Happy Monday! Last Monday I posted about National Jelly Roll Day which will be this Saturday, September 16th! I’m definitely planning on working on a jelly roll quilt that day! In celebration I’m giving away a jelly roll, but first…
Just a few thoughts on why I love jelly rolls so much! Jelly Rolls are my second
favorite pre-cut (you just can’t top a fat quarter bundle), but they are probably the most easily usable pre-cut. You save a lot of time cutting by being able to use a jelly roll, and they are a lot easier to open up and work with than a bundle!
My favorite jelly roll tip is to use a lint roller to get all of the little extra pieces of fabric off the edges. It really does work (you can also use a lint roller to clean up your cutting table after doing a lot of cutting and trimming)!
Jelly rolls are fun to look at unopened, and easy to store in bins and containers when folded. And…some of my favorite quilt designs use jelly rolls including:
My recent Porch Swing pattern pieced with The Front Porch fabrics…
My Beachcomber quilt pieced with our Desert Bloom collection…
My County Fair quilt pieced with a variety of Bonnie & Camille jelly roll strips…
My Oasis quilt pattern pieced with a jelly roll from our Valley collection…
My Happy Friday quilt pattern pieced from the Beach House collection by Kate Nelligan…
My Anasazi pattern pieced from our Bright Sun collection…
And my Dreamin’ pattern pieced from the Fig Tree collection Chestnut Street! Last week I had paper and PDF copies of my Dreamin’ pattern on sale to celebrate, and this week my Happy Friday jelly roll pattern will be on sale for 5$ in both paper and PDF.
Two of my favorite posts also feature tips and ideas for jelly roll sewing…be sure to visit my 10 Tips for Using Jelly Rolls post and my Scrap Quilts from Strips post for my favorite tips for sewing with these versatile strips.
Okay…now for the blog giveaway: to enter to win a new Moda jelly roll…just leave a comment telling me your favorite jelly roll sewing or storage tip–any tip related to jelly rolls or strip quilt sewing! I’ll announce the winner on Friday’s post…thanks so much for stopping by!

I love jelly rolls….and fat quarters, and all precuts. Using a lint roll on the top of jelly rolls before opening is the best tip. Thanks for the giveaway.
Kleine Vingers says
I'm not so sure if I love a jelly roll, I've only worked with left over strips from jelly rolls given by a friend and often the strips are not exactly 2,5 inch so I find you have to measure every strip.
Patty says
Happy Jelly Roll Day. I use my leftover JR strips to make scrappy bindings.

I have bought only one jelly roll and it looks sew pretty sitting on my shelf that I have not even unrolled it. Sew no tips on useing jelly rolls as I have yet to sew anything with one. Thanks for the giveaway.
Kathy E. says
I am a jelly-roll lover too and am so excited about her upcoming birthday! My favorite tip is one I just recently read. It's to use a lint brush or roller to remove the extra lint built-up on the roll. Do this before unrolling, of course, and get both sides. It really makes a difference!
Sherry VF says
If you are sewing several long strips from the roll, alternate the direction of sewing after adding a strip. This technique prevents a wave (swell) that forms when sewing all the strips together in one direction. sjvonfumetti at yahoo dot com

Rebecca says
Since I've only made two JR quilts, I don't think I have any helpful tips. I held onto my first one for quite a while because I was afraid to use it. My best tip for getting started would be to find a pattern you like. After sewing my first one and seeing how much I liked the results, I was much more eager to open the next.
Rebecca says
Oh–and I like to use leftover strips to make cute key fobs for friends.
Cissa K says
I store my jelly rolls on a shelf, since they are so pretty to look at. I use them for scrap quilts, it is an economical way to get many fabrics that look great together without investing a lot of money. They are wonderful for comfort quilts, since most of the cutting is done for you. Any block that has a 6 pieces grid will finish at 12 inches; a 5 pieces grid will finish at 10 inches and so on, with the jelly roll. These are a popular size for block exchange in my bee. So it is easy to make multiple blocks with not so much cutting time. Thanks for the opportunity.
Bec says
Use a lint roller to remove excess lint from the sides of the jelly roll before unrolling it and measure it to make sure it's 2.5" wide!

