!
Donna Cutting says
Scraps quilts are full of memories, just love them. My grandma always made scrap quilts. I have one that has fabric from some of her homemade dresses. I just made a scrap quilt using left over fabric from the baby quilts that I made.

I can't die for decades because I have so many quilts I must make first! Now this book has come along and there are still more quilts to make! The best quilt for me is the one with all those cute toes hanging below! I have a friend who is a photographer who says each toe in a photograph is worth at least $1000. I always believe her. So imagine how much that quilt must be worth?
Love the scrap quilts! With an out of control collection of scraps these patterns would certainly help t make a dent in them! They are quilts that make me smile and feel comforted!
Julie in WA says
Wonderful post; thanks for sharing this new book. Sometimes a scrap quilt can look uncontrollable but these quilts are so beautiful. I make stash quilts, which I think counts as scrappy! Only if I am desperate will I purchase fabric.

Scrap quilts are my favorite, and what I make the most. In fact, when I make a planned quilt the best part is thinking about how the scraps might fit into another quilt. I find great pleasure in using bits of fabric saved from years back, so those scrap quilts then become a memory quilt of sorts, only known by me.
Amy Morgan says

As a child my favorite past time was reading and coloring. My new box of 64 crayons was my most treasured school supply each fall. So, in 1987, when I discovered quilting, especially Scrappy quilting, I realized that quilting was simply "coloring" with Fabric! Fabric was my New Box of Crayola 64 Crayons!!

Scrap quilts are great for all those pieces of fabric that just don't seem to fit anywhere else. Thank you for a chance to win.

I have always wanted to make a scrap quilt, but have never done so. This book looks like a great place to start. Thanks for the chance to win one.
Scrap quilts are the only ones I make. When I made your Maple Skies I just used fabrics I had on hand. To me, half the fun is digging around in my scraps looking for just the right piece.

I see many quilts in this book that are calling to me to make them next, as a quilt to make right now or at least as a leader and ender combination! This book is perfect for me as I save all my scraps to use in something else. Love following your blog and thanks!

I love scrappy quilts! And every pic I see of one of Lissa's quilts makes me want to make it! Thanks for the fun!
As far as I can tell, the more fabrics you include in a quilt, the less likely it is that any one fabric just "doesn't go." If you have one that doesn't go, just add more scraps!
I love making scrap quilts. With each quilt I have seen on the blog hop, I just want to make each one. This book would definitely be used over and over!

I have lots of scraps! I love to win this book that's full of beautiful ideas of how to use them!
I love to make scrap quilts. Looks like a great book!

I love scrappy quilts and every pattern I have seen from the book calls to me! Since my scraps never seem to diminish (they just grow), I need this book to make more beautiful quilts with them!
Love scrap quilts. I always have leftover fabric from a project. When I first started out, I threw away the leftovers. There wasn't that much, but didn't have a need for it. What was I thinking???!

I get really excited about scraps, it's an amazing thing to be able to create something beautiful out of left overs, an art form in its own right
Why is it you can make a scrap quilt and end up with more scraps than when you started?!?

I think scraps breed and reproduce when the lights are off in the sewing room. I never seem to get to the end of the scraps.
I have loved seeing all the quilts from this book! I would so love a copy! I love scrap quilts because I feel the tie back to the women of old whose quilts were all scraps because that's all they had. And I love the feeling that scrap quilts are a quilt for free! I love to throw in as many colors as possible- the more the merrier! THanks for the opportunity to win!
I have a lot of scraps accumulating in my sewing room and would love to use this beautiful book to create 1, 2, 3 or more!!! Thanks for the chance to win!!

I’m trying to control my scraps. This book is so inviting – as is your descriptions of the quilts.
I love the look of scrap quilts. More fabrics add to the interest and character of the quilt.

I LOVE scrappy quilts! There are just so many options that I always have another one being planned!
I love scrap quilts, as shown by my stash, which is bins and bins of fat quarters and parts of fat quarters! Thanks for a chance to win this wonderful book!

In my opinion there is nothing better than a scrappy quilt!

The more scraps used in a quilt, the more I love it! So much to look and and I see something new every time I look!

I've only made one scrap quilt but it's one of my favorites. Definitely ready to tackle another one!
One of the fabulous parts of scrap quilting for me is that it can be absolutely stress free. By choosing a pattern that is fairly easy and can use any and all fabrics, just sew, sew, sew and before I know it the quilt top is complete! Thank you for the chance to win this marvelous book! I would love to make every quilt that I have seen so far!
I love what I've seen of this book. I like scrap quilts, especially controlled scrap quilts.
I'd LOVE to win this book of Lissa's! The cover photo alone makes me want to pull out my scraps and start cutting! Also the 9-patch with the little boy in the picture, that looks like a great scrappy pattern. Love your Surrounded quilt as well!
Love all the gorgeous quilts! Scrappy quilts are my favourite and this beautiful book would help me use up my scraps. Thank you for the chance to win.
I love the look of scrap quilts and have several under my belt. I have not been successful in doing a controlled fabric palette, and am looking forward to paging through this section of the book.

Since I have a really hard time narrowing down fabrics (because I love them all, lol) scrap quilts are my favorites!!

Oh I am a scrappy gal!! The more fabrics in a quilt the better!! Beautiful book! Can't wait to get my hands on it!!
I've never made a scrap quilt but feel that I should, based on the size of my scrap stash!
I am thrilled to see this book. I love scrappy quilts and I have soooo many scraps. They do tend to take over.
With lots of scraps on hand (really, it's free fabric!), I need inspiration. Love the Surrounded pattern, so this book might just be the ticket.

A scrap quilter can NEVER have too many scraps!! Count me in for the win, please!!
My first scrap quilt was a string quilt. That was fun and easy to do.

I love scrap quilting! I love the mix of colors and textures and I love using up scraps 🙂 I am particularly excited about Lissa's book as I'm already learning how to make colors work for me in these designs. The light has gone on in my head! What a gift!

Scraps are nothing but fabulous. Thanks to Lissa we have excellent color info on working with them. They can be powerful as she has shown with the quilts in her book.

I make a lot of scrap quilts for charity. What a fun book to have!
Gene Black says
I love scrap quilts because they are lively and fun to look at. But even more I love them because they are the "leftovers" that are often better than the original parts.
Looks like a super book. A great addition to any quilter's library!
