Hello, friends! Today I’m sharing some older scrappy quilts along with all of the details of the new one I’m starting now. I’ve been wanting to make a Sherri & Chelsi fabric version of this popular scrap quilt for some time now, and made my first block the other day! Keep reading for all of the details on this project including the full block tutorial and my tips for making this quilt.
A New Scrappy Trip Quilt
My First Scrappy Trip Quilt
Back in 2013 I first found out about the Scrappy Trip Around the World tutorial shared by Bonnie Hunter in 1999. I was immediately taken with the project and had a ton of fun using fabrics from my scrap bin for my first Scrappy Trip Around the World quilt. You can still read Bonnie’s on-line tutorial and download a printable PDF from her site. Click on the button below for all of the details and tips from Bonnie. Then keep reading for some additional tips and ideas I have.
My Christmas Scrappy Trip Quilt
Pretty soon (back in 2013) I decided that I needed a Christmas version of this fun scrappy quilt. I went to work at cutting strips from my stash and soon had my Christmas version. I used a Bonnie & Camille flannel houndstooth for the backing, and our family has used and loved this quilt each holiday season since.
My New Scrappy Trip Quilt
For several years now I’ve wanted to make a new version using just fabrics from our Sherri & Chelsi collections with Moda fabrics. Since I am nearly done with my current scrap quilt project (my scrappy Half-Square Triangle quilt), I decided to get a start on a new version now and try to have it finished up in early fall.
The Scrappy Trip Video
Watch my video where I share both of my previous quilt and thoughts on my new quilt including some tips for fabric choices. You can also watch this video on our YouTube channel here. And then click on the button below for a PDF of my tips and the number of strips you’ll need to make a variety of quilt sizes (based on using 2 ½″ strips).
Stay tuned for progress updates on this quilt as I work on it throughout the rest of the summer!
Happy quilting!

I’ve always wanted to make BH’s Scrappy Trip quilt too. Thank you for the Tips sheet. I may just jump in now.

Thank you for your Tip Sheet. Is the # of strips 18″ or WOF (40″ – 42″)
sherri McConnell says

What timing! I have quite a bit of Christmas yardage from various collections that I did not know what to do with. This would be great for that!

In order to have the chain effect does the light strip have to be in the same position in each block? I know you said it can be anywhere in the block, but does it have to remain consistent to get the chain?
Thanks for all the good info!
sherri McConnell says
It doesn’t have to be in the same position when sewing your strips together. But you’ll need to arrange each block like mine to get the pattern to show up. Thank you!

Can you please give a little more detail on the placement of the light strips? Im trying to figure out if they all go to the outside of the block or how exactly you place the, to get the chain/border effect. Thanks!

Hello,
If I want to add a white strip to each of my blocks do I need to lay them out in a particular order when sewing the strips into a block, to get a pattern in the over quilt layout?
Thank you!
sherri McConnell says
Yes, each block will need to look like my finished block.
