I wonder how many of us started quilting with Quilt in a Day quilts by Eleanor Burns. I know I made about 8 quilts from her Double Irish Chain book before feeling confident enough to try other patterns. (I happened to get on an elevator with her at Spring Quilt Market, and thanked her profusely for her inspiration during my quilting beginnings–she probably thought I was crazy; I kept going on and on about all the quilts I made from her patterns those first couple of years)! Anyway, because of procrastination I needed to make a baby quilt in a day. And I had just a jelly roll and yardage for backing.
I kept thinking I would design something, but in the end I just started going through patterns looking for anything that had the proportion I was looking for. I put a call out on Twitter to find out what size to make a crib quilt, then found a pattern that met all of my “requirements.” I started cutting just before lunch-time. By eight o’clock in the evening the top was finished.
I was lucky that one of my “go-to” quilters could fit it in on such short notice!
And the quilting was perfect…swirls, and heart and flowers…just perfect for a baby girl quilt made with Anne’s Lily & Will!
The pattern I used was Allison’s “Sugar Dish.” I made just 30 of the box blocks, and the size turned out perfect. If I had had a little more time I might have put in one Dresden block…or one applique’d flower block just for fun. But as it was, I barely finished in time. Allison’s pattern was great, though, and is now my official “quilt-in-a-day” pattern for baby quilts. Oh, and I used left-over jelly roll strips for the binding, which turned out really cute.
I was so busy with my procrastinated sewing project, football, a marathon housework binge and a baby shower…that I never got to post about the winners from the Honeycomb Parade the other day…
So, without further delay…congrats to Paulette from my parade and Gretchen from Sinta’s parade who get the amazing prize package above provided by Carrie–all of her new Schnibbles along with a roll of her new fabric collection for Henry Glass, Nine-Dots! (Carrie’s new book Another Bite of Schnibbles: 24 Quilts from 5″ or 10″ Squares (That Patchwork Place) will be available very, very soon, too…can’t wait)!
Congrats also to: May Kristin from my parade who won some great charm packs from Bear Paw Quilts & More; Sandy F. from my parade who won a $15 gift certificate from Quilter’s Paradise; and Carol from Sinta’s parade who won a gift certificate from Quilt Taffy!
I’m looking forward to Monday…and hoping to get into the sewing room to sew and sew and sew! Thanks for stopping by–have a great rest of the weekend!

My first quilt was the Quilt in A Day Log Cabin…I'll bet Eleanor hears that a lot…Love your baby quilt. What size is it? I always wonder what the right size for a baby quilt is…I usually make them big so they can put them on the floor. ENJOY your sewing time!

The colors for the baby quilt are perfect for either a boy or a girl. And yes, I made a few of Eleanor's patterns when I first started, too.

How interesting…just read comments and find so many stitched Eleanor Burns as a first quilt. I think many of us must have had learned back in the early 80s? I too made Eleanor Burns…I believe it was a May basket wall hanging though. I know I ditched it long ago because I never really did like my color choice…it didn't go in with my home.
Your new little baby quilt is sweet. I love easy especially when needed in a hurry!
I best get on…work doesn't get accomplished on its own around here.

I love the baby quilt! Hmm, I should check out quilt in a day! of course I've heard of them but never tried one. I have so little time to quilt…that might be just the answer for me!

Log Cabin quilt as you go KING size was my first one, and I have been hooked on quilting ever since then.

What a great post, gave me the uplift I need to make a quilt instead of running out and buying a gift! Thanks!

Don't feel bad, I think Eleanor Burns gets a lot of people thanking her for introducing them to quilting. I met her a couple of years ago at the Long Beach quilt festival and did the same thing as you. I was so excited to meet my quilting idol!

I just bought that pattern this week and was going to tweek it alittle and make a bed quilt! I love how your little baby quilt turned out!

Yes indeedy, my first quilt was a Quilt in a Day Log Cabin. I even took a class to make it. It is very lightweight and is on our bed right now (although it really isn't big enough)as we needed some sort of summer cover but nothing heavy. I was just admiring one of my favorite prints in it yesterday morning.
Love your latest quilt!

Wonderful how things came together for you in a hurry. That's always a good thing 🙂
The very first bed sized quilt I made was a Double Pinwheel from Eleanor's pattern book. I liked her methods although there did seem to be less instruction on the actual quilting part:) No matter, it all worked out!

I loved your comments about
Eleanor's quilt books. Her log cabin was one of the first quilts I made. Her instructions were great for a new quilter!