T Holzer says
I don't really have any jelly roll tips to share, but I've been using jelly rolls to make your Aubri bags instead of using the tumblers each time. Thanks for this chance!
Jill says
I love to use jelly rolls for charity quilts!
Nancy Schaefer says
Using print and white jelly rolls together makes easy nine patch. Alternate with solid white block to make a quick Irish Chain quilt.
Mickie Gurney says
I love Jelly Rolls because one roll and a little background fabric make a decent size quilt in no time! I store mine in little bins so I can quickly find them. I sew them together in small batches, three or four strips together, then sew those units together, then you don't have to worry about getting a wave in the middle.
Barb says
I have several (o.k.–quite a few jelly rolls) and have only used one so far making a dresden plate design which I really like. I really like looking at them stacked together; they are so pretty. I do plan on using them and have been looking at patterns to decide on my next project–maybe strip pieced butterflies!

Jelly Rolls are my favorite pre cut because I find it hard to cut a 2 1/2 " strip without it getting "wonky". I store my in a clear plastic bin, boring yes, but they are still visible and stay clean.
Rebecca says
I love to take a jelly roll and then add a couple of strips from my fabric stash!!!! help me make it more mine in color and design.
sincerely yours says
I love jelly rolls, too. The most fun our quilt group had with them was doing the "jelly roll race". We turned out lots of beautiful quilt tops at that retreat. As for storing; anything/or anywhere they're visible! Love seeing all those yummy coordinating fabrics!
Charlotte M. says
One of my all time favorite quilts was made from a jelly roll of Sunkissed by Sweetwater from a Moda Bakeshop pattern. I love to buy jelly rolls so I can see all the fabrics in a line and then choose which ones I buy in yardage. I leave them out where I can look at them. People don't realize how much fabric there is in one. I made a whole quilt from a Fig Tree jelly roll, only needing fabric to add borders.
Tracy says

My jelly roll tip is to iron out the center crease and make sure that any strips you have aren't cut wonky…..if they are, choose a pattern that sub cuts the length so that you can avoid a slightly convex or concave piece.
Nancy Pascoe says

I have lint on me just checking the name of the fabric collection tomwrite this comment! Love your blog.
Myra @ Busy Hands Quilts says
I love jelly rolls right after FQ bundles, too! For straight strip sets, I have two methods of pressing that really work. First though, I line up the edges and hold the two strips together as they feed under the presser foot which keeps the bottom strip from feeding faster. I sew all of the strips beginning at the same end, not alternating directions. If I'm pressing the seams open, I run my fingernail down the seam, opening it fully as I go, and then press. If I'm pressing seams to one side, from the right side, I run my fingernail along the seam, opening it fully as I go, and then press. With these strategies combined, the strip sets are always straight.
Teresa @ Aurea's Kitchen says
I never use a jelly roll so it would be great to win one of them.

Forgiven says
I opened my first jelly roll last week, but before I did, I used the lint roller. Wow, that's an important tip! I was glad to be spared the mess. My strips are ironed, sorted, and now I need to leave them behind for a week of travel. The suspense is killing me.

Pretty! You stole my tip- to clean with lint brush, it does help. Also I always cut off the selvage first. Thanks for the great giveaway!

I use the leftovers to make simple nine patch blocks for a very scrappy quilt someday.
Robby H. says
Love the lint roller trick! I think the best jelly roll tip is two part. They are great for replacing cutting 2.5" strips which is challenging for me because I (and my matching arms) am short, BUT, check the pack before you start in to make sure they are straight. Adjustments to plans may be needed if they are not.

