I’ve got a fabric giveaway today thanks to the folks at Robert Kaufman and Amanda Murphy, the designer of this great collection, Veranda! I have some of this terrific fabric to play with myself, and I also have two Ten-Squares and two Roll-ups to give away!
I’ll keep the comments open until Thursday night and pick 4 winners Friday morning. The first person will get to choose whether they want a Ten-Square or Roll-up, then the second, third and fourth winners can choose from what is left…sound good?! As for comments….how about your best organizing advice? I recently added a lot to my plate and have to get really organized very quickly!
Oh, and I also need to announce winners from Saturday’s Schnibbles Parade! Carrie is sending a copy of her new book, Another Bite of Schnibbles, as well as some of her latest fabric for Henry Glass, Nine Dots, to Dortha from my parade and Kim from Sinta’s parade. Bear Paw Quilts and More donated two Flora charm packs, and Simone was the lucky winner of those. Carol (no blog) won a $15 gift certificate from Quilter’s Paradise, and Leah won a gift certificate from Quilt Taffy! Thanks so much for all the great input we received on the Schnibbles parades.
And thanks so much for stopping by!

Here is my advice: unorganized chaos is a lot easier to manage and less time consuming to get started!
Honestly I spend too much time planning and organizing and less time doing… so I try to keep organizing at a minimum.
This is some super yummy fabric – thanks for the great giveaway opportunity!

When organizing I am finding that see through drawers or containers really help. I have all my kids fabrics together, the others are organized by color families. My scraps are in ziploc bags, again by color families. My quilt books are also organized by topic (baby quilts, blocks, quiliting, etc.). I also label my drawers and boxes so I know what is where at a glance.

Hi Sherri! Trying SO hard not to buy fabric so I was happy to see your giveaway – SAVE ME!! LOL!
My best organizing tip is use lots of totes – clear ones so you can see what is inside. AND, definitely label on the outside exactly what is inside. You think you are going to remember what you put in each of these babies – but weeks later – you have no idea!
Have a great day and I'll keep my fingers crossed. BTW, don't sign up for daily emails from StitchSteals. They send these very bad emails showing you their sale items each day. It's a very, very bad thing!! LOL! Today's deal is very, very tempting. It's My Mind's Eye "Lost & Found" Here's the link because I want to share the temptation!! Good luck!

OOOOOh, what pretty fabric! I like to keep all my notions and tools in vintage glass jars(of all sizes). My boys laugh as I put things away chanting, "like goes with like"… I also keep "types" of fabric together: flannels together, linen together, pre-cuts together (jelly rolls in a lovely basket….)

I had a friend organize my sewing closet for me. I love that she labeled everything in a clear container. So I can see what is in it. And I like to keep one box for the things I am working on right now.

Yummy fabric, thank you for the giveaway. My tip would be go buy an labeling machine. I received one as a present a few years ago and it has been great. Now I label all my containers. Sooo tired of asking Where is it.

Organizing advice? LOL My mother lives with me and we both sew – it's crazy. Best advice is to get rid of what you can! LOL Recently we DONATED about 30 yards of fabric that we had not used for YEARS (hardly made a dent in our stash) and then we created a list of WIPS and posted it on the wall figuring if we had to face that list (and the possibility of being able to cross things off of it) it would motivate us to FINISH things.
We'll see…

I have found that see-through bins and glass jars are the best for my organizing because, for me, "out of sight is – out of mind".

Oh, that fabric is just lovely! I am just getting ready to quilt my second quilt. So I am a beginner compared to most of your readers. I do have a tip for organizing your life and sewing. I keep a planner. You can create one on your computer, but I like the method of writing tasks down. I assign a task for my crafts also. I assign them an estimated completion date and then package all of the required materials in large Ziploc bags and print a tag with the date and information on it. Put the tag in the bag with the materials. Now back to the planner. I have found that when I'm naughty and procrastinate, I have to carry that task over each week and just the fact that I have to write it again and again in my planner makes me guilty and then I go and finish it. Unfortunately, that is often, but at least I procrastinate in an orderly manner! Thank you for the opportunity! Susan

Wow I'd love to win some of that yummy fabric. As far as organizing. If it is stuff around the house I try to purge and keep things pretty cleaned out. We have a family of four (soon to be five) in our two bedroom apartment so things can get out of hand quickly. When organizing comes to keeping multiple things going all at the same time (I.e. Grocery shopping, organizing, school activities, sewing, writing, etc.) my best tool is my little notebook where I keep my ongoing to do list. It helps me not forget something and also keeps me on track. I just try to glance at it each night and make a mental idea of what I'd like to accomplish the next day.

My skills at putting things away in their proper place is nil. Thanks for the chance to win, I'd like the jelly roll.

My best organization advice is to write out a list of everything that you need to do in order of importance or deadline. I choose a manageable amount from that list at the end of each day and write it on the dry erase board in my sewing room. When I walk in the next morning I don't have to waste time trying to figure out what I need to do. I also organize all of the fabrics and notions for my projects into their own clear bag or container so there's no searching for what I need to get started. Thanks for the great giveaway.
Sunnybec says
LOL that is so funny asking me about organisation…my hubby would laugh so much at that, I can never find things, I always put them in a safe place… it's that safe even I can't find them!! Thanks for the giveaway

When I am feeling overwhelmed by my "To Do" list, I pick one item and promise myself I will spend at least 15 minutes on that item. Sometimes the 15 minutes leads to a longer session and the item can be scratched off the list. Sometimes 15 minutes is all I can spare, but at least I've made a dent in completing that item. This isn't totally original, I was inspired by "The Fly Lady": http://flylady.net/
And thanks for sharing Veranday – the colors look wonderful!

