I’ve been waiting to make and to share this quilt for oh so long! Joanna brought the charm pack version of this quilt to market in Houston, and I immediately fell in love with the simplicity of the design and the way it allowed the fabrics to really be the star of the quilt! I was happy to piece the Layer Cake version of the quilt this January.
I hinted earlier that I was making a fun, simple to sew Layer Cake pattern, and this is it…
I even shared a sneak peek…although the front is pieced with Aloha Girl, I was able to use Somerset for the backing (the greens from the two collections work especially well together).
The piecing in this quilt is perfect for a beginner…you just need to be able to lay out the whole quilt in one place…I don’t have a lot of wide open spaces in my home, so I actually moved some furniture to lay this out in my living/dining area to make sure I got it together right.
Since Joanna was going to use my quilt for pattern photography, I sent it to her when I finished so her quilter, Diana, could do the quilting. And of course Diana’s quilting is absolutely beautiful; there is just nothing like custom quilting which I believe gives a different “feel” to a quilt. I usually use all-over patterns on my quilts to keep expenses down, but wow…when this arrived home I sure noticed the difference.
I hope I’m not over-loading this post with photos…but really…I love this quilt! Another reason to love this pattern is that it really does use most of the Layer Cake; because of this you do need to be careful while cutting…measure twice…cut once!
You can read more about it on Joanna’s blog…and she has the patterns available now, too pdf here and paper for pre-order here!
Thanks so much for stopping by!

It's a beauty for sure! And I love it when you can almost use all of the precut you're working with.

This fabric is so fun and cheery. I've always been a little confused by how to use a layer cake (no idea why, it just seems like an odd sized precut to me), so I love seeing patterns that use them.