I have had problems with getting that "V" when cutting 2.5" strips. So thank goodness for the jelly roll! Saved my sanity. I currently store my pre-cuts in a dresser drawer that is exclusively used for fabric. When I first sewed with my jelly roll strips I didn't know to sew in opposite directions to avoid that rippling. I think I watched a video of Jenny Doan, and she said to sew long strips in opposite directions. Well as you can guess, it worked! While this isn't my idea, it is a tip that works perfectly.
Little Quiltsong says
Loved seeing all of your Jelly Roll patterns. It also reminded me, that I've wanted to make Happy Friday quite a while ago. If and when I buy Jelly Rolls – I keep them in plain sight, and once opened – all unused portions get folded in half and placed in a basket. Love them for bindings and other scrappy projects.
Christine H says
One tip I found when sewing strips is to change the direction you see them together in order to keep them from bowing. I really like the lint roller tip, too. Thanks!
KMSC says
I've never seen with a jelly roll because I don't usually see a jeiiy roll pattern that I liked. However your patterns are very nice. I'll have to rethink this! Thanks for the giveaway!
Susan L. says
Love your tip about using a lint roller! I always put my jelly rolls in small clear bags to keep them from getting lint all over everything. I can still see them clearly, & they won't get any other dust on them either.
Billy'sgirl says
I love to display my jelly rolls on shelves where they can be seen and admired. I try to make sure they are not in the sun by keeping the shades pulled when the sun hits that area of the room, thus hopefully keeping them from fading. I also use the lint roller method when I open the roll to avoid that cascade of lint.
kris says

This sounds like a lot of other Quilter's here, but I love to place mine out on the open, stacking, on top of each other, on fat quarters, side by side. Any way and place I can show them off. Your blog is my favorite and I can't wait each day to read the next one. Thanks for all you do for us.
PegP says

Unknown says
I love jelly rolls, they are my favorite precut. I don't have a tip, but I would love to win!
Liz F says
My tip would be to check the actual measurement of your jelly roll strips before you start your project. I recently made a strip pieced Christmas tree skirt and sewed a quarter inch seam but ended up with slightly larger strip sets than I needed. This may or may not make a difference depending on what pattern you're using.
ktcling says
JR strips make the *perfect* bindings! Especially if you are going for the scrappy look.

Just recently started quilting with my mom. First quilt I made was a strip quilt. Loved it – and so easy!
Deb in Oregon says
I have the largest drawer units (heavy plastic) I could find, several – and those are where I store all my pre cuts. As a quilter of well over 40 years, I have had LOTS of scraps from projects, and have cut everything up into 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3" (strips & pieces are stored together), charms, layer cakes and odd sized small scraps. Each requires several drawers, but all are ready to go, ironed and ready to sew into my next scrappy quilt, which makes it easy to just start sewing. Must admit I've only ever purchased charm squares & yardage – only just recently purchased 2 layer cakes (those haven't even arrived yet!), and never purchased a jelly roll, but have been very tempted! Thanks for the opportunity to win what may be my very first jelly roll! Deb E / Oregon mdenders@msn.com

Lori says
Well, since I'm a "fabric collector", jelly rolls are a must, to round out the collection.
Mary says
I love using jelly rolls! My tip is for if you have grandkids. If you like to admire the jelly roll all wound up and beautiful, don't let your grandkids near them as they will unroll them and you'll never get it back to its original wound-up beauty! On the other hand, if you need to keep your grandchild occupied a jelly roll can keep them busy for a while unrolling, arranging and rearranging, etc. If they are old enough they just might be the start of their first sewing project. Then you can go buy more!
Pam McDonald says

I love precuts! They are the perfect way to get a *coordinated* scrappy look with 40 (+-) beautiful fabrics.
Unknown says
Jelly Rolls are my favorite pre-cut! I'm relatively new to quilting, so the variety of colors and patterns in a single rolls makes up for the fact that I don't have a huge stash. Also, since I'm not great at cutting, it makes my piecing so much more accurate. My only hint is to open it immediately so you are able to use them at a moments notice. I'm not afraid to use one strip if I need it if the jelly roll has already been opened!

I love Jelly Rolls! If the pattern doesn't use all of the strips I store the leftovers hanging from a bulldog clip – they hang nicely from a hook, dont take up much room and you can easily see which prints you still have ?
Mary Beth says
No tips to share, but I do like the versatility of Jellyrolls.
Abigail Morrison says
My favorite jelly roll tip is to have a small plastic container/box and put the jellyroll, a cute coordinating backing fabric, and the chosen pattern for the jelly roll all together, that way, you remember what you want to do with it and have a backing piece when you need it. Plus, if you change your mind about the pattern, and you need to use the "backing fabric" for borders or as a large block, you have it available and can get another fabric for the back. (And you get more fabric)
KathleenD says
I haven't used many jelly rolls yet. I did use most of one in a pattern made for layer cakes. It came out very nice! I've also used JR strips for binding, which was wonderful.

