My Fat Quarter Shop 2008 Designer Mystery Block of the Month quilt is finished (well, ready to be quilted anyway)! The last block arrived last Wednesday, and I finished the top on Friday. I really love this quilt, and it’s been put on the very top of the “to be quilted” pile!
With spring market last weekend in Pittsburgh I was feeling a little “market envy.” In fact, with all of the wonderful market posts I wanted to be there even more. I needed some therapy; I thought about retail therapy, but that didn’t seem to make sense (I need to save my quilt money for all the new and wonderful fabrics that will be out shortly)! I finally decided on cake therapy…layer cake therapy, that is!
I’ve had this Fig & Plum layer cake for a little while now. I even bought some yardage of some of the fabrics…and the cream from Patisserie matches perfectly and was my fabric of choice for the background. I had a design in mind that I’ve seen in a few places and so decided to make the quilt without a pattern.
I cut my layer cake into 5-inch squares, and I cut my background fabric into 2 ½″ strips. I needed to cut the strips into squares, so I got out my Mini Square Quilter’s Rule; I learned about this ruler from some of the ladies I quilt with…and I love it! I think my squares come out “more square” using this ruler.
I’m “snowballing” two opposing corners on the 5 inch squares…and I’m sewing again ½″ away so that when I cut my corners off the scrap pieces are already sewn into a ½ square triangle block. I sewed a lot (I needed a lot of “not being at market” therapy). The only breaks I took were to watch my daughter run in the Division finals for track (she added some more medals to her pile, including a gold in the 1600 relay, her favorite event, and is going to State next week to run in three races…yay)!
Here are the results…248 ½ square trianges and 124 blocks for my quilt! I might need to make just a few more blocks–I’m going to figure out how big I want the quilt and borders and finish it up today! Oh, and I have another Moda layer cake ready to go in case I need more therapy!
Have a wonderful day!

I was having Market envy too, especially since my friend Ricci went with Superior Threads. I followed others blogs and saw pictures. Did you see the frenzy at Moda? I went to Market in 2002 when it was in Salt Lake and the Moda booth was the craziest place I’ve ever been.

Oh Sherri, I want to go to the same therapist that you go to. I just love what the therapy has done for you. And it only cost a layer cake and some yardage? (wink)

Your block of the month is wonderful, you are so lucky being on the right side of the 'pond' when it comes to postage and customs charges. I just love all the layer cakes and jelly rolls particularly the Fig & Plum ones. There is a new BOM coming out and I am so tempted to join up.

Hi Sherri,
I am always impressed by your promptness in any BOM you participate!! Lovely colors on that quilt top.
To answer your question… yes, I do quilt my quilts on a domestic sewing machine. And I also have stitch regulator — that really helps with the stitch quality. I was able to quilt a 94″ square quilt with my machine. I never thought I would be able to do that…
Cheryl says
Love the Designer BOM all together!! I have my last block cut and ready to be pieced. Now I am really ready to have it done. Thanks for the inspiration!! Can’t wait to see how that cake layer quilts comes out!

Sherri – we got the same finishing kit for the Designer Mystery! Now I know what it will look like when I ever get around to finishing the 5 blocks I have left! It’s so funny – I also want to do a quilt just like your market therapy quilt – only I have a pattern for one very similar! I think when Fall market rolls around I just might try your therapy!!
Cheers!

Hi Sherri,
oh…I think I should have bought the DMBOM finishing kit…well, I have to come up with my own finishing solution…;o). It's beautiful to see the quilt top finished (I just recieved and pieced the 12th block).
Oh, and the Fig&Plum quilt is gorgeous…I just finished "my" own F&P quilt…it's now in the dryer & I hope to show it soon.
Have a beautiful Sunday,
Julia

Hello, I just hopped over here from Sisters Choice Quilts blog, I saw you blog on her list and just thought I’d stop in. I’m so glad I did. I have signed up for the Fat Quarter Shop’s 2009 Designer Myster block of the Month and after seeing your 2008 BOM top finished I am so excited to get started on this years. This is my first venture in a BOM online and I was hesitant but not any more. Thanks so much for sharing your pictures. It is beautiful.
