Hello 2013! I’m happy to be starting out the new year introducing you to Monique’s Blogger Girls Block of the Month! (If you are here for the Schnibbles Parade it will post tomorrow, January 2nd).
My friend Monique of Open Gate Quilts has designed a gorgeous block of the month which will run for 6 months. Each month a new block will be available for free via pdf download. Make sure you download the patterns each month as they won’t be available after the 6 month period is over.
You’ll have the option to make a 6 block quilt or a 12 block quilt…Monique will provide setting and finishing information for both quilts. If you are making the 12 block version of the quilt you’ll need to make two blocks from the pattern each month. What is really fun about this is that by changing up your fabrics and fabric placements the two blocks need not look anything alike (both blocks pictured above are block one–same pattern and different fabric placement)!
I was excited to join in and had the hardest time picking fabrics, but making a two-color quilt had been on my list for quite some time, so I decided to use Minick & Simpson’s new line Indigo Crossing. It has really been fun to work with just the blues and creams. I’ve completed my first 8 blocks now and am really enjoying each and every block!
Block 1, first version.
And block 1 in the variation version (sorry about the lighting on this photo).
Another fun aspect about this block of the month is that there are several “Blogger Girls” who will share their versions with you each month. Everyone is using different fabric combinations, so you’ll be able to see a variety of options for your quilt! (I’m thinking I might want to make more versions after I see everyone’s blocks today)! Supply list and ‘getting started’ information can be found here. Be sure to stop by Monique’s first to download your pattern and then drop by the other blogs to see each version! You’re going to love this project!

See you tomorrow with Schnibbles!

Nice, Sherri. I've often thought about going outside "my" box and doing a red and (something other quilt). Guess I'm a little late to join you on this BOM.
Enjoy.

I didn't catch that they were different patterns until you said so! I have got to give this a try.

It's neat how just by changing the fabric placement, it looks like a totally different block!

I am interested in the Schnibbles program as I remember it last year. I buy a pattern each month and do a block? I am not sure how this works. I will find out tomorrow. If you can take a few lines to explain for us newbies I'd sure appreciate it. Thank you.

I love your choice of fabrics! I went to Monique's site but couldn't see how to sign up to receive it.

I love your fabrics. A two-color version will be so pretty.
Hope you have a very happy New Year!

Hehe, I had to look twice to check that y weren't misleading us and that they really are the same block! I really had to look, closely. I love your fabric choice. I've printed out the instructions but don't think I'm going to get to make it at the same time. Too many commitments with work and small children. It's in the one day folder!

I like your fabric choice, Sherri. The supplies list calls for fat quarters but you show a layer cake. Is that going to work for us to do the entire quilt? I have better luck getting layer cakes online than fat quarters.

That looks like tons of fun. I really love two tone that you are using. The blue is so rich and sophisticated. We had a speaker at our guild Christmas Party and she had tons of civil war colored quilts and they are amazing. I feel like I want to go in all of these new directions for me 🙂

Hi Sherri, I am thinking of joining in on this BOM, but I have a question. I am used to making my flying geese another way without the special ruler mentioned. I have another one that works well. Would that be a problem? Also I have some red, white and blues in my stash that I thought I would use. They are from an older line by Sandi Gervais and then random things I have collected. DO you think they would look nice used in this BOM? I could actually send a photo if that would help. Sorry about all the questions, i just don't want to make a mess of this. 🙂 Thanks!!