OOOh, it's hard on the organising side of things. I suppose one place where I am somewhat organised is little bits department (that's my buttons, sewing machine feet and so on). I have a bunch at home that love Bon Maman jams so I use empty jam jars to keep those. Jars themselves are really pretty so it really works.

Thank you so much for this giveaway!
I organized my fabric, by folding it all the same way/size and putting it in boxes or containers.

Organizing advice? Don't worry about it. At least don't worry about it until you need it, and then don't freak out when you can't find it. Distract yourself with a different project and the missing items will probably show up. It seems to work for me most of the time, but then again my last blog post featured photos of straight jackets. Those fabrics look so pretty. Ok, when I get into an organizing mood, I take everything out of that space so I can start with a clean area. I then sort through everything and I have three piles, donate, keep and trash that way I can weed out stuff I haven't used in a long time and get rid of them. After I am done, I then find a place for my keep pile. It's worked very well for me. I go through this craze a couple of times a year. I get rid of alot of things even though I don't buy much, but for some reason things seem to accumulate.
aksherry says
Beautiful fabric. My best organizing idea. Use a calendar!! If it's not on the calendar in my house it doesn't happen. And I keep a note pad by my bed so if I think of something in the middle of the night, I can write it down so I don't think about it instead of sleeping.

My best organizing tip is to keep it organized…I am so much more productive if I am organized than if I am not. Seems my brain gets too cluttered if my life is cluttered…calendars help a lot and so does organized storage space..course I'm lucky, if I need it built, my husband does it for me! 🙂

For things do get done, I use lists. Sometimes they're in my head, sometimes on paper, but I use them no matter where I put them. For stuff, I like containers. With labels. I have one for paper punches, one for rubber stamps, one for children's clothing fabric and patterns
, etc. I just wish everything would fit in the same size container and that the containers didn't hang over the front edge of the shelves!
Erica says
I'm a terrible organizer! But the one thing that has worked for me, is to put 1 project in it's own see through box. That way everything for that project is in one place. I can grab whatever I feel like working on.
loriginsberg says
My best organizing tip? I would have to say combining using fun containers with function. I keep fabric in vintage suitcases, pyrex bowls, old Coke crates, baskets and so on. I've purchased most of them from yard sales and swap meets. So now my love of being organized is combined with my love of finding vintage treasures!

My best organizing advice is to destash craft supplies you are not using or haven't for the past 12 months! 🙂
Julia says
Best advice I ever read was to look at your space as a clock. Start at 12 o'clock and go around and before you know it you're finished. Second piece of advice is to spend 15 minutes a day on your project/chore. Most people get discouraged when they see a large project/chore in front of them but if you break it down to just 15 minutes a day, you'll finish sooner than you think. Thanks for the great giveaway!
Archie the wonder dog says
Make a list and put them in order of priority then set a timer for 15 minutes or so and concentrate fully on one of the high priority tasks then reward yourself with a cup of tea or some sewing (of the non-messy kind!!) and repeat a couple more times that day. A week of that (if you can) will soon have you sorted then it's a matter of tidying as you go to keep on top of it. Oh, and labelled boxes help and try to keep like items (like rulers or scissors and rotary cutters) close together. Good luck and thanks for the giveaway!

My best organizing tip is to clean up – if not as you go – then every time you finish up for the day. Things don't get ahead of you then.
Any free fabic is a great prize for me. Thx for the chance.
Coloradolady says
Thank you for the chance. Well, I don't know if it is the best, but I tend to get overwhelmed when starting an organizing project. So, I sit down with what needs to be done and sort to piles, like things, if it is fabrics, like colors. And work at the mess that way. It does work for me, to not look at a WHOLE lot of stuff that needs to be done, just focus on one thing at a time.
Sarah Craig says
I use lots of ziploc bags and pants hangers to help organize stuff – ziplocs hold projects in progress or groups of blocks; pants hangers are great for organizing flimsies! Thanks for the chance to win such pretty fabrics!!

Wow! These would be a treat in any sewing room! Thanks for the generous opportunity!
My Best Organizing Tip? Hmmm I'd have to say it was when I bought several pair of my favorite thread snips when they were on sale. I have them 'stashed' in all the places I sew so there's no need the dig through drawers & boxes looking for them.
Thanks, much!

