I have two quilts to bind this week…yay! Maybe I can find something to watch on television while I get these two bound.
Some Happy Go Lucky arrived at my house last week; I shared it on Instagram but never shared it here. As you can see I’ve already pulled out two fat quarters from the bundle for a project (maybe I should just untie that string, but that is always so hard for me to do–the bundles are so pretty as they are)!
My first “all the way finished” project this year is actually a long – term work in progress. I started it (and shared it on my blog) several years ago when Snippets by American Jane first came out. I used charm squares from snippets, left over half square triangles from other projects, and even some odds and ends from my 30’s scrap bin. This was actually one of the first quilts I ever made without a pattern. I made a big mistake with it (you can see my mistake from the photo below–I left out the sashing and posts at the ends of each row), and it hung in the closet for years. But every time I looked at it, I realized I really did love the quilt, regardless of its imperfections. In January I got it quilted up and finished binding it the other night.
Kate says
Imperfections are what make our quilts ours. I've got a few; my latest quilt was one disaster after another, but I have a bit of a soft spot for it now that it's finished. I think my mum would pinch it given half the chance 🙂
Stephanie says
Pinwheels are sweet blocks. Who is to say there really is an imperfection? Only you would know it was "different." I call them quilts of character.
MaureenM says
Agree completely!! And I can see why you love it, it's beautiful!
Missy Shay says
Maybe it is just too early in the morning, but I don't see the mistake. Are you talking about the cornerstones? on two sides but not on two sides? If so, I like it!
JoAnne says
I think that whenever I see an antique quilt with an imperfection, "make do" area, or just a downright mistake, I think it has WAAY more charm than a "perfect" quilt. Perfect quilts are kind of boring. In my opinion, the mistake quilts have an intriguing story/air about them.
Mary says
I love your snippets quilt. I don't think anyone but us ever sees the mistakes…and if they do, we are giving our quilts to the wrong people.
I want to recommend a show for you to watch when binding. It's a movie by the man who made Downton Abbey and it stars Maggie Smith. It is called From Time to Time. It's about a boy who going to stay with his granny on an English estate during the war and there is an element of mystery and the supernatural…in a very magical, family friendly way. I really really enjoyed it. Very feel good! I need to find some more binding entertainment myself!
Karen - Quilts...etc. says
usually we are the only ones to notice the mistakes – or imperfections, if someone else notices and says something you can always say it was planned so it would be "different" 🙂
Gertie Pye says
Snippets was the first collection I ever bought and therefore also my first quilt! I can tell you now that it was not my most accomplished piece but I still love it – it now lives with my little god-daughter.
Wanda says
I love this quilt. I immediately thought "I want to make this." Good to know it's in your book. Guess I'll be getting it. Oh, and what immperfections?!
Joyce Carter says
Your quilt is beautiful just the way it is. I don't think anyone will ever notice your "imperfections" except you so enjoy the quilt.
Grandmasewnsew says
It's a very cute quilt! I could not find a problem (thought maybe you wanted to add parts of pinwheels where the white triangles are, duh) until I read the posts here! This quilt now goes into the "modern" column 🙂 and remains a real cutie!
Thimbleanna says
Wow Sherri! I LOVE LOVE LOVE this quilt pattern — so cute! I wouldn't have noticed the "problem" with the quilt. I feel your pain with your hesitation to have it quilted — stuff like that drives me crazy. Just keep it folded so you don't see the offending sides LOL!
Melia Mae Quilting says
I absolutely love this quilt. I have your book and I plan on making this quilt for my husband because I can fussy cut around the "coffee" cups. Yes he wanted a coffee quilt. I was suppose to make it for last christmas, but I couldn't find the right patter and now that I have, I can make it for this Christmas. By the way, don't you just love those "binder clips". Best invention known to man. My second favorite part of quilting is the binding. Enjoy and make sure you "watch" a good movie or get caught up on some good shows!

Your Snippets quilt is beautiful! I can't wait to see what you make with Happy Go Lucky. I always hate to remove the ribbon, too.
Jayne Honnold says
Your quilt is wonderful. It's uniquely yours, too. We quilters have been rather brainwashed into thinking every part of our quilt and our process must be perfectly executed. I think we need to change that mindset. Your quilt illustrates why perfection is at time overrated.
Jane Eilderts says
I love this quilt!! We all make mistakes!! When my girls made all their quilts for 4-H projects I made sure they shared with the judge any mistakes. Never once did a judge count them down – they always were glad they shared!!
Kathleen Guenther says
We always do focus on our mistakes, but most people don't notice because the overall effect is so beautiful. Love your quilt.
Maria says
I don't believe quilts should ever be 'too perfect'. It defeats the purpose of why the quilt was originally made in the first place.
I believe that once you pour so much of yourself into your creation, it is part of you…even with a bit of imperfections 🙂
Your quilt is lovely. I am glad that you decided to forego its banishment and allowed it to come out and cheer you up 😀

