Hello! I can’t even tell you how excited I am to be able to talk a little bit about a new quilt book that is one of those “must haves!” I was able to get a look at this book back in January, and I couldn’t stop reading it! You’ll not only love it for the beautiful photos, but you’ll also want to read it cover-to-cover for the great information included (and then make every quilt in the book)!
Oh, Scrap is a hot-off-the-press book written by Lissa Alexander. Lissa is one
of my favorite people–a down-to-earth genuinely good person who is also decidedly passionate about her family and quilting! You will love learning from her through her book (as I have been blessed to be able to do for many years). I really do want to make every quilt in the book…starting with this Awesomeland quilt above. I just love it and think it would be fun in many, many different color combinations. The hardest part will be deciding what colors to use!
I was really excited to see Lissa’s quilt “Surrounded” included in the book. I have always loved this quilt and think this is the first design of Lissa’s that I sewed a few years back when it was published in American Patchwork & Quilting.
Here is a picture of my Surrounded quilt…I sewed it as part of the American Patchwork & Quilting sew along using all American Jane fabrics from my stash. I remember utilizing a lot of chain piecing to make this quilt! It’s truly one of my most cherished quilts!
I took oh so many pictures of this the other day getting ready for this post…and just have to share this one that shows the binding and one of my favorite low-volume prints in the quilt (the one with all of the punctuation marks)!
I also need to make this Stair Steps quilt right away…I don’t think I’ve ever met a simple patchwork quilt I didn’t love, and this one is perfect for working on in-between other projects. I love the light and low-volume fabrics mixed with the scrappy patches!
And then there is this Friendship Blues quilt…I think you get the idea…every quilt is very make-able and so scrap friendly. I could keep posting photo after photo of every quilt in the book…but really, you should just get it!
The best part of the book, though, isn’t the fabulous photos or the terrific quilts…it’s the incredible treasure trove of information included in such a wonderful way. Lissa writes so that you feel like you’re sitting at her kitchen table with her discussing quilts. She gives many ideas on every aspect of scrap quilting sprinkled with her wonderful perspective. She truly has an eye for pattern and color and a way of easily conveying her knowledge to the reader.
And the cover quilt…another one I want to make! Best of all…one of my readers will be able win an e-copy of this book from Martingale. Simply leave a comment letting me know any of your thoughts on scrap quilting, and I’ll choose a winner on March 26th.
Or…if you want to buy Oh, Scrap!: Fabulous Quilts That Make the Most of Your Stash now you can click on the link!

Love your scrappy quilts! Aren’t they fun? I really enjoy using scraps. It’s great for variety and using those favorite fabrics all up. It’s hard for me to toss any scraps. My smallest scraps go for my 1/4” EPP quilt I’m making or maybe it will be a tablerunner, hehe. Great job! Thanks for sharing!
Kay says
I love using up scraps, I am not so good at allowing a quilt to be 'scrappy' though, I still have to be quite controlling with my fabric placement. x

Machelle says
For years, I did not know if I liked scrappy quilts or not. I loved the ones my great grandmother's had made. They were different than ones I saw in magazines or on blogs. I realized I liked the ones I owned better because, not only did I have precious memories attached to them,my grandmother had a nack for making them sort of "coordinated". They did not look like a mish mash of random not thought out color blurs( or as a friend of mine would say "scrap vomit") The ones in this book look amazing!
Laura Lane says
I love scrap quilts! In antique quilts, it is fun to look at all of the different fabrics used. In my own quilting , I think it adds interest to a quilt.

Scrap quilts are the best! Love the variety and the often small pieces that comprise the blocks. There's always something to notice.

Steve & Nicole Worthington says
Scrap quilts are great leader-ender projects. I love mixing colors and patterns that I usually wouldn't put together in simple blocks. Mindless sewing is necessary sometimes!

I think that if anyone DIDN’T care for scrappy before seeing this book, they’d be totally smitten by now. There are so many beauties in these photos, and every one of them looks like something to snuggle under. I agree…the hard part will be choosing which one to make first.
Martha Austin says
I have a treasure trove of scraps….like a large basket filled with beautiful pieces of past quilts!!

I love scrap quilts. When I'm done with a few projects, I'll take the time to trim down my scraps and add them to the correct drawer. My drawers are getting full again, so it's going to be time to dig in and get a scrap quilt going.
lynn says
Looking at those quilts is a delight! Especially the first one, in the white room — it's beautiful (and I don't usually like the color orange!). And I always love looking at your quilts, Sherri : ) Thank you for sharing.

Carolyn says
I am loving the quilts I've seen on this blog hop because I love scrappy quilts. They are mostly what I make, not being one to buy whole lines of fabrics or precuts. I do occasionally, but still throw in some fabrics from the stash. I definitely need to get Lissa's book!
Becky Hartley says
I need more scraps so I can make more quilts like these! My stash is not very big yet. I always like a scrap quilt best when it is done. Sometimes putting the individual scraps together doesn't feel right, but the overall effect is much more pleasing to the eye.
This would be a great book to start my quilting library!
Kigwit says
The scrap quilts are wonderful but Oh how I love those baby feet peeking out under the blue quilt!

I'm always drawn to patterns and books on scrap quilting. Scrap quilting is what got me started quilting four years ago. I had amassed quite a collection of scraps from making and donating chemo caps.
I fell in love with quilting then and have never looked back. Lissa's book looks like a must-have because like everyone else, those scraps just keep growing!
T Holzer says
It's been so great seeing all of Lissa's quilts because they really are so, so beautiful! One day, I hope to have half a dozen or so scrap quilts, but I'm not there yet. I am slowly working on two and I am saving fabric for another two. Thanks for this chance, Sherri.
Melanie says
I feel inspired to sort through my scrap tote! It should only take a whole day!
Ginny says
My favorite way to deal with scraps from a special quilt I make for others is to make a small one for ME afterwards, using most/all of the fabrics I used in the main quilt. Not the same pattern; sometimes just sewing same-size pieces together, with a simple border. It is a great way to remember a quilt that I might never see again! I just love this book, and thank you for the opportunity to win one! Ginny from Harrisburg, PA
sincerely yours says
I love, love, love scrappy quilts and this books looks like a must-have! There's just something warm and cheery about scrap quilts; I kind of think they're my "comfort food" of quilting. And they seem to lend themselves to chain piecing better than any other quilt project. In fact, making 9-patches (or 4 patch) with "leader/and ender" squares is a great way to make a huge dent on a scrap quilt while working on other projects … I'm always looking for ways to stop without cutting my thread. I'm so excited for the person that wins this book!
Kara says
I have many ideas to make a scrap quilt. I just need to start quilting faster so I can get more scraps! I just started last year so I need more!!!

I would love to win this ebook. Why this particular book?
As a child my favorite past time was reading and coloring. My new box of 64 crayons was my most treasured school supply each fall. So, in 1987, when I discovered quilting, especially Scrappy quilting, I realized that quilting was simply "coloring" with Fabric! Fabric was my New Box of Crayola 64 Crayons!!

I love scrap quilts and tend to gravitate toward them on display. Maybe it's because I love fabric and making scrap quilts means I just have to have lots of different colors and fabrics.

As far as I can tell, the more fabrics you include in a quilt, the less likely it is that any one fabric just "doesn't go." If you have one that doesn't go, just add more scraps!

I love to throw in as many colors as possible- the more the merrier! THanks for the opportunity to win!
