Hello and happy Tuesday! Thank you so much for all of the wonderful responses to the idea of having a scrappy Log Cabin Quilt Along! This is going to be so much fun! I’m just about finished with Quilt Market preparations and will be ready to go full-speed on this project when I return!
Scrappy Log Cabin Quilt Along
Let’s begin. First of all you’ll want to go here to download the cutting instructions PDF. (Please respect my work and remember this is for your personal use only).
Basically, one light strip and one dark strip will make each block which finishes at 8″ x 8″. For a scrappy quilt, be sure to mix up your strips after they are cut so that the prints are in random order. Also, be sure to keep two matching of each size together if you want to achieve the look in my blocks above. Finally, note that the cutting column on the far right of the chart won’t be used if you are making a red/green version like I am. (If you have Layer Cake squares (10″ x 10″), you’ll be able to cut all the strips needed from one square for either the light or dark section of a block). There are so many ways to use scraps for this project.

My Scrappy Log Cabin Quilt Setting
Update: This is how I ended up setting my quilt. I alternated green center and red center blocks and rotated the blocks to create the pattern. If you’ve created a more scrappy quilt you won’t have to worry about alternating colors for the center squares. I love the classic look of this traditional setting. (I did play around with a few other ideas but in the end really loved this lay out best). As soon as it’s back from the quilter I’ll update this main page again with a finished photo!
And here is my finished quilt…you can see more photos of it here.
If you are on Pinterest, be sure to pin the Scrappy Log Cabin image above for easy reference to come back to this page. As we progress through the quilt along, I’ll add links to the other pages to this one so everything can be accessed from one spot. If you’re sewing along on Instagram, please tag me in your photos or use the hashtag #scrappylogcabinquiltalong so I can see all of the scrappy blocks!
Happy quilting! Thanks so much for stopping by!
