Hello! The other day I mentioned I was thinking of making a heart themed quilt. So I took a little time to play around with a few different designs to see if any of them really caught my interest…
The first three blocks (pictured above) all finish at 6″ x 6″. I really love the
patchwork version; however, it would definitely take quite a bit longer to make an entire quilt using that style block even if I increased the size to 12″ finished. The bottom block is from Alisson’s terrific heart block tutorial which includes information for making several different size heart blocks.
I’m kind of leaning toward the style of blocks pictured below, though. I like how the tops and sides will appear more rounded in the finished quilt (the pattern for these is found in my row quilt pattern My Favorite Things). They are just a bit wider than they are tall.
And then there is the question of whether I want to make the quilt in reds and pinks…or make it in soft florals so it can be used year round. Decisions, decisions…
Do you have a favorite heart-themed quilt or pattern?
Thanks so much for stopping by!

I have your pattern, My Favorite Things, on my to-do list. I used to keep a binder of 'must make soon' quilt patterns, but it overflowed – so I reorganized everything under designer tabs. I just might have to buy a bigger binder and reprint those 'I must make soon' patterns – so they are all together in one spot. Love your hearts! Having a floral heart quilt year round sounds wonderful!

All the hearts are so sweet. I really am drawn to the colors and prints in the top 3 blocks and also see them together in one big block, used over and over in a bigger quilt. It would also be a great way to use up some scraps, and also have a quilt to use all year. Decisions, decisions….. I'm sure that whatever you decide will be lovely!

Great heart blocks!
I think I mentioned before that I tested a pattern for @ellisandhiggs and her heart blocks are my currently most favorited heart blocks. Easily put together and charm pac friendly and I'm sure it easy to enlarger them and make them Layer Cake friendly too. Now I need to try this:-)

I think your block would be the best to use. I like the way the seams are – and that it a fatter heart. Much cuter than the one with the seam down the middle. A seam down the middle is a no-no in garment making, so it goes again the grain to me. If I were making the quilt I would do florals.

Red is good all year round.

I'm with you, I like the "fuller" heart too. I think it would be beautiful in soft florals! Can't wait till see what you decide.

I used a layer cake and made a quilt for my sons wedding in 2015. THe layer cake was by Fig Tree-beautiful fabric. I had to cut the 10in block in half and add squares at the top and bottom to make the heart shape, then sew the 2 halves back together. I sewed them in a row. THe quilt was used to cover the table as you entered the venue to leave gifts, sign the guest book, etc.. The left over half square triangle scraps from this quilt I made my first grandbaby's quilt, who was born 2 months early (Oct 2016), for my son and his wife. The half square triangles were sewn in rows in the same direction. 2 quilts from one layer cake! 🙂 YEAH!
