Yesterday was one of those days where you don't have much time to sew, but you have to sew something...I didn't want to work on a Work In Progress--I wanted some instant gratification! Enter my collection of "strings." I was only going to sew one block...but you know how that sometimes goes!
There are just some fabrics that I can't bear to throw away...even the smaller pieces...so I've patiently been collecting "strings" to make a scrappy quilt. (My string blocks finish at 6". I used Stephanie's tutorial to make my blocks).
The funny thing about "strings" is they seem to multiply. You can use one and still have enough left to use again. My pile didn't seem to diminish, especially after I remembered another place I'd stored some!
I'm hoping to make a lap-size quilt made completely of my Fig Tree & Company strings. After that I'll tackle my bin of "color-wheel" strings. That should keep me busy for awhile! (I'll announce the giveaway winner in my next post)! Have a sew wonderful day!

I actually have a goal to make a string quilt out of my fig tree cream strings only. I think that it would make a really fun calm quilt that could go almost anywhere.
I have not made one of these but I have been thinking about it - did you use a foundation or just start sewing your strips?

This is a great idea for some summer sewing. We go quite a bit to our place in central Mn. and I need smaller projects to take along and use my little feather weight singer as well! thanks for the great ideas!

Y'know, every other time I've seen a string block I've thought "too much chaos" and moved on. But this? Is gorgeous! It never occurred to me to put some order into it. I'd been planning on giving away my string-sized scraps but now it looks like maybe I'll have to find a good use for them. :)
Great blocks! You will have a quilt before you know it. I think you could now count this as a WIP - lol!

Well, that tears it!!! I'm going to pull out all my strips from my scrap basket cause I find that after being away from my sewing machine for almost 6 months now, except for 2 small projects I made for Christmas, I am ready for some instant gratification and I love your blocks and the blocks Stephanie made on her great tutorial. So much fun! As soon as I fully recover from this latest surgery I'm going to try them. I hope I have enough strips without cutting some but if I have to cut a few, I will. Thanks so much for sharing this. Now I've got to get a separate basket for my strip scraps. I see some very fun, scrappy projects in my future...yours too, :o) Hugs...
OH...it just occurred to me! I've been doing stitchery blocks that are 6 1/2" with multi-colors threads, to keep busy while I can't sit at my machine. Don't you think that these type of blocks would make wonderful blocks to use between the stitchery blocks? I'm gettin excited now, LOL!!!
Must be the weather! I just made a string top (haven't sewn the blocks together yet), and blogged it here: scrapsofhappiness.blogspot.com I found it extremely relaxing and fun to do.
I put the four blocks (all from my scrap basket) together like you showed us in your blog and quilted it. I ended up with 32 mini quilts. I used leftover binding from previous projects and I used spools of quilting thread that didn't have enough on the spool for a big project. They are very scrappy and cheerful! I'm giving these as hot pads for Christmas. I'm using some in my kitchen and I love how big they are!
Looks great! I'm making a string quilt (it's an ongoing project) out of red and green fabrics for Christmas. My blocks are 8.5" because I use scrap paper from work and this way I only have to cut a couple of inches off the length. Plus, I'll need less blocks... lazy? Nah.
"Strings" must be the thing right now. I'm making one too with some friends. It's really fun and so simple! Your Fig Tree version will be beautiful, I'm sure. Can't wait to see your finished product.

I love making string pieced blocks. Yours are so lovely in those soft colored prints. My piles never diminish either, which can be a bit deceiving when I'm trying to use them up!
