Hello and happy Monday! Today I’m sharing the Labor of Love Sew Along update with all of the information you’ll need to make the Labor of Love sampler quilt. This sampler uses my Labor of Love: Scrappy Quilts from the Heart of Home book. In addition, I have a fun video to share which showcases the quilt. And I have a PDF download with the fabric requirements to share today as well.

Labor of Love Sew Along Update
Last month I shared my Labor of Love Sampler Quilt. This quilt is pieced with one block adapted from each of the 12 quilts and projects in my Labor of Love: Scrappy Quilts from the Heart of Home book. (You will need the book to participate in the sew along). I’ll provide 13 free PDF patterns in order to adapt the blocks from the book for the sampler quilt.
Labor of Love Quilt Video
Get an up-close look at the Labor of Love quilt by watching the video above or here on my YouTube channel. I go through and talk in more detail about the quilt in the video.
Labor of Love Quilt Fabric Requirements
Click here or click the button below to get the PDF fabric requirements for the Labor of Love quilt. While the sew along won’t begin until this fall when the Balboa fabrics I used in my quilt have shipped, I know that many of you might want to use other fabrics or your scraps for this quilt. Having the fabric requirements now will allow you to start gathering your fabrics and supplies.
Optional Supplies
Additionally, there are a few tools and supplies that will make it much easier to make your quilt. They are listed below with links for your convenience.
- Easy Dresden Ruler
- Bigger Perfect Circles
- 1″ Sides Hexagon Templates
- Creative Grids Log Cabin Trim Tool
Labor of Love Sew Along
The Labor of Love Sew Along will begin at the end of September when the Balboa fabrics are scheduled to ship. I’ll let you know the exact date as it gets closer to fall.
I look forward to sewing along with you this fall and seeing all of the beautiful sampler quilts! Happy quilting, and thanks so much for stopping by!
Mavis Skene says
Where can I buy your book in South Africa as I would love to do the sew along. Thanks Mavis Skene
sherri McConnell says
I know it should be available on Amazon. Also I’m not sure if Fat Quarter Shop ships to SA, but I know they do ship internationally. Thank you!
Barbara says
Hi, so happy you are doing this, I just ordered the book from your Etsy account. Will you have a Facebook group for this BOM? .
Thanks

Karen A. says

Lisa Keller says
What size does the sampler quilt Labor of Love finish.

Michelle says
Hi, Sherri, I am new to quilting, and I have the fat quarter bundle on order but could you tell me what number, or name you used for the 3 3/4 background fabric? Thank you!
sherri McConnell says
Moda Bella Ivory 9900 60
🙂
Marianne Harper says
Will we be able to buy the fabrics to match your quilt design during the sew along? Will there be a kit maybe we could purchase? The quilt is beautiful!
sherri McConnell says
Yes, I’m waiting to begin so the fabrics will be available. And I’m also planning on kits!

