How to Make a Patchwork Key Fob

Hello! Today I'm sharing a simple method for making a patchwork key fob--using scraps or mini charm squares! I made one last spring using our Creekside fabric collection, and I thought it was about time to make one using The Front Porch fabrics!

I love using a key fob...it makes it so much easier to find my keys in my purse!

And making this little project doesn't take much time at all...it's a fun item to make for gifts!

Here is what you'll need to make a 1 1/4" wide key fob (key fob hardware is also readily available in a one inch width, so make sure you purchase the correct hardware):
  • 13 mini charm squares or scraps (find lots of fun mini charm packs here)
  • 1 rectangle 1 3/4" x 13" for key fob lining
  • 1 rectangle 1 3/4" x 13" fusible fleece or batting for stabilizer
  • Key fob hardware

First, trim the mini charm squares to measure 1 3/4" x 2 1/2".  Then sew together along the 2 1/2" sides.  Press seams open or to one side.  After pressing, trim the sewn piece to measure 1 3/4" x 13".  Fuse the fusible fleece to the wrong side of the patchwork piece making sure that the fusible side doesn't touch the iron surface.

Sew the patchwork piece with the fused interfacing right sides together with the lining rectangle along both long edges using a scant 1/4" seam, forming a tube.  Be sure to backstitch at each end of both seams to keep everything from coming apart when you turn it right side out.

Turn the piece right sides out and press well. Add some top-stitching; I stitched five lines approximately 1/8" apart.  If necessary, trim the edges so they are straight.

You're just about finished!  Fold the patchwork key fob in half and insert into the open end of the hardware.  Wrap the hardware in fabric or batting so that the metal doesn't get damaged while you are finishing.  Use pliers to close the hardware around the ends of the fob.  Attach a key ring, and you're finished!

If you want a longer key fob, just increase the number of patchwork squares until you have your desired length.

You can see the first key fob I made here...and you can find key fob hardware here: 25 Sets - Key Fob Hardware with Split Ring - 1.25 Inch Wide
Happy quilting...and thanks so much for stopping by.