Mama Bell says
The best thing I have learned and continue to learn to keep me organized is to do the hardest thing first! No procrastinating what you don't want to do and then reward yourself with something enjoyable!
Sarah says
My best organizing advice? Get everything out in plain site, sort it into piles – like with like, see how much room a category will take up, and put it in containers, drawers, bags, or whatever you use. Also, try to use uniform sized containers – if you need to stack them or have them visible, it looks so much better to have the containers all be the same size. For example, if you are dealing with sewing notions, get them all out on a table, rug, or some large space. Put all zippers together, all small tools together, ribbons together… etc. Get it all out and sorted, put into large ziploc bags, put the bags in a clear-drawered rolling cabinet. You can even label the drawers, but I don't find it necessary. Adaptations of this work with paperwork (use files), kitchen organization (drawers & cupboards), garages (boxes & shelving & good labeling).
An organizing tip that I read one time, that I try to live by, is : It should be easy to find an item, but even easier to put it away.
By the way, beautiful fabrics!!
Ida says
I sort my projects in either tuppers or in large (2-3 gallon) ziploc bags. In each, I put fabric and whatever instructions are needed.
When I need to do a quick clean, all of these 'organized' projects go in a larger tupper (56+ gallon) and stored. 🙂
I do similar w/ my scraps — sort them by color, and then into ziplocs. The ziplocs then go into one large basket.
I have a large tupper just for notebooks (for all of those things I've printed off the internet, but haven't found time [yet] to complete).
BUT … after my stash was hit by unexpected basement flooding, I find that my most important 'organization' is to SCAN all of my patterns, and save them in PDF format. I store those on an electronic media site (like google documents), and burn them off onto CD when I have enough to fill a CD — so that I don't lose all of my precious patterns AGAIN.
Mommarock says
I am most certainly a list maker. I write down everything I have to do, and want to do. It all qualifies as stuff to do. For everything on the list that is a HAVE to do that you mark off the list you are rewarded by doing a want to do from the list next. Cross them off the list, but keep them there so you can see the sense of accomplishment. A notebook works well. When the whole page has been crossed off I fold down the corner of the page otherwise the page must remain up to be referred to again and again to remind me that I need to look at the task again. It feels great to see all the tasks that are crossed off to remind you of all you have accomplished. You don't beat yourself up so much.
Rebecca says
My organizing advice is to make lists and prioritize what needs to be done, and what can be left undone. Also, I try not to accept too many new tasks at once, or I'll get overwhelmed. THANKS for the chance at one of those great prizes!

Well…if you get any good organizing advice, you'll have to share. The closest I get it making out my menu for two weeks at a time and making out my shopping list at the same time. I can't say that I organize really well, but one thing I do to keep on top of things is to not procrastinate – at all. If there is something to be done, I do it pronto before it gets forgotten about! And the calendar is key – always refer to the calendar 🙂

Lovely fabric. I'd just love to try something with one of those wonderful jellyrolls. Thanks so much for the chance to win.
One thing I finally under control is "left-overs". I'm not great at using scraps but I know friends and groups who are so I save for them. I use 6 shoe boxes. Whenever I finish a project I deal with the left-over fabric, right then and there. These are the boxes: selvedges, 5" and 2 1/2" squares, 2 1/2" and 1 1/2" strips (at least 10" long), black and white scraps, any size or shape larger than 2"x2". If it doesn't fit one of those categories…it's out, right then and there. When a box is mostly full, I pass it along. Makes me feel good because it's out of my stash but not discarded. Happy day all!
Cowgirl in the City says
My best organization tip would be to get a Franklin Covey planner and WRITE EVERYTHING down. That way your day can be scheduled, and thus your life.

I organize by color (fabric/buttons/thread/ribbon). It makes it a lot easier to see what I am working with.I use a bookcase meant to hold cds or dvds for fabric. I store patterns or magazines in magazine holders and loose papers in a binder. But most of all I make time for myself so I sew all the things I want to.

Beautiful fabric! I think the thing that keeps me organized is making lists. What needs to be done, food shopping, errands, appointments, etc. Other than that rubbermaid bins with lids save me from the mess. I have every closet & cupboard filled with them. They're not attractive, but no one sees them & better to have all the cold meds thrown in one than them falling over everytime I need something on that shelf.

I think some good organizing advice would be to simplify. The less stuff you have, the easier it is to clean and organize it. Now I just need the time to sort through my stuff!

Sewing room organization – I do try to keep my patterns together by kind – quilts, purses, aprons, skirts. I use magazine holder boxes for a good amount of those patterns. If I have a project in mind for precuts that I have, I like to place them in a plastic bag with a note telling me what that project is and maybe the pattern and coordinating fabric. Those are then in a box on my serger table so I can see what I have.

I just this second got the email telling me you had a new post up! And there are 124 (about) before me. I LOVE this fabric and love Robert Kaufman fabrics in general. They are my favorite brand.
Anyway organizing. I have just organized my sewing room and I have bought loads of see through boxes and one plastic see through tower and that's how I have organized all my quilting stuff and this way I can see in an instant what colors and fabrics are where. So much easier and it didn't take me that long to do either. Good luck with your organzing.

This probably counts as time-saving more than organizing, but here's my tip. When I cook, I cook in large quantities and freeze portions that are enough for a meal for however many people I need to feed. That way, I can cook once and eat two or more meals. Also, I am devoted to my crock pot — so easy! If you would like a great, easy recipe for Crock Pot Cranberry Chicken let me know.

Make a to do list, check off things as you go but don't stress out if you don't accomplish them just add them to your list for the next day eventually everything will get done.