Jan B says
Hi! Love this quilt & your fabrics. However, when your supply lists states “fat quarter bundle”, how many fat quarters does the quilt require? I find that bundle size varies so in case any of us decide to use our own fat quarters, how many would we need? (I have already ordered your book & can’t wait to get it!) Thanks for your clarification. Have a great day!
sherri McConnell says
You will definitely need at least 20 fat quarters. I used a bundle with 30, but I did have lots of scraps.
Laurie Menken says
What fabric did you use for the background.
sherri McConnell says
I used a combination of Moda Bella Ivory 9900 60 and some of the tone on tone ivory prints from a few of our collections. The Balboa collection has a sweet floral tone on tone that I used a lot of.
Barbara says
Hi,
Can you advise the specific floral tone on tone fabrics from your collections?
For example, does the Summer Sweet daisy floral compare in color to the Bella Ivory?
Thank You,
Barb
sherri McConnell says
Yes, Bella Ivory 9900 60 is a great match to the tone on tone fabrics in our collections. I interchange and mix them all the time 🙂
Kathleen Longstreet says
I am excited about this project. By September, I should be finished with current projects (LOL!!) but, of course, can put them in my UFO piles.
I was gifted at Christmas with fat quarter bundle from the latest Jennifer Chiaverini production. (I had asked for a Jelly roll wasn’t I lucky?? I could not imagine what I would use it for – and voila – you have the perfect answer.
Debbie Jeter says
I love the look of the quilt and I am very interested in doing it. I have already pre-ordered the material, and I have the book. I downloaded the PDF file of the fabric requirements, but it does not mention the finished size of the quilt. I was hoping to use this for a twin bed. Any chance it will fit?
sherri McConnell says
74 1/2″ x 95 1/2″ with the border. You could leave the border off to make it more suitable for a twin 🙂
Karen says
What size will the blocks be and what size will the quilt be? Thank you,
sherri McConnell says
74 1/2″ x 95 1/2″ with the border I have pictured.
Jackie Lohrey says
OMG I am totally excited about the quilt-along. My Balboa fabric is on pre-order, I ordered my supplies from the FQ Shop yesterday and THEN I rearranged my bedroom so the bed is kitty-corner in the room and when I walk past it during the day I can see the fruits of my Labor of Love! The only thing left other than to get started is to figure yardage for a bedskirt, pillow shams and window valance. Can you say BEST BEDROOM EVER????? 🙂
sherri McConnell says
Thank you so much!
Sherri 🙂
The Joyful Quilter says
What a sweet quilt. It is SEW beautiful!!
Connie Stanley says
Sherri, will I be able to keep up with this if I am a novice quilter? This does look complicated at a glance yet when i look at each block it doesn’t look so bad. Should i wait a while before doing such an elaborate project ? I’m a perfectionist and I don’t want to waste a lot of fabric and mess this up.
sherri McConnell says
Many of the blocks are simple, and I will have videos to share for those that might take a bit more. Still I don’t feel like any are that difficult. I could recommend an easier setting for you without the strip-pieced sashing. It would make your quilt smaller but easier to put together.
Kathy says
I would buy a kit! Would it include the background and border fabrics? I assume I would purchase the book, the four tools mentioned and 6+ yards of fabric backing, in addition to the kit, correct?
sherri McConnell says
yes, I’m getting so many requests for kits…I am thinking about doing them!
sherri McConnell says
Just listed the kits–information is in the listing in my shop 🙂
ava norton says

sherri McConnell says
Just listed kits!
Wendy lewis says
Can you tell me exactly where I can find this labor of love sampler quilt kit? I can’t seem to locate it! Thanks
Wendy says
Sherri,
I can’t seem to find the kit? Can you tell me where exactly I can find it! Thanks
JANICE L CARNEY says
I can’t wait to make this beauty! Could I use 2 fat eighth bundles instead of one fat quarter bundle?
sherri McConnell says
Yes, I believe that should work fine!
Wendy Groszkiewicz says
This quilt is so beautiful! I was originally going to try the Gelatto quilt, but I’d like to try this one instead! I already pre-ordered a layer cake and charm pack for Balboa…would it be possible to do this one with just those? Or could I just buy a few half-yards of certain fabrics to make those work?
sherri McConnell says
Yes, you’ll need some bigger pieces…so if you ordered your favorites in half yards that would work. I’ll also some some scrap bundles for sale in the fall that will help out!
Barbara Thomas says
I am a new member of your “fan club” and looking forward to your fabric, book, and Sew Along.
Will the Sew Along be a block each week commencing this Fall? Just planning.
XO, Barb
sherri McConnell says
yes, block of the week beginning in September.
Thank you so much!
Marilyn Weyman says
Sherri, I was really excited to get my Balboa Mini Charm packs yesterday! I immediately started working on a pillow project that will go perfectly with the quilt! The colors are so pretty. I can’t wait to get more so I can make the back and binding for the pillow.
