Hello, friends! Welcome to the first post for the A Quilting Life Block of the Month January 2025 block. I’m super excited to share this month’s block(s) with you and share all about the different options you’ll have for sewing along with me this year. Be sure to watch this month’s video for even more ideas and information.
A Quilting Life Block of the Month January 2025
This Year’s Quilt and Projects
This year’s 2025 Mystery Block of the Month features 18″ log cabin blocks with 6″ centers inspired by my Summer House (Heart of the Home) quilt from last year. And, since I know some quilters appreciate the small block sewing the most, I will also have a project at the end of the year that uses just the 6″ block centers. Feel free to sew along and make all 12 large blocks, or just make the small blocks, or anything in-between!
How to Sew Along
Each month the patterns will release here on the blog on the first Monday of the month (schedule below). You don’t need to sign up, just visit the blog here to download your free patterns. (Members of my Patreon Group do get the downloads in the Patreon platform and won’t need to download them here). If you get behind and need to look up patterns from a previous month(s), just visit the Block of the Month Archives page below.

January 2025 Quilt Block Video
Watch this month’s quilt block video above or head over to our YouTube channel to watch. In the monthly videos I share tips for block construction, show the pressing on the back of the blocks, and give additional insights and information about each block. The videos are super helpful especially for beginner quilters.
Next Month’s Block
Be sure to stop by next month on Monday, February 3rd for the second block in this sew along!
Happy quilting!
Karen Tatro says
Which fabric line are you using for the block of the month? It is beautiful!
Angela says
It’s their new Rasberry Summer collection
Kim Fuoco says
So glad you asked this question, I was looking everywhere to figure that out. Because I have Laguna Sunrise and the prints didn’t match up.
Jeane Allison says
Oh, this is going to be so much fun! My first thought is to copy tiny pictures of my 2 granddaughters onto fabric and fussy cut them into the house windows. When you reveal the monthly blocks, I’m hoping I can incorporate a little picture of each girl. Then at the end of the year I’ll have a log cabin quilt (my favorite pattern) with a year’s progression of their growth. I just knew there was some divine intervention that had me buy myself a new sewing machine for Christmas! 🙂
Mindy says
Raspberry Summer ☺️ it comes out in February.
Melissa says
So excited to sew along. I don’t have a log cabin quilt. This one has a little twist to it. Thanks Sherri.

Tabitha Conwell says
The link button to the fabric requirements doesn’t show up for me on my iPhone 16 unless I turn off reader view. This may be why so many are asking about fabric requirements. It’s a pain to always be turning off reader view and there may be a setting to fix that issue but I haven’t looked into it yet as I just got the phone. Also, when you turn off reader view you get a pop up ad that blocks some of the page. Just press the tiny x to remove it.
Heather says
Morning, I think I want to use my stash (as I have too much like everyone) Is there a post with fabric requirements?

I adore this BOTM already! Log Cains are so versatile. I am thinking already that I will plan to add four blocs to get my usual square quilt, depending on how the finishing looks.

I am a new quilter of 3 years and I love your quilts of the month. In the middle of 2024 I had a serious accident and I am just getting back to my machine. I am looking forward to my year with this quilt to help my cognitive skills along with my need for making quilts. Your quilts and fabric always make me so happy. Look forward to a better year!!!!!

I am a very new quilter and I like the way you propose flexibility in participating. I think I will work on my block making skills a bit and try out some pot holders or a mini quilt or two with your blocks. Next year, I would really like to follow along for the whole project.
Bobbi Jo Bolden says
I’m sew excited to join this Block of the Month for 2025. It is my first of what I hope will be many 😊 Thank you, Sherri, for your inspiration.

Working on a quilt with my 9 yr old granddaughter. We are doing a log cabin. Since she just started out we are going to do 2 1/2″ strips. I think I may do the middle block and let her do the strips for this one since we only see each other once a month to sew. Also April 7th is my birthday! Yay! My kids (7) refer to me as the queen bee in case you’re looking for inspiration. Thanks for the BOM.