Thanks for the opportunity to enter this wonderful giveaway.
As for advice on orgnization… I use large pizza boxes to keep all my projects in. They are easy to stack and label, and will hold most projects up to a point. After that they are usually almost finished anyway. Also, I clean up my room after the end of each day. That way the room is fresh to start in the morning.
Ladybug says
My best advice for organizing is don't wait. From whatever point you are at start now. The longer you put off getting organized the harder it will be.

yeah for veranda! this line looks so pretty. thanks for the chance to win.

Apart from the clear plastic storage boxes with labels, lists in my diary of things to do/achieve each day help keep me focused on all the 'stuff' that needs to be done. Thanks for the giveaway 🙂

Wonderful giveaway! I fold my fabric and store by colors. As far as projects go, I have stackable boxes with each project (pattern, fabric, thread, etc.)inside and also I like to repurpose so I keep the clear zippered plastic bags that blankets, sheets, and pillowcases come in and this is perfect for storing projects and lots of times they have a tab on top that I can hang them.
Lisa McGehee says
Wow – such lovely fabric. Would love to win. And what fantastic organizing advice. My favorite has been to use the removable hooks and hang my rulers on the wall by my cutting table. I've disciplined myself – it may be the only area where I have discipline – to hang up the rulers right away so I always know where they are located.

Hi! Thanks for the giveaways! I'd chose a Layer Cake (10 in squares) please!
Do you mean organizing your quilting/crafting, or organizing your life?
If it is your life, a journal/calendar book you keep with you ALWAYS!, divide into:
Must do today: Keep to 5 things. Do these first!
Get ready for tomorrow, Keep to 5 things, what you have to ready, ie: groceries to make cookies next day for school, etc
When I have time (for over the next 1-2 wks)Want to dos, bills, etc
Upcoming (ensure you have brought forward kids birthday parties, after school activiites, your appts and committments, hubby's committments, upcoming concerts, parties, etc you need to buy tickets, gifts, costumes, etc
After 2-4 wks, when you are used to this program, add in your crafting deadlines, etc.
If it is crafting, sewing you need to organize, do the same thing, but use crafting Must Dos to meet deadlines, etc. Add in bill paying, kids stuff in the lower priority. That way you can meet all your priorities!
Take 5 mins before bedtime, cross off the Must Dos. If not done, carry over to the next day! No More than 2 carryovers!
Plastic totes too are great, I get those ready the night before I go to sleep, so they are easy to grab on your way out the door.
Take care, Leslie

One thing that works well for me is putting things new things away right away. If you wait they will pile up. 🙂

My organizing hint…clear plastic shoeboxes! Love them! I would pick the ten-square. Thanks for the giveaway. The fabric is gorgeous.

I'd share the thing that grabbed me recently for organising my fabric, up to now it's been in plastic bins. I am winding it on to cardboard that I have covered with brown paper and stacking it in book shelves so I can see it and not have the endless mess that comes with auditioning as it tends to ends up in heaps. My fat quarters are also being wrapped on smaller pieces of card and pinned discreetly for the same reason. Mind you, I think its a good idea to make sure the bookshelves are protected with either a spray or more natural treatment to protect the fabric from moths ets. Also, I love using a ruler rack…when cutting. I approached my brother who works with wood to create a wooden rack with parallel long notches in the wood that enable me to have the stand in front of my cutting mat and the rulers go straight back into place..makes it a lot easier to locate the right ruler. I love using it. I also love the Veranda design and wouldn't organising it into my stash or cutting it up one bit. Thank-you.

My hint would be to make sure you clean up after each project! Would love to win this fabric.

I can't live without my 6 x 9 notebook…you know the kind with the metal spiral and dividers! This keeps me on track for house, work, hobbies and other. O Sherri what a lovely giveaway; I HAVE to enter!
My best tip for organising is to write down what you've done and what you've agreed or arranged with others.
Keep your hard disk (brain) free of this kind of clutter: WRITE IT DOWN.
This also helps you to keep a helicopter view.
Or 'organising' in the way of cleaning and clearing up?
I think I'm a tidy person, but my fabric storage and my desk keep getting cluttered. So I have to clear them up form time to time and then I have a perfect view again of what I'v got and thus don't need to buy.
Better so?
I wonder …

Would love to win that fabric – it is SCRUMPTIOUS!!!! My best organization advice is something I did just recently. I went through my sewing room and made a list of all my current projects (includes UFO's). Then I gave the 10 I liked most a priority number. Now, whenever I finish with one, I'll know immediately which one comes next. I also picked out three new ones I want to make so I can pop one in there in the middle so I don't burn out on old projects :~)
Roseflora says
thank you for the giveaway, they are all beautiful. Sometimes I organized my workspace by projects. Everything I need for a doll, a bag or one crochet scarf, I gathered them and put them in separate boxes.
Harrysmum says
Wow – another great giveaway, thanks for the cahnce to win!
My tip for organisation is find a routine and stick to it!
I can't abide washing around all week so only wash on Friday night and Saturday morning – I get it all out on the line (it sometimes takes 2 days to dry in our British Summer)and then iron and put away on Sunday Evening. If the kids miss the opportunity then it stays unwashed until the next week!!!

I like to keep my fabrics in clear plastic containers, folded up neatly and easy to see at a glance.

