Hello, friends! Today I’m sharing all of the details about this year’s free BOM mystery quilt. The January 2021 Quilt Block of the Month PDF is available today. I’ve also filmed a step-by-step video tutorial to show you how to make this month’s scrappy Churn Dash. Get all of the details in today’s post.
January 2021 Quilt Block of the Month
This year’s Mystery Block of the Month has two different size options: 6″ and 12″. I pieced this month’s larger block with a scrappy mix of from our Happy Days collection shipping in March. And I pieced my small version of the block using the Fig Tree Christmas Figs II collection.
2021 Block of the Month Quilt Details
- First, this is a mystery block of the month. (No full-size pictures yet).
- The quilt is a sampler with 12 different unique pieced blocks. No applique’ or paper piecing required.
- Patterns release monthly on the first Thursday of the month here on the blog.
- Each month, a step-by-step video tutorial sharing how to make that month’s block will be featured. Watch the video here on the blog or on the YouTube channel here.
- The Fabric Requirements for the finishing of the quilt will be shared in a few months. For blocks, I suggest 12-15 fat quarters for the large blocks (fat eighths will work for the small blocks). You’ll also need 2-½ yards of background for the larger blocks and 1-½ yards of background for the smaller blocks.
- Go Here (or click the button below to download this month’s block pattern PDF).
January Block Video
Watch this month’s video above, or go here to watch it on the YouTube channel. In the video I walk you through construction of the block from start to finish. I also share tips and tricks that I used while piecing my version.
A Few More Things…
- First, be sure to download any of the 2020 patterns by the end of this week. I’ll be removing the patterns from my site and adding them to the shop soon. You can find the final post for the 2020 quilt here with links you’ll need to get to all of the posts and patterns.
- Next, I shipped the January kits on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday this week. (So they should be arriving soon if you pre-ordered and paid the January invoice). The remaining available monthly kits can be found here. Kits require a sign up fee and monthly billing. I should have more finishing kits available in March when the yardage ships.
- And if you’re looking for Project Boards like I used, you can find them here.
- Finally, get the ruler I used to trim the large half-square triangles here.
I hope you’ll enjoy sewing along this year. Happy quilting, and thanks so much for stopping by!

I’m looking forward to quilting along with you!!! This is going to be my first BOM and I’m so excited to be doing it with you! There are so many going on right now but you make it so easy to understand for beginners. Thank you!!! ? My mom passed 4 days before Christmas and I need something to get me going again. This seems to be the way to help me through the process. Being in a lot makes it even more difficult so I need something to keep me busy besides housework. Thanks again Sherri! ☺️

What fun! My mother and I will be doing this BOM Mystery together. Thank you! Will you share the completed sizes of each quilt? Or is that part of the mystery? 😉
Marge says
Sherri, I have been following along with your BOM for the past two years doing the 6in size and the 12 in size.
Love it, love it. The blocks all go together with ease and a little challenge. Plenty of instructions and great tips.. I haven’t decided if I will do this in Red, White and Blue or Christmas colors.
Thank you, thank you for all your great ideas.

Hi Sherri! Excited to start this first block of the month with you! I have 2 layer cakes of harpers garden that I really want to use-can you tell me if that will be enough or if I’ll need to supplement (other than I know I’ll need to use some of my yardage for the background fabric, backing, and binding).
Really like the video that helps us all too! Thanks so much!
sherri McConnell says
I think 2 Layer Cakes will work!
Beverly Behrns says
Sherri, I would like to do,the BOM with you but have not yet signed up. Is it too late seeing as the January block has been done already?. Thanks.

Denise Sawyer says
This looks like fun. What is the size of the finished quilt? I don’t see it mentioned on the blog.
Thanks!
sherri McConnell says
Finished Quilt Size using 6” Blocks is approximately 29 1⁄2” x 37”
Finished Quilt Size using 12” Blocks is approximately 54 1⁄2” x 69 1⁄2”
I haven’t finalized the setting…but the sizes above will give you an estimate…

In your tutorial you mentioned at the end that you would be linking to notions and things that you used to make the block. I wanted to know what ruler you used when you trimmed your HSTs,, but I couldn’t find any links for that.
I really like your tip to trim the small rectangles after they have been pieced together.
sherri McConnell says
Just added the link…in the list near the end of the post…thank you!
Susan says
Since Churn Dash is one of my favorite blocks, I’ll at least make this one!
Susan Frierson says
Hi Sherry! Thank you for sharing your BOM and videos. I don’t normally like mystery quilts since I’m a control freak and normally want to know where I’ll end up. But I like all of your stuff, so I’m joining. I have a goal to use only my stash this year. My fabric collection is getting out of control! I have 2 layer cakes, jelly roll and mini charms packs from Brenda’ Riddle for Moda that I’ll be using for the 12” and I’ll be using Christmas scraps for the 6”.
Question: I finished the 12” block and it finished at 12.5”. Is that how it’s supposed to be?
sherri McConnell says
Yes, it will be 12 1/2″ which will make it 12″ finished when sewn into your quilt.
thanks so much for sewing along!
Barbara Thomas says
Hi,
Sew Wonderful!
Can you share the name of the Half Square Triangle – Diagonal Trimming Ruler that you use in the January block?
Thanks!!!
Becky Noxell says
I was just wondering what the seam allowance is because I am trying to sew together the 6 small rectangular pieces and once I have all six together it is short just wondering what I’m doing wrong.
sherri McConnell says
Seam allowance should be 1/4″. If your seam allowance is even a little off on this it can affect it… best tip is to measure the seam allowances with a ruler and adjust a few slightly as needed.
Suzy Arsenault says
Finished this block and it came out so good. I needed to watch your tutorial 3 times. I watched it then went to work on tbe block, and came back to watch. I have learnt, not only do I need to be able to read the pattern, but I am also a visual learner. Thank you for filming. I look forward to the future blocks.
Charmaine says
Thank you for sharing your 2021 block of the month just finished January block and looking forward to February block I’m doing mine in tilda fabrics
Nancy Lanning says
I have never done a mystery quilt. I want all my squares to match so I want to know how much fabric to buy for the 12 or 18 in square quilts. Is that possible or is that the mystery? I don’t have a stash yet!!
sherri McConnell says
I have suggestions on fabrics to buy at the end of the post…