Before opening go over both sides with a lint roller. Makes for cleaner floor and you. Lol

After I open a jelly roll I find it difficult to view all the beautiful patterns. My daughter gave me some hanger clips which she had purchased but did not work for her purpose. So now after opening a jelly roll I use those which hang to view my colors and patterns in a jelly roll. It could not be better suited- works great! It also works very well if you have left over fabric from a quilt as it's very easy to locate rather than hunting for in your stash the entire day.

I love Jelly rolls. I am quite a few squirreled away, I should pull them out and make every quilt you have shared here!

Well, first I was going to mention the lint roller trick, then the sewing one direction and the starting from the opposite end. I will say that a solid color jelly roll is great for sashing between quilt blocks, particularly since I am awful at cutting. I love to use them for scrappy binding, too. Did I come up with anything original? I don't think so. My favorite thing is to stack them on the shelf and just look at them, because they are so pretty. I have made a tote bag and a couple of quilts using them. Have more on my to do list.

I have never used a jelly roll and don't own one. My storage tips would be worthless since my sewing room and stash are in a mess due to health. I'm working on cleaning the sewing room and have my machine in the shop for a tune up, so I'm hopeful to soon be piecing again. For me, my biggest tip which probably most people follow anyhow, is to straighten their sewing area before stopping for the day. This makes the area pleasant for you to return. You can put your things all in the places where they belong, including anything for your stash. My health issue has one facet where all of a sudden, I get absolutely exhausted and cannot do another thing. Then when I get energy, I have to do necessary things such as meal prep, if I can do that. I need to make a habit to clean up my last mess from sewing before I start another round of sewing and follow my own advice instead of either continuing on the same project and getting more items out to add to my clutter or even just shoving the current project to the side for a different project. I need to keep my area clean and inviting for me. This will not only help my mood but also help to keep me from purchasing things I currently cannot easily locate. Thanks for the giveaway. I'd love to have a beautiful precut and want praticularly to try a jelly roll. When I read a magazine, I see lots of patterns for them.
Janelle Bucher says
My Tip is that they are beautiful just like they are, all rolled up. I am one of those people who love the look of the whole roll of fabric and I have yet to actually use any of my jelly rolls. I will use them eventually, but I have so many projects that the jelly rolls will just be admired for now. Thank for the opportunity to win.
Susan Smith says
My best jelly roll top is to just open it up! I think that is the hardest part of sewing with precuts….not wanting to break them open because they are so pretty. Just remember, the quilt will be beautiful too! I'm late posting as our power is out indefinitely due to Irma. But thankfully, we are all safe!!

I love all precuts and use them together often. Charm packs bordered with jelly rolls makes a cute and fast quilt. I love sewing with small pieces so cutting them into 2 1/2" squares is my favorite. I love that I can line up 5 or more and cut along so fast. Scrap quilts are my favorite and it is so easy to blends jelly roll scraps. Never thought to use the lint roller tip! I usually just grab them all by the fold, take them outside and shake like crazy to get all that fuzz off.

I love jelly rolls. There are so many things you can do with them. My tip is that when you sew them together along the long edge, alternate the directions in which you sew them. They tend to make the piece wavy if they are all in one direction.

I bought my first jelly roll because I loved how it looked – and then it sat on the shelf for a while… My tip is: if you find a JR pattern that you really like, save it- either in a file folder or Pinterest, etc. Then when you pick up a jelly roll, you'll have a pattern ready to use. There are lots of fantastic jelly roll patterns (as Sherri has shared!) and lots of free patterns available too!