Mary T. Pratt Salmon says
Hi Sherri:
I was forced to get organized when I had to put most of my quilting supplies in the garage while a quilting studio is under construction. So, I bought tubs and small project boxes. I put fabric in the tubs according to type…children's, batiks, holidy, etc. Then in the small project boxes I put WIP (works in progress)with the most pressing one on top. So, while a lot of items have been out of sight, urgent projects were handy and in sight. I also had to put things away each night for I was working on the dining room table. This has taught me a lot in the 3 months of contstruction…1)there is a lot of stuff I am no longer interested in and, 2)I love finishing a project! So, a lot of things will be given away and my most pressing projects will get done.
Also, I made folders and kept them in sight on the bar. Quilt shows, retreats, workshops, etc. They each had a folder. When the occasion is finished, I threw out the paperwork and used the folder for another occasion. They are within eyesight constantly.
I hope this helps.
Thanks for the chance to win some gorgeous fabric!

organising !!! oh I am such a nub when it comes to that BUT I did manage to organise somewhat by seperating colors into their own repective tubs. And I keep small clear boxes for each WIP I have going. Allows me to see when I am getting over my head and it also allows me to keep desk space somewhat free 🙂
Good luck…..to both of us :)!!!!

Get some of those big zip-lock bags they have at the dollar store and bag each project you have, whether it is started or not. Pull out four of them and alternate working on the four. When one gets done, replace it with another. Also, get rid of stuff you don't need or enjoy.
Good luck!

Wow, a wonderful giveaway! Thanks for a chance to win. I enjoyed reading everyones ideas! It's sort of hard to put organizing under one label. It realy depends on what you need to organize. I would say if it's projects they should be listed according to priority and then hit them hard and fast. lol If it's your sewing room or studio I can't help at all. Mine seems totaly overwhelming. In order to organize my sewing room I would have to remove every single thing and start from scratch. I'm holding off on that though because or plan is to retire on the Oregon Coast within the next two years and I can organize everything then. If I can stand it that long! Hmmmm…..don't know!! lol

I put my projects in big ziploc bags so hopefully all the pieces stay together. Love Amanda Murphy fabrics. Thanks for the opportunity.
Carla says
I try to cut leftovers from my projects right away into 1.5", 2" and 2.5" strips which I then store neatly in clear lidded boxes. My rule is that I can only have one box of each size, so it keeps me using up the scraps.
Mary says
I am very lucky. When my daughter left for college, I took her room for a sewing room. I use bins for fabrics, bins to store WIPs and make lists, also. But the best thing I learned to do if I can't keep things organized on a daily basis is SHUT THE DOOR TO THE SEWING ROOM! Then nobody has to know.
cmaxwell57@nc.rr.com says

Oh Sherri…count me in on this drawing please!
I think the best organizing advice I could give is a storage container for each projects fabric, pattern, thread or whatever speciality ruler is needed. This way when you feel like working on that particular project it is right there all together…unlike me who just the other day went looking for the rest of the layer cake that I wanted to use for my Short Story border and couldn't find it for the life of me…sending me into a panic! At last it was unearthed and life of quilting carried on.

Kristy says
Best organizing tip. Invite your daughter over (this works best if she owns her own home), and act as though you are going to get rid of many many items….she will start to get fearful and say she wants it, so you reluctantly let her take it home with her. Now you simply have your stash at a different site, and you don't have to clean around it. Believe me when you need something she will surely give it back to you….as it will mean one more quilt in her inheritance. Hoping to win the fabric…I have the space….well you know why!

To help me manage my swaps and quilt alongs, as well as things I projects I want to do, I write the deadline date in the diary, a "check on it date" a week or so, or maybe 2 weeks before it is due. I try to plan time a little time on my free days in the diary for the project/s. This doesn't always work, but at least I know when it's time to panic!! I also keep every thing associated with each project in it's own zip-lock bag. Hope some of that helps…and at least you know you're not alone!
Thanks for the chance 🙂

I'm sure others have suggested the same thing, but I suggest making lists and prioritizing them by day. I would have trouble functioning without mine.
One thing that's really helped me to have more time for other things and also to eat healthier is to plan out my menus a month at a time. Then I always have the ingredients on hand and the meat thawed. It's incredible how much less we eat out now and we enjoy the meals so much more.
Whatever advice you choose to take, good luck with it! And remember, we're not superwomen!

10 square of Veranda – wonderful colors
Organizing todos – I still use the Franklin Planner method of writing down what I need to do (in smaller tasks) for a day, prioritizing it (urgent, long term must do, doesn't make a hill of beans if do or not, etc.), and then adding/subtracting todos from the list. I then carryover to the next day, and start the todo list over. Usually I find that it keeps me from time wasters.
I also block out appts/travel time for drs, baby sitting, etc. on a full month calendar. This helps me stage my "running around" days.
Beth Paulson says
Beautiful fabric!! I'd like a cake layers…Wish I was more organized, seems I have sewing room all cleaned up then do a project and it is chaos again,, I did organize projects into stackable boxes with the pattern. I think I want and buy too much! Beth
Cheri C. says
Organizing… use what works for you. I have tried several "container" and the thing that works for me the most is clear containers. This way I can see what's there and don't keep buying the same thing over and over AND I can find things much easier.
Lindsay says
What beautiful fabric, thanks for the giveaway! As far as organizing goes, I use plastic tubs for storing my fabric. I try to keep fabric lines together and I sort miscellaneous fabric by color. I keep a three ring binder of quilt sketches and will keep a WIP list in the front of it as well as a list of items I need. If you are having difficulties planning your time, what I've found works well for me (although I haven't been practicing this lately) is to make a contract with myself each week. I will write down three things I agree to accomplish during the week (they don't have to all be quilting related) and if I don't do them, then I will tear up a dollar bill at the end of the week. I want to win I just returned home from ankle surgery. Second time in four months and all I've been able to do is hand piece my FWSQ and read blogs. Maybe a little shopping :-)). Love to have anything you offer.