If we wanted to use the fabric line you are using, what would be the amount of fabric we would need for the year? How many jelly rolls etc.?
Linda says
Hello
I’m thinking about participating in the BOTM. The first block is so lovely.
I am wondering do you have fabric requirements for all twelve blocks? I would like to buy all the necessary fabric before starting.
Thank you,
Linda
sherri McConnell says
Yes, the fabric requirements can be downloaded from right below the pattern file 🙂
Cheryl Bradley says
Hello, in your you tube video you stated that a fat eighth bundle would work but in your fabric requirements I only see a fat quarter bundle listed. I have a fat eighth bundle will this work? Thanks!
sherri McConnell says
It should be fine–depending on how you utilize the lights and darks you may need to pick up a few extra fat quarters…
thank you so much!
Cheryl Martin says
Hi Sherri- Can you please tell me what program/format you made your pattern instructions in? I can open a pdf but when I print it either skips all the text, or it prints nothing at all. I’ve tried downloading it, opening it in google docs and in preview. I’ve tried it from my laptop, my phone and my ipad, and I can’t get them to print out. Help? Im usually pretty adept with these things, so I don’t know what else to try.
Any suggestions are most appreciated and maybe easier to email me a reply…?
Really looking forward to this BOM. Thank you so much!!
sherri McConnell says
I’m not sure of the issue. I use standard Adobe for the PDF’s. I haven’t heard of any other issues–and it’s been downloaded thousands of times today.
Cheryl Martin says
Thank you for the reply, I’ll try again! 🙂
Cheryl says
So, is this not able to be printed if I don’ have Adobe Acrobat? You said people are downloading, which I can also, but printing is the issue for me. I have a Mac laptop, iphone and ipad, so is this not compatible with Macs?
I looked up getting Adobe and it’s $250 for the year, which is a crazy amount just to print some patterns, haha! I’m just hoping you may have another suggestion. Otherwise I guess I just read this off my ipad. Thanks in advance for any suggestions you have.
sherri McConnell says
You don’t need to purchase Adobe Acrobat to download and print 🙂 I think it definitely works best from your laptop.
Linda Allen says
How many fat quarters are in a fat quarter bundle? Thx
sherri McConnell says
It totally depends on the collection. But in general you’ll need at least one fat quarter per block…more to make it more scrappy. I recommend a collection of at least 24 for this quilt.
Peggy Duncan says
I’m a little confused on fabric requirements. On the large quilt, is the 1 3/4 yd of light fabric used for the light strips in the log cabin? Or is that for the 6 1/2 inch blocks in the center? Or is the layer cake used for the lights? I am probably the only one who doesn’t understand but I sure do appreciate your clarification for me. I am looking forward to doing the log cabin.
Annette Udey says
I am also confused about this. I ordered the layer cake and the jelly roll and need to buy the 1 3/4 yards for the background. I want to follow exactly and I can’t figure out what exactly she is using for this ? Help please
Angela De Luca says
I have the exact same question. Is the 1 3/4 yards for the blocks…either the light log cabin “logs” or the middle blocks? Or something else in the finishing?
Mary Wilkerson says
I have a some French General fabric that I think I will use for this project. I know it will have quite a different look. Thanks for the patterns!
Linda Andersen says
Will all the centers be that same house, just different colors?
sherri McConnell says
No, each center will be a different block 🙂
Yvonne says
I love your little house and wouldike to join this sew along. I currently am sick but love to see! I hope I can manage this. I have lung issues but on medication. It’s been a while for me to enjoy seeing so wish me luck. I see everything I need here..Thank you so much for sharing.
Jane Thiemens says
I’d like to do the table runner. The instructions for January say If doing the table runner, blocks completed month to month DO NOT require the following General Log Cabin Instructions. What instructions do I use to make the blocks for the table runner?
sherri McConnell says
Make the center blocks only and then I’ll have the table runner finishing instructions in December using all 12 center blocks. Thanks!
Karen Uresk says
I cut out the fabric & sewed at my quilt guild sewing day. I showed January block at our show & tell & many of the members are going to sew along for the year! Thank you for doing this for us, I love it.
sherri McConnell says
Thank you for sewing along!
Yvonne Christian Gregory says
Thank you for the email. I’m excited about the block of the month.
Kelli says
The quilt size and block number for the first option (using a layer cake + 1/2 yard lights) is not making sense to me. Could you please clarify?
Thank you!!