I love your idea to use a lint roller !!! I also love the idea to spray starch all of my strips before I begin ! I hope I win because I love these rolls!!
SherryB says
I love using jelly rolls because they all work well together in a quilt. But sometimes I have leftover 2.5" scraps, so I put them in bins with similar "feel" or colors so I can just grab them when I feel a quilt coming on. I also have many patterns that work well with 2.5 x 20 strips (perfect for FQs or half a jelly roll strip), so sometimes I sew up some blocks with these and store in the same box. This makes having a progressive but scrappy UFO ready whenever I feel like sewing for fun!

The lint roller is a good idea. Although, you will need to utilize this more than once. Having worked with fabric those pinking edges just keep on giving. If only they knew just how much those jelly rolls are loved. Happy quilting ladies.
I had previously commented on utilizing hanging clips in the closet to hold opened jelly rolls. It does make it easier to view fabrics and helps with the rolls hanging straight. There are many wonderful hints here to consider. Such a good idea!!!!?

I keep my jelly rolls on a three tiered metal stand. I think is was for pastry so I figured, hey, that works.

I've used a few jelly rolls love the variety variety in each one and love to add solids to play with them.

I have my jelly rolls in 12"x12" clear storage containers. Michael's almost always has them on sale!

my tip is to open up the jelly roll and press all the pieces to get rid of the folds and ripples and then they will cut better. I love all cuts of fabrics. just have more layer cakes and charm packs than jelly rolls.

They are great for binding

I like to stack them in clear containers to keep them dust free, while allowing me to see all the wonderful colors!

Oh, I do love jelly rolls!!
I store mine in clear plastic storage boxes, so I can see them and they stay "fresh"!
My tip is something that was a time saver on my last jelly roll quilt… I needed to sub-cut the strips into smaller pieces (6 1/2 inches), so I set out my strips, 2 to 3 (or 4) stacked up together. Then those stacks were lined up parallel to each other, following the lines on my cutting mat, making very sure they were all straight. Then I could cut multiple stacks, all at the same time! This made very quick work out of cutting the whole jelly roll up! (I cut all the strips up this way, because I wanted to really mix my fabrics up completely. I did not want to just sew sets of strips together first and then sub-cut, which would have given me duplicate sub-cuts.)

My favorite tip is to use them. Don't leave them sitting on the shelf. Find a pattern and open up that jelly roll. 🙂 I am working on taking my own advice by taking a class using a jelly roll!

OPEN and MAKE something would be my tip (which I need to follow). Being new to quilting, I'm still learning and collecting beautiful fabric. I have two jr's that are making me smile so I need to take a deep breath and open one.

While I just swoon over the jelly rolls in all the amazing fabric collections, I have found that a nice solid color jelly roll is endlessly useful! It makes cutting background fabric a cinch 🙂

I've never used a jelly roll, but you've inspired me. I'm enjoying reading the comments, too.

I have made a couple quilts, one was Strawberry Lemonade. My favorite was Moda's Prairie Paisley. I made a variation to a log cabin and was able to buy extra fabric from the line for borders. My tip is don't hold on to them too long or you won't be able to find coordinating fabric to finish out your project.

I have yet to sew with a Jelly Roll, but my tip is that they stack well inside cylindrical candy jars and double as decor until you use them!

I LOVE Jelly Rolls because I'm not an accurate cutter and here I have a perfect 2 1/2" piece EVERY TIME!

My favorite tip about Jelly rolls is that are about 2 1/2 yards of fabric (if there are 40 strips). Thank you for the giveaway opportunity!

I usually buy FQ bundles. I store those and the few JRs on an open shelf to look at.

Ha ha – don't open a jelly roll until you intend to use it! No matter how I try I can't get one rolled back up nice and pretty after it's been unrolled.

GOOD MORNING! I soooo enjoy reading looking at your quilts you've made! Fall is my favorite time of year. I can't wait to decorate! I must confess that I do leave Fall decorations out all year.
Any who…
I put my jelly rolls I those clear paint cans that I find at Michael's. I can see them yet they are protected from dust!

I mostly drool over jelly rolls, and don't really have any particular tips, but I like them for my daughters to use as it saves a lot of time in choosing and cutting fabrics.

I have my jelly rolls sitting on my top shelf looking pretty. Haha, I still haven't opened one to use. But I did use my fat quarters and cut them into my strips to be used in the Patchwork Swoon quilt!
