I’ve been anxious to try the Easy Dresden ruler Stephanie sent me…and so I gathered the ruler and a Moda charm pack of Collection for a Cause Legacy by Howard Marcus. Using a charm pack you can make the smallest size (one inch) up to the 5″ sized Dresden blocks. I decided to start out with a 3 ½″ Dresden which meant I could get two Dresdens cut out of each charm square; since there are 44 squares in this charm pack, I’ll be able to make four complete Dresden blocks. I actually did the math and realized that by using a 3″ Dresden I could get six complete Dresden blocks from this charm pack–and with two charm packs I could make an entire Dresden quilt using this size template. (If anyone is interested in all the numbers… comment or e-mail me, and I’ll give you the numbers of templates that can be cut from each charm square depending on the size template you use).
It’s going to be fun seeing the other blocks come together…they’ll all be different since only 20 different Dresdens are needed for one block. I used freezer paper applique’ to do the circle for the center…and one charm square is large enough to make each circle.
Making the Dresden block was a lot of fun! I loved the Dresden block made by Vanessa of V and Company and had to make one similar to hers (made out of the “Sweet” line by Moda); however, I used both “Sweet” and “Swell” (the same fabrics I’m using for my Tisket a Tasket blocks by Anne) in my block.
I love the way this block turned out…what do you think about the Moda Beach House polka dot fabric I’m thinking of using for a background?

wow I bought some of that brown dot…and I have tons of legacy charms, honey buns etc. So I would love to have your calculation..I have an easy dresden template.

I can’t believe how easy dresden plates are with that rule. I have always wanted to make a dresden plate block to frame and hang on the wall, so I should really get one of these rulers. I like that polka dot fabric for the background – it’s subtle but gives it movement. I especially love your block in the Sweet fabric line.
Good luck with that prom dress!
Quilt Hollow says
I’ve looked for that exact template and have never found it. I think those fabrics on that background are stunning!

Sherri…I love the background for your dresden plate! It is so beautiful. I think I will have to do a lot of other small projects and then move toward trying that. I admire your work–it is very precise. The Sweet and Swell is so, well, sweet! Those fabrics are just delicious to look at! Did you have fun at the women’s conference? Have a great week!
Tara says
I’m gonna have to try that! Love the polka dots for a background!
Mary on Lake Pulaski says
I take it you are also recommending the easy dresden ruler? Your first is perfect and yes, the Lakehouse dot looks great with it.

I’m going to have to look for Collection for a Cause….love the browns and pinks. Great block!

I would also love to have your calculations for the Dresden block. Love both of your blocks. And would you share the name of the Dresden template?

The Dresden Plates are wonderful. You’ll have to bring your Japanese books next time we get together so I can peruse with you.

Sherri, These are beautiful. I love how different the look turns out based on the fabric – how old-fashioned and antique the Collection for a Cause looks and how fun and cheerful it looks out of the Urban Chicks collections. Really great.

The Dresden block is one of the few techniques left that I want to do. Your post is very pursuasive!
Beautiful fabrics in all ‘plates’ posted, I love the polka dot background!

That background is perfect…I love it. That is going to be just beautiful.
Sheri Howard says
I STILL love that Swell, and Sweet line of fabric. You are making your daughter’s prom dress? GOOD FOR YOU! I am so happy to see people start to sew clothing again…(I think since the apron craze started) Don’t you just hate to take a 5/8 seam? It almost is such a waste of fabric! Make sure you post it, we all want to see!
Shasta says
They are both beautiful. I would love to know HOW you did your calculations. I should have paid better attention in geometry class!

That is just so pretty. And what a great idea for the charm squares. Math was never my best subject so I would love to have what you worked out. Thanks for sharing. I’ve tried dresdens before and wasn’t too thrilled with the results. But I think I could do this and want to try again.

You are tempting me big time! Those blocks turned out so pretty… I love them!

That’s exactly how I made my Dresden Plate quilt, Sherri. I made mine out of Moda’s Madiera and Shangri-la. I’ll probably post about it on my blog tomorrow, so come on over and have a look.
I love the fabrics that you used. It’s going to look smashing when it’s done!
Lovve that template/ruler.

Hi Sherri,
as I read your post this morning in my reader before hurrying to work I had to smile: I saw your beautiful DPs from Legacy and thought: that would be perfect for the ‘Sweet’ Layer Cake that’s paitiently awaiting the perfect project ;o) ~ and then I scrolled down and saw that you’ve already had the same idea *lol*. Oh, I have to get the ruler for it {dang, I really shouldn’t read your blog…it’s desastrous for my account ~ no, just kidding! I won’t miss any of your posts!}.
Hugs, Julia
P.S.: yep, I’ll soon share my DT3 quilt ;o)

Would you be able to post the measurements on your blog? That way, you only have to do it once – I’m sure there are lots of us out there who want them.
Love, love, love your block! I’m usually a reproduction kinda quilter but I have to make one in these fabrics. Absolutely love it!

I love your dresden plate blocks. I bought the easy dresden template recently but have yet to start using it, maybe I should, and fast !! I would love to have your calculation. Thanks.
I read that EZ quilting had a chart to show the finished block size for the various width used for each wedge, but was unable to find it on their web site, do you by any chance have this chart too ??
thanks for sharing. happy sewing.