My best advice for organizing is to have a system for sorting your fabrics into the way that makes sense to you. I store my fabrics according to color with the exception of a few kinds of fabric that are certain themes( sunflowers, stars, children, batiks, 30's and Christmas) It works for me so that I can find them.
Thanks for the chance to win such nice fabrics – I think the roll up would be fun to win but any of the prizes would be great fun.
Regards, Anna

Oh pretty fabric….Use a planner and only one calendar to record everything.

My fabric stash was really out of control. You know, when everything gets pulled out when you're looking for a fabric in particular and just shove everything back promising you're going to straighten it out tomorrow? Yeah, right! Well, I found these cool fabric folding boards at a quilt show made out of a heavy duty template type material which I fold my fabric over and then stagger several coordinating fabric in layers over the board and voila, I've got myself a neat, tidy self-made kit or like fabrics put together in a lot less space. And they are so pretty to look at too.

I just bought some canvas boxes at Target and organized my fabric – Christmas, precuts, yardages – really helped me get a handle on things!

Organizing tip- Only have 5/6 plastic satchels with all ingredients in them for works in progress. They can contain patterns, fabric to cut out, binding, hand projects etc only have 5 or 6 plastic box/satchels. But you can only start a new project when a box is empty (project finished),then you only have 5/6 wips at one time.

My organizing advice is to buy enough containers to hide all of your mess in when company comes!

I love organizing things. I use purchased pizza boxes for particular projects. Quilt blocks fit nicely and I put the pattern, or magazine or book inside as well. I have a label printer and put it on the edge to let me know what's in that box. I also love those 2 1/2 gallon clear bags. I can see the entire project. Also I put all my magazines in those containers that hold magazines and keep them according to date. I also purchase those large kraft bags with handles to take projects. The little clear shoe boxes work great for scraps. I save them by color for paper piecing and string quilts. I hand all finished quilt tops on hangers with the backing and the prepared binding, so once they are quilted – I'm ready to bind. Just a few of my favorites. I would love to win one of your goodies…..gotta love any one of those.

Love this fabric 🙂 It's interesting to read how others best organize! Because I'm at work in front of a computer all day (dreaming of what I could be creating at home!), I use google (emails/docs/spreadsheets) to keep my lists organized of WIPs and other things I hope to make/by when/for whom/supplies I still need etc. Then, even though I can't be home sewing, at least I'm dreaming about it 🙂 And I can use my time well once I'm there!

I just cannot work in clutter, so I do one thing at a time, and always put tools away when I'm done with them. I buy the Ikea cardboard boxes with lids, my color scheme is red and white. I have a box for each color of fat quarters. I label the box with the color and slide them onto shelves. For my yardage, I have a shelf for l/2 yard pieces, a shelf for one yard pieces and a shelf for 2 yard pieces. Sometimes I have so much of one line that it gets its own box 🙂 That is the extent of my fabric stash!

My best organizing/cheating advice is: boxes! I try to use the same type/colour boxes (think IKEA) and stick everything inside and label them (one for scraps, current projects, UFOs, etc…). Perhaps inside it's still a mess because I haven't had time to sort it out, but it still looks organised in the shelves.
Terrific giveaway! I would love a jelly roll…

I love this fabric! Thanks for the giveaway.
As for organizing-I spend 15 minutes every night (no matter how tired I am) cleaning up my kitchen-I make lunches, wipe out the sink and deal with the junk my family drops on the kitchen counter (file it, trash it, sign it). I can face the day when I wake up to a clean kitchen.
Barb says
Organize schmorganize-just throw it in the closet LOL
Seriously, in the sewing room I like to use those plastic containers with lids for small pieces: shoebox size for charm squares and the next larger size for FQ's. I use file boxes and loose leaf binders for patterns, drawers for notions and shelves for fabric sorted by color. A lot depends on how much space you have (and how much money :D).

Wonderful give away and thank you for the chance to win it. I enjoy following your blog and being inspired. What works for me in organizing is that I keep all my fabric folded the same way and grouped in matching colors on bookshelves. I'm a person who needs to see what I have in order to use it. I made fabric panels to cover the front of each open bookshelf and it can be easily raised or lowered for access.

Love both of the fabrics. What a fun giveaway, thanks for hosting this. My tip – storing yardage, I take a 20X30 foam core board from Dollar Tree, cut it into six 10X10 sections and fold my fabric length wise and wrap it around the foam core board. These will fit on any size book shelf and keeps the yardage looking neat. I love to look at it this way.

