I wonder how many of us started quilting with Quilt in a Day quilts by Eleanor Burns. I know I made about 8 quilts from her Double Irish Chain book before feeling confident enough to try other patterns. (I happened to get on an elevator with her at Spring Quilt Market, and thanked her profusely for her inspiration during my quilting beginnings–she probably thought I was crazy; I kept going on and on about all the quilts I made from her patterns those first couple of years)! Anyway, because of procrastination I needed to make a baby quilt in a day. And I had just a jelly roll and yardage for backing.
I kept thinking I would design something, but in the end I just started going through patterns looking for anything that had the proportion I was looking for. I put a call out on Twitter to find out what size to make a crib quilt, then found a pattern that met all of my “requirements.” I started cutting just before lunch-time. By eight o’clock in the evening the top was finished.
I was lucky that one of my “go-to” quilters could fit it in on such short notice!
And the quilting was perfect…swirls, and heart and flowers…just perfect for a baby girl quilt made with Anne’s Lily & Will!
The pattern I used was Allison’s “Sugar Dish.” I made just 30 of the box blocks, and the size turned out perfect. If I had had a little more time I might have put in one Dresden block…or one applique’d flower block just for fun. But as it was, I barely finished in time. Allison’s pattern was great, though, and is now my official “quilt-in-a-day” pattern for baby quilts. Oh, and I used left-over jelly roll strips for the binding, which turned out really cute.
I was so busy with my procrastinated sewing project, football, a marathon housework binge and a baby shower…that I never got to post about the winners from the Honeycomb Parade the other day…
So, without further delay…congrats to Paulette from my parade and Gretchen from Sinta’s parade who get the amazing prize package above provided by Carrie–all of her new Schnibbles along with a roll of her new fabric collection for Henry Glass, Nine-Dots! (Carrie’s new book Another Bite of Schnibbles: 24 Quilts from 5″ or 10″ Squares (That Patchwork Place) will be available very, very soon, too…can’t wait)!
Congrats also to: May Kristin from my parade who won some great charm packs from Bear Paw Quilts & More; Sandy F. from my parade who won a $15 gift certificate from Quilter’s Paradise; and Carol from Sinta’s parade who won a gift certificate from Quilt Taffy!
I’m looking forward to Monday…and hoping to get into the sewing room to sew and sew and sew! Thanks for stopping by–have a great rest of the weekend!