I love this quilt! All my quilts have imperfections…most people don't notice them, and if they do, it just proves it was home made.
Chris says
It makes yours a one of a kind. When our ancestors began quilting their fabrics didn't co-ordinate and their patterns varied with time and materials.
I think this is a beautifully executed quilt – actually quite like the lack of sashing and end posts!!
Enjoy it – I love it!
Nanette Merrill says
This is really cute. Love this one.
Darlene says
Two quilts to bind – woohoo!!! I haven't done any serious binding in a long time. LOL It might be time to quilt a handful of tops.
I think your pinwheel is beyond adorable. I don't see any mistakes – I see your quilt. And, it's adorable.
Dresden Quilter says
I think it is absolutely wonderful. Mistakes are just part of the story of a quilt and our lives.
Laura G says
If there is a mistake in the quilt I certainly cannot see it and I think it is wonderful the way it is. Supposedly Amish quilters make "mistakes" in their quilts. They do this because the only way anything can be perfect is if it is made by God.
Stina Blomgren says
I think quilts like these will be so much more loved just because of the little mistake than without…makes it special…and I must say I d love it…it's a beauty…!!!!!:0))

It's a beautiful quilt and I wouldn't have noticed your minstake if you haven't mentioned it!
But I wonder a bit about your 'when Snippets by American Jane first came out'. Will Moda reprint it? Please say yes!
Mary Ann says
It is a gorgeous quilt and am glad you finished it. Sometimes I think I make some kind of mistake in everything I make and I finally said to myself that is okay. No fun quilting if I beat myself up when I make a mistake!
Chris S says
Your quilt is beautiful! I love all your work! Glad I'm not the only one who has a hard time undoing those precuts-hee hee 🙂
tamidug says
Little imperfections in our quilts just proves that we are human. I was always told that if you cannot see the mistake as you are galloping by on a horse, then the mistake is not really there!!
Tami
Jan says
Your "mistake" took some finding on my part – such an adorable quilt!
Karin says
I didn't notice the cornerstones missing until I read someone else's comment. The two backwards pinwheels only a quilter would notice 🙂 I think it's beautiful just the way it is!
Helen L says
I love your quilt!!! I've pinned it in hopes that one day i'll make one using your idea! You've done a beautiful job on it! Hugs, Helen
Maria says
It really look so beautiful that I think it doesn't mind your mistake

We are all imperfect so I think it is okay for our quilts to be imperfect, too! 🙂
jenni says
It seriously took me several minutes to see your mistake. You do such a beautiful job piecing and matching colors no one will notice!
If I threw out every thing I messed up I would have nothing! It is part of the journey.
Mama Pea says
I love your quilt. I had to look really hard to find the mistake, even after you had pointed it out! I love it that way, anyway. It gives it more character. I know what you mean about having a hard time unwrapping those bundles! Tough to do!
Jeanenne Nielsen says
The person that taught me to make quilts says that the mistakes we make, make these special quilts our own. I really love your quilt and wouldn't have known it had a mistake.
em's scrapbag says
Your cheery pinwheel quilt is darling.
They're not imperfections they are character and that's what makes them charming.
Vicki Lou says
I love it!! It's simple, colorful and delightfully friendly.
I'm into taking an idea and making the quilt my own without a pattern. Really FUN to watch it take shape. Good for you!
trudie says
There are those quilters who purposely put a block in upside down or backwards. Perfection is in the eye of the beholder and this "beholder" thinks your quilt is perfect!
Sandy says
This is definitely a happy quilt. We don't need perfect, we need whatever makes us happy. (I need to remember this also!)
Donna says
Sherri, your attitude toward a quilt's mistake is inspiring. Our quilts are not made in quilt factories. Each one is a thing of beauty, warts and all. Glad to hear a Pro say "it doesn't matter."
Sarah says
Often I wouldn't find a mistake in other people's quilts until they ask me to find it, or point it out, so I think we've got to adapt that attitude to our own mistakes. Unless its really going to irritate me, then ill fix it.
Debbie @ MeandMyDIY says
Hi Sherri, I'm a first time visitor, having seen your beautiful quilt over at Thimbleanna's. I can't believe you almost didn't quilt it! As I said on Anna's blog, 100 years from now, someone will lovingly remark on how it's their favorite quilt because of the little mistake. Have a great day!