I'm probably the worst to give advice on organization. I have 2 rooms and I they usually stay straight for awhile then the bottom falls out. I do keep my thread seperated for convience. I write all my projects down on big piece of card stock and pin it to the wall above my sewing space (I like the spiral notebook idea from Susan R). Next to each project I write down what stage the project is in: design, cut out, pieced, sandwiched, quilted, bound etc… Then I can see at a glance where I am with each project. Sometimes I take pictures and hang them above my sewing space so I know what I plan to work on next.
I hope I win some of that yummy fabric 🙂

Thanks for the chance to win! My tip is to leave something ready to sew — when you have a few moments waiting for the coffee to brew you can run to the machine and stitch a few pieces… not organizing but definitely a way to keep sewing.

I think of organizing kind of like weight loss…I keep trying, I make some progress, but it just doesn't always go well. LOL! I use a lot of lists. And, I mean old-fashioned, pen-and-paper lists. I like the feeling of crossing stuff off as I get it finished.
Jen says
Yay, fabric! I stay organized by using my iPhone everywhere. It's an embarassing addiction, actually 🙂 Also, I make a lot of To-Do Lists on the computer, print them out, and then play with my highlighters to put them in order of priority. Also, adding color to anything is always a "to-do!"

My best advice for organizing multiple projects is to keep all of the parts together. Then make a list with due dates on it and hang it on the wall where you can readily see it. Good luck with getting all of your ducks in a row. 🙂 Thank you for the great give-away also. Take care and God bless, Cory

I'm certainly not the one to give organizing advice. I told you! thanks for a chance to win that gorgeous fabric!

I like to think that I am very organized. I have my fabrics arranged by color. I use plastic totes for everything. I bought a label maker to help me stay organized. As for my books, they are not really organized in any way except for the books that I have bought fabric/kits for – they are separated out from the others. I also keep a spreadsheet with all the projects I have kits/fabric for, projects that are in process, and projects that are finished.

When I have to get organised, I make a list on the computer of everything I have to do, then reorder it in order of priority – could be by date needed, or by what you want to do first, whatever fits the bill. My best organizing advice is to get lots of clear containers. I buy all mine from The Container store. LOVE them and the lids snap on and the prices are good plus they are all stackable with a slight indentation in the lid to keep the one of top from sliding off. http://www.containerstore.com/shop/storage/storageBoxes/plastic?productId=10018851&N=71227
I buy the sweater and shoe boxes the most.
And when you are done with anything – put it away then.
When cleaning up an area don't run all over the house with things; put then into a container for each room or even bags and as you go to each room put those things you found elsewhere away, don't drop them in the correct room or you'll have to go back and clean them up again.
basically touch things ONCE and that goes with the mail too – when you get the mail, look at it, file it, shred it or toss it.

Organization! What's that? Just kidding. Recently, I went to Target to see if they had anything that I could store my current project in since I have about 5 of them going, I think. I ended up buying 5 lidded boxes then came home and put a separate project in each. One thing that it's allowed me to do is to pick from my stash and sort it for each project. It's scary how much we collect. I wouldn't mind winning though! I can always use more stuff.
Mom C says
I used to feel discouraged when anyone talked about organization. I had friends who always knew where every piece of paper was, they had color coded files and lists of where they put things. I couldn't get organised enough to begin to try! Then I read an article about organization which changed my life. It said that piles are OK! If you have an idea of what is in the pile, then that's enough! So I have piles and when they get more than I can stand, I go through and toss or file, but if I haven't used it, I mainly toss. I do have a few places, like I have a bill file and all my bills and mail that needs an answer goes in that drawer and I pay bills and deal with that file twice a month. Every child has a basket for their clothes, dirty clothes come up the laundry once a week and the clean clothes go back to the bedroom that night. We wash towels once a week, and each child has their own towel with their name on it. For a while every child had their own dish. Toys go in bins in the family room or bedroom, everything has a general area put maybe not a specific place. I don't like a lot of clutter, but I can live in it as long as I know that it is just clutter and not dirty. Good luck!

I know that it's been said before, but my best tip for organization is list-making. I have lots of lists in lots of places, depending on the item, and I rely on technology so that I don't forget things. Setting up reminders in Outlook or iCal is a great way to make sure that you don't miss something. Without that I would forget LOTS of things.
Thanks for the giveaway!

Well aside from the spiral notebook suggestion and the clear box suggestion I'm going with a different direction. This will help you spend more time quilting. Think about dinner at breakfast! Plan your dinner menus for the week on Saturday or Sunday and shop then. Each morning you'll know what you're making that night and can defrost or prep accordingly.
Bunny says
To keep organized, I try to take a minimalistic approach. Less is often better than more. Having more stuff means more work maintaining that stuff. I'd rather be able to spend the time I'd have to take cleaning, organizing, and sorting stuff I never use, on things I enjoy (like quilting!)

My best organizing advice is to have a home for everything.
For example, my cellphone lives in a specific pocket in my purse as do my house and car keys. When I'm at home, my purse is always placed in the same spot so I never have to wonder where I put it.
My sewing supplies also have homes. My sewing scissors live in the top drawer of my sewing machine cabinet unless I'm using them. I have a specific place for almost everything so I rare have to search for something when it's needed.
Thanks for the great giveaway and the chance to win.

Thanks for the chance to win some lovely fabric. My organizing advise is to make lists, prioritize at the start of the day and make a new list at the end of the day.

