Best Books for Scrap Quilts

Happy Friday! As part of my regular “Friday Favorites” series I thought today I’d share some of my favorite quilting books. And then…I couldn’t narrow it down to a manageable list. So…I decided to  focus on books that help one to use up scraps/stash since it seems so many of us are focusing on doing that this year!

Some of the books I’ve chosen are relatively new, while others are “oldies but 

 goodies!” And while most of the books contain primarily quilt projects, there are a couple with smaller project ideas, too!

Let’s get started!  First up is The Farmer’s Wife Sampler Quilt: Letters from 1920s Farm Wives and the 111 Blocks They Inspired.  I’m listing this book first because one of my favorite scrap quilts was made using this book (see it here). There are a wide variety of skill level blocks included in this book, too; a beginner quilter will find a lot of material to use, and the intermediate or more advanced quilter can also be challenged.

Next is Zakka Style: 24 Projects Stitched with Ease to Give, Use & Enjoy (Design Collective). This is a super fun scrap project compilation by a variety of different designers.  Projects range from bags, totes, bins, organizers, pincushions, quilts, pot holders and more! It’s really a terrific value with so many projects inside. I’m getting ready to review one of my favorites on the blog in a couple of weeks!

Another one of my favorite scrap quilt/project books is Sunday Morning Quilts: 16 Modern Scrap Projects &x2022; Sort, Store, and Use Every Last Bit of Your Treasured Fabrics.  This book is pure inspiration. Because it’s co-authored by two amazing quilters you get double the perspective. There is an introductory section that will give you lots of ideas for taming and storing your scraps. And the quilts are wonderful! There is even a project included to make storage boxes for your scraps…out of scraps!  The quilts range from simple to more complex and have a modern feel to them; however, even if you never make a single quilt from this book, there is a wealth of wonderful information included!

I can’t say enough about Scraps, Inc. Vol. 1: 15 Block-Based Designs for the Modern Quilter and Scraps, Inc. Vol. 2: 15 Block-Based Designs for the Modern Quilter. Of course I might be just a tiny bit biased in favor of these two because I have quilts in both of them. But these books are just fantastic and have a wide variety of designers included. The photography is beautiful, and of course there are a wide variety of designs included in each book.  

Another book I happen to have a quilt in is the Moda All-Stars – Scraps Made Simple: 15 Sensationally Scrappy Quilts from Precuts. This fun book contains 15 wonderful quilt designs…you’ll want to make them all! I love the scraps of wisdom from each designer, too–there is some fun reading inside! The quilt “My Favorite Color” by Lissa Alexander is on my list of must-makes for 2017.

And…nothing says scrappy like nine patches–it’s probably my go-to block for scraps. You’ll be surprised at the many different nine-patch configurations you can play with in Block-Buster Quilts – I Love Nine Patches: 16 Quilts from an All-Time Favorite Block.

I also have the Moda All-Stars – Mini Marvels: 15 Little Quilts with Big Style included in my top photo…I posted about this one very recently  (see that post here), and I’ve included it in this list because mini quilts are perfect for scraps!
