Moda Blockheads 5 (Round 2) Block 8
Block 8 (Sparkle) Details
Crystal Manning’s Sparkle block was a lot of fun to make this week. (Find Crystal’s blog here). I had a lot of fun playing with different prints and colors for my blocks to see how the colors might play off each other to add a “sparkle” effect to the blocks. I did do a couple of things differently in order to make the piecing easier:
- I used strip-piecing for the patchwork corner units. By cutting a 1 ½″ x 27″ strip of the teal and the background for the larger block I was able to make all of the four-patch patchwork sections without cutting any squares. (For the smaller block I cut 1″ x 21″ strips for the four-patch units).
- I also cut the pieces for the flying geese units ¼″ larger on both sides and then used my Bloc Loc Flying Geese rulers to trim.
- I followed the pattern instructions for the remaining pieces and units.

Sherri, will there be any you tube or other media about the Heart of the Home sew alone that starts this week? I have gathered my supplies but thought there might be some tips that will come along.

I am using strawberry lemonade fabric for quilt along. Not enough for border or backing. Do you have a suggestion on what fabric I could use there instead of strawberry lemonade? I’m a beginner in quilting and have problems putting colors together. .Thank you

I would suggest an all white border. You might even be able to make a scrappy binding to really make the outer edge stand out. As for backing, Greens from Emma, Bountiful Blooms, or Favorite Things would all work. Also any of the lighter florals from Emma would work as well.