I wish i had some organizing advice! I am going to have to read the comments for some tips for myself!! Beautiful fabric, thanks for the chance to win. Also, love seeing the schnibble parade every month, such inspiration!

Love, love, LOVE Amanda Murphy's fabric lines! I'm thinking you need to be organizing your threads by the colors of the rainbow. I know I love mine that way. Thanks! Kd

My best organizing tools are two small cabinets- one is a spool cabinet, and one is a wooden tool box. It is wonderful to have thread, needles, cutters, rulers, stencils, bobbins, etc each in their own small drawer.

Organizing is like a lot of other things–pick a system, any system, and just do it. A few minutes a day keeps things pretty under control, no matter what you choose. Also, don't have more stuff than you personally can keep organized. If it is always out of control it is too much for you and you need to pare down until it is managable.
Thanks for the giveaway chance.

I love the fabric! I'm not really good at organizing but I have been trying very hard this year to get better. I bought the Iris storage containers used for scrapbooking and I put my fabric with the pattern, or magazine, in the container. This way, everything for the quilt that I'm going to make is all together. I found this to be very helpful.

Lovely fabrics!! Thanks for the chance to win some!
For fabric I like to organize by color…and then I pull stuff out into different stacks for future projects. For other things like ribbon and buttons and elastic I'd love to get cute containers or boxes to keep these in, labeled of course and a nice big bookshelf to keep it all in!!

Organization….hmmmm….something I haven't had since my last child was born 14 years ago! The most organized I am is that my material is all in one area in plastic tubs, and all my yarn is together in another area in plastic tubs! LOL Someday, I would like to get more organized, but I find being a grandma of 5, and still a mother to a teenager way too demanding to find time to fully organize my goodies! lol

Wow! Thanks for doing such a great giveaway, and for allowing us to share ideas. I organize my fabric into sterilite storage drawers, first by style of fabric then by color. They stack up neatly and have been pretty sturdy. I also use clipboards. I have 8 that hang from nails on the wall. Each has a pattern I want to do, fabric samples, progress notes etc. This keeps projects I really want to do out where I can see them – out of sight, out of mind for me!

Every Sunday night I write out a "Monday,Tuesday, Wednesday…." schedule on the back of a used piece of computer paper. I use my calendar and plan my week. I love to cross off things as they are completed and I don't have to think about what's coming up because it is written down for me. My husband laughs at me because he is a true techie, and can't stand that I don't use a phone calendar! Thanks for the giveaway! Love your blog!

What a great giveaway! For organization I'd say my best tips would be store fat quarters folded in plastic containers (like everyone else). I also use a plastic storage box for matchbox cars to store my threads. And plastic file boxes for my patterns. Page size patterns go into plastic sheet protectors in a three ring notebook. Great for block of the month patterns. Put a copy of the whole quilt into the cover slider.

Beautiful fabrics. Thanks for giving us a chance to win them. I would go for the Jelly Roll, were I one of the winners. I am not the most organized person BUT I do sort my fabrics by type – florals, stripes, plaids, 30s, etc. My 2.5 inch strips are kept in shoe boxes and my scraps are sorted by size only but soimeday I hope to sort them by color too.

Thank you for the chance to win! My organizing skills are sorely lacking, so I have to put everything in ziplock bags of all sizes and clear plastic tubs. That way, when I am searching for something I can at least see through everything!

What beautiful fabric. yummy!!
I'm not really organized, but I'm trying to get better. I have different containers for my different projects. I try and remember to put things back where I got them. So next time I can find them. Doesn't always work though. hehe
Thanks for a chanceto win.

I like to keep everything from a project in one place until it's quilted and bound. I usually put the pattern, fabrics, and any scraps in a plastic bag until the quilt is totally done. That way if it takes me awhile to start quilting or binding, I have everything I might need in one place!

I tell myself "don't put it down, put it away". Once I am organized this is the best way I can stay that way. I like using clear plastic tubs for works-in-progress so I can see at a glance how many I have at any given time.

My best organizing advice … clear containers, or if that is not possible labeling things … then hopefully the whole family puts things where they belong – no excuses! Thank you for the chance to win such awesome fabric!

I organize my things in plastic see through bins. I have the shelving from Ikea and can keep it all neat and tidy in there.
I really like the roll-ups and would choose this if I win the drawing.
Jeanette says
Gorgeous fabric! It just looks so yummy!
Organization tip: I try to clean up my studio after each project. But if things have gotten out of hand I have to stop and put away everything. When everything has an assigned place it is easier to clean up.

I have never won a contest in my life. But I'm trying to. I've entered a lot of them on quilting blogspots but have had no luck yet. Maybe this will be my lucky day. You inspire me. I have 5 block of the month clubs blocks and that is my favorite thing to do. They come thru out the month and I usually do them the day after they come. I have to read all the directions (yummy) and feel and iron all the fabric (yummy too) and then I make my block. I'm 1 away from finishing a Civil War quilt (my favorite fabric today) and am in the middle of the rest of them. It's like getting a present in the mail all month long. Love your site!!

Like many of my fellow quilters I also find clear plastic shoe boxes as an ideal storage home for my fabrics. They are color coded and sit on a book case in my sewing room.
Thank you for the opportunity to win such beautiful fabrics.
